CHAPTER 2: THE WEIGHT OF OWNERSHIP

CHAPTER 2: THE WEIGHT OF OWNERSHIP

The first page was a property deed.

Then another.

Then a corporate registry listing “Harris Hospitality Group” as the sole owner of the venue.

Margaret turned a page too fast, as if speed could erase meaning.

“This… this can be forged,” she said, but no one echoed her anymore.

A staff manager near the back slowly stepped forward.

“Ma’am…” he said carefully to Linda. “Should we pause the reception?”

Linda shook her head once. “No. Let them finish their meal. This is still their wedding.”

That sentence landed harder than the slap had.

Emily stepped forward slightly. “Mom… you never told me you owned all this.”

Linda’s expression softened for the first time.

“I didn’t want you to grow up with a shadow you didn’t earn,” she said. “And I didn’t want anyone to treat you differently because of me.”

Margaret let out a shaky breath.

“So what… you came here to humiliate me back?”

Linda finally looked directly at her.

“No,” she said. “I came here to see if I would need to protect my daughter from her new family.”

The silence deepened.

Daniel turned fully toward Margaret now.

“Apologize,” he said again, firmer this time. “Not because of the hotel. Because you were cruel.”

Margaret opened her mouth.

No words came out.

For the first time in her life, she had nothing to dominate with.
