CHAPTER II – THE DOOR HE NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE AGAIN

The little girl led him through narrow streets lined with old apartment buildings.

His expensive shoes splashed through puddles.

For the first time in years, he didn't care.

When they stopped in front of a small apartment, the girl pushed open the door.

“Mommy! I'm back!”

A woman's voice answered from inside.

“Did you stay out in the rain again?”

Then she appeared.

And the man stopped breathing.

Emily.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably Emily.

The grocery bag slipped from her hands and crashed onto the floor.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Neither spoke.

The little girl looked back and forth between them.

Confused.

“Mommy?”

Emily's eyes filled instantly.

“No...” she whispered.

The man stepped forward.

“Emily.”

His voice broke on her name.

May you like

She looked at him as though she were seeing a ghost.

“You weren't supposed to find us.”
