CHAPTER 3 — THE DONATION BOX

CHAPTER 3 — THE DONATION BOX
As paramedics examined Natalie, a police officer asked what had started the argument.
Ryan carried a decorated wooden box to the dining table.
Across the front, written in gold letters, were the words:
Baby Hope Fund.
The officer opened it.
Inside were greeting cards, handwritten notes, and envelopes containing donations from family and friends.
Ryan explained quietly.
"The money wasn't for us."
"It was for the children's hospital."
Natalie had asked guests to donate instead of buying expensive gifts.
Every dollar was intended to help families whose newborns required intensive medical care.
Vivian had demanded the money moments before the cake was cut.
When Natalie refused, saying the donations belonged to the charity, Vivian became furious.
"I thought she was lying," Vivian insisted.
The officer glanced toward the camera.
"Let's see what the recording says."
Minutes later, the footage played on a television in the living room.
There was no confusion.
No misunderstanding.
The video showed Vivian grabbing the cake...
...shoving it toward Natalie's face...

...and pushing hard enough to send her backward into the crystal stand.
The room fell silent.
