Chapter 7 — The Romano Betrayal

Chapter 7 — The Romano Betrayal
The message arrived at 11:58 p.m.
Your father was not alone when he died.
Lorenzo had read it six times.
He still hadn't moved.
The terrace doors remained open behind him.
Cold air drifted through the curtains.
Inside the estate, the lights were dim.
Most of the staff had gone to bed.
The guards were changing shifts.
And Serena...
Serena was asleep.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Lorenzo pressed the secure call button.
"Marco."
A voice answered immediately.
"Boss."
"Where are you?"
"Security room."
"Lock the entire west wing."
A pause.
"Why?"
"Because nobody leaves."
Marco understood the seriousness immediately.
"Even Serena?"
Lorenzo looked through the glass doors toward the staircase.
"Especially Serena."
Twenty minutes later, Lorenzo entered the security room.
Marco was waiting.
A laptop sat open on the table.
Beside it was the recovered camera.
And a single memory drive.
Marco looked exhausted.
"I watched the footage."
"And?"
"I think you should see it yourself."
Lorenzo sat.
Marco pressed play.
The image appeared.
Black and white.
Grainy.
Twelve years old.
The breakfast room.
The clock showed 7:41 a.m.
Lorenzo's father, Antonio Duca, sat at the table.
He was reading a newspaper.
A cup of coffee rested beside him.
At 7:43, the door opened.
A man entered.
Lorenzo leaned forward.
The man's face was partially hidden.
But the clothes were unmistakable.
Dark suit.
Red tie.
Silver watch.
Lorenzo's breathing stopped.
"Pause."
Marco froze the image.
Lorenzo stared.
"I know him."
"Who?"
"Salvatore Romano."
Marco looked at him.
"Serena's father?"
"Yes."
Lorenzo watched the frozen frame.
Salvatore stood beside Antonio.
They appeared to be arguing.
The audio was weak.
Marco increased the volume.
Antonio's voice emerged.
"You promised me the agreement would end with the merger."
Salvatore answered.
"It will."
"Then why are you threatening my son?"
Silence.
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
His father had known.
He had known about the Romano family.
He had known about a threat against Lorenzo.
The recording continued.
Salvatore stepped closer.
"You made one mistake, Antonio."
"What?"
"You believed your son would inherit your empire."
Antonio laughed bitterly.
"He will."
"No."
Salvatore's voice became cold.
"Your son will inherit your name."
A pause.
"We will inherit everything else."
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
Marco looked at him.
The recording continued.
Antonio stood.
"You'll never get control of Duca Holdings."
Salvatore smiled.
"I don't need to."
He placed a document on the table.
"Your son will give it to us himself."
Antonio looked at the document.
"What is that?"
"The future."
Then the screen went black.
Lorenzo stared.
"That's it?"
Marco shook his head.
"No."
He opened another file.
"This was hidden inside the same drive."
The next recording began.
Different camera.
Different angle.
Same room.
Antonio was standing near the window.
Salvatore was gone.
A woman entered.
Lorenzo recognized her immediately.
His mother.
Elena Duca.
Lorenzo's face changed.
She walked toward Antonio.
"What did he want?"
Antonio answered:
"Everything."
"Did you give it to him?"
"No."
His mother looked relieved.
Then Antonio said:
"Not yet."
Lorenzo leaned closer.
His mother stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Antonio walked toward the safe behind the painting.
"If they want the empire..."
He opened the safe.
"...they'll have to take it from our son."
The footage ended.
Lorenzo sat motionless.
His father had known.
His mother had known.