Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Serena

Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Serena
The address on Mia's drawing led Lorenzo to a house that did not exist.
Not officially.
There was no number on the mailbox.
No name on the door.
No property record under the address printed on the back of the paper.
Yet Lorenzo knew he had found the right place.
Because the house was watching him.
A camera moved beneath the roofline.
A light switched on behind a second-floor curtain.
Then disappeared.
Lorenzo stood across the street in the rain.
Marco parked half a block away.
"You want me to go in first?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because whoever lives there already knows we're coming."
Lorenzo looked at the dark house.
"And I want her to know I'm not afraid."
Marco frowned.
"Her?"
Lorenzo held up Mia's drawing.
The three figures.
The woman.
The man.
The child.
And beneath them, one sentence:
THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT THEM ALL.
Lorenzo folded the paper.
"Let's meet the woman behind Serena."
The front door opened before Lorenzo touched it.
No guard.
No alarm.
No resistance.
Just an invitation.
He stepped inside.
The house smelled of old books, lavender, and cigarette smoke.
The hallway was narrow.
Paintings covered the walls.
Family portraits.
Political leaders.
Judges.
Businessmen.
Priests.
People Lorenzo recognized.
People he had once considered allies.
Then he saw the photograph at the end of the hallway.
A woman standing beside Antonio Duca.
Lorenzo stopped.
He knew her.
Everyone in New York knew her.
Isabella Romano.
Serena's grandmother.
Salvatore's mother.
The woman who had supposedly died twenty years earlier.
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
"She's alive."
A voice answered from upstairs.
"Very much so."
Lorenzo looked up.
An elderly woman descended the staircase.
She wore a black dress.
No jewelry.
No makeup.
Her gray hair was pulled into a tight knot.
She moved slowly, but there was nothing fragile about her.
Her eyes were sharp.
Cold.
Completely awake.
Isabella reached the bottom step.
Then smiled.
"Hello, Lorenzo."
He stared at her.
"You know me."
"I knew you before you knew yourself."
Lorenzo's hand tightened.
"You poisoned me."
"No."
She paused.
"I made sure you could be poisoned."
The distinction made his blood run cold.
"Where is Mia?"
Isabella smiled.
"Safe."
"Bring her to me."
"Not yet."
Lorenzo stepped forward.
"You have ten seconds."
Isabella laughed softly.
"Your father used to say the same thing."
"Which father?"
Her smile disappeared.
"Exactly."
Silence.
Then Isabella walked toward the sitting room.
"Come."
Lorenzo followed.
The room contained no family photographs.
Only documents.
Boxes.
Old tapes.
Medical files.
Thousands of pages arranged with frightening precision.
Isabella sat down.
"You have spent your entire life believing you inherited an empire."
Lorenzo remained standing.
"I did."
"No."
She pointed toward a folder.
"You inherited a laboratory."
Lorenzo opened it.
Inside were records from twenty-five years ago.
Genetic testing.
Blood compatibility.
Neurological studies.
His name appeared repeatedly.
SUBJECT L-01.
Lorenzo stared.
"What is this?"
"Your childhood."
"My childhood?"
"Your father didn't raise you."
She paused.
"Your father designed you."
Lorenzo looked up.
"Designed?"
"Not biologically."
She leaned back.
"Strategically."
She explained.
Antonio Duca had discovered a secret organization known as the Black Table.
It wasn't a traditional mafia family.
It was older.
More powerful.
It controlled money laundering networks, political influence, private intelligence companies, and criminal alliances across several states.
The Duca family had once been part of it.
Then Antonio tried to leave.
He believed the organization had become too powerful.
Too corrupt.
Too dangerous.
The Black Table disagreed.
They wanted his son.
They wanted Lorenzo.
"Why?"
Isabella's eyes hardened.
"Because your father had something they needed."
"What?"
"A bloodline."
Lorenzo frowned.
"What bloodline?"
"Yours."
She opened another file.
Inside was a genetic report.
Lorenzo's father wasn't Antonio.
It was Gabriel Romano.
Serena's uncle.
A man believed to have died before Lorenzo was born.
Lorenzo stared at the page.
"Gabriel?"
Isabella nodded.
"He was brilliant."
"Where is he?"
"Dead."
"Who killed him?"
"Antonio."
Lorenzo froze.
"Why?"
"Because Gabriel wanted you."
Lorenzo's breathing changed.
"He wanted his son."
"Yes."
"And Antonio took me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Antonio believed Gabriel would use you to destroy both families."
Lorenzo closed the file.
"So my entire life was built on a lie."
Isabella corrected him.
"No."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Your entire life was built on several lies."
Lorenzo demanded answers.
Isabella gave him pieces.
Never the whole truth.
That was her way.
She explained Serena's role.
Serena had been raised to believe that Lorenzo was the enemy.
She was told he had inherited everything that should have belonged to the Romano family.
She was taught to seduce him.
Monitor him.
Gain access to his accounts.
Eventually take control of the Duca empire.
But Serena had never been the mastermind.
She had been a weapon.
A beautiful one.
A disposable one.
"She betrayed you," Isabella said.
"She betrayed herself."
Lorenzo looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"Serena fell in love with you."
He laughed.
"No."
"Yes."
"She tried to kill me."
"She was afraid."
"She poisoned me."
"Because she was ordered to."
"She shot at me."
"Not tonight."
Lorenzo went silent.
Isabella continued.
"Serena did not shoot you."
"Victor did."
"Yes."
"Then why was Serena there?"
"To warn you."
Lorenzo stared at her.
"She knew Victor was coming."
"She did."
"And you knew."
Isabella smiled.
"I know everything."
Lorenzo stepped closer.
"Where is Mia?"
"You're impatient."
"She's a child."
"And she saw something she shouldn't have."
"What?"
"Serena meeting Victor."
Lorenzo froze.
"She witnessed the meeting."
"Yes."
"And that's why you took her?"
"I protected her."
"You kidnapped her."
"I saved her life."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"Where?"
Isabella pointed toward the floor.
"Below us."
The basement was enormous.
It extended beneath the entire property.
Rooms connected by concrete corridors.
Medical equipment.
Security stations.
Sleeping quarters.
A private kitchen.
And at the end of the corridor...
a small bedroom.
Lorenzo opened the door.
Mia sat on the bed.
Alive.
Safe.
She looked up.
For the first time since he had met her, she smiled.
Lorenzo dropped to his knees.
"Mia."
She ran into his arms.
He held her tightly.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
"You scared me."
Mia touched his face.
She pointed toward his chest.
Then toward herself.
Then formed a heart with her fingers.
Lorenzo understood.
She trusted him.
That meant more than anything else in the room.
Behind them, Isabella watched.
"You see?"
Lorenzo turned.
"What?"
"She chose you."
"Why?"
"Because she recognizes danger."
Isabella looked at Mia.
"Children often do."
Lorenzo carried Mia upstairs.
But before he left, Isabella stopped him.
"You haven't asked the most important question."
"What?"
"Why did I keep you alive?"
Lorenzo turned.
"Why?"
Isabella's expression changed.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.
"Because the Black Table isn't controlled by the Romano family."
Lorenzo waited.
"Then who controls it?"
Isabella looked toward the window.
"The woman who controls the Black Table has never appeared in public."
"Name."
Isabella shook her head.
"She has no name."
"Everyone has a name."
"Not her."
She paused.
"We call her the Architect."
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
"What does she want?"
Isabella looked at him.
"You."
"Why?"
"Because Antonio discovered something before he died."
"What?"
"The Architect wasn't building an empire."
She took a slow breath.
"She was building a replacement."
Lorenzo felt a chill.
"For whom?"
Isabella's voice dropped.
"For the United States."
Silence.
"The Black Table has spent decades infiltrating banks, corporations, law enforcement agencies, political offices, and private intelligence networks."
She looked at Lorenzo.
"And your family was supposed to become its public face."
Lorenzo stared.
"Me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you were raised to be perfect."
She smiled sadly.
"Disciplined. Intelligent. Ruthless. Loyal."
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
"And if I refused?"
"Then they would replace you."
"With whom?"
Isabella didn't answer.
Lorenzo already knew.
"Serena."
"No."
She looked at him.
"With your son."
Lorenzo froze.
"What?"
Isabella's voice was almost a whisper.
"The child you haven't met yet."
Lorenzo stared at her.
"What child?"
Isabella's eyes shifted toward Mia.
Then back to him.
"Serena is pregnant."
The room seemed to stop.
Lorenzo couldn't breathe.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
He thought of Serena.
Her disappearance.
Her fear.
The way she had looked at him in the warehouse.
The way she had lowered the gun.
The way she had whispered that she loved him.
Isabella continued.
"The Architect doesn't want you dead."
"Then what does she want?"
"She wants you to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because a dead Lorenzo becomes a martyr."
She paused.
"A missing Lorenzo becomes a rumor."
"And a rumor can be controlled."
Lorenzo looked toward Mia.
Then back at Isabella.
"What happens if I refuse?"
Isabella's face became expressionless.
"Then she will kill Serena."
Lorenzo froze.
"And the child."
His phone vibrated.
One message.
From an unknown number.
YOU FOUND MIA. GOOD.
Another message arrived.
NOW FIND SERENA.
Then a photograph.
Serena.
Bound to a chair.
Blood on her lip.
One hand resting protectively over her stomach.
Lorenzo's blood turned cold.
A final message appeared.
YOU HAVE SIX HOURS.
Then:
OR BOTH OF THEM DIE.
Lorenzo stared at the screen.
Isabella stood behind him.
"Now you understand."
Lorenzo slowly raised his eyes.
"Where is she?"
Isabella shook her head.
"I don't know."
"You know everything."
"Not this."
"Then who does?"
Isabella's expression darkened.
"The Architect."
Lorenzo looked toward the door.
Marco entered.
"Boss?"
Lorenzo handed him the phone.
"Find Serena."
Marco saw the photograph.
His face hardened.
"Who did this?"
Lorenzo looked back at Isabella.
"The woman behind the Black Table."
Marco frowned.
"Who is she?"
Lorenzo's answer was quiet.
"That's what we're going to find out."
He picked up Mia.
The little girl wrapped her arms around his neck.
Lorenzo looked at the drawing she had made.
Three figures.
A man.
A woman.
A child.
Now he understood.
The drawing hadn't been a warning about Serena.
It had been a prophecy.
And somewhere in New York, a woman who had spent decades manipulating families, politicians, criminals, and kings was waiting for Lorenzo to make his next move.
But the Architect had made one mistake.
She had underestimated what happened when Lorenzo Duca stopped fighting for an empire...
and started fighting for a family.
For the first time in decades, the Black Table had a problem it couldn't buy, poison, threaten, or manipulate.
May you like
A man who had nothing left to lose.
And Lorenzo was coming for her.
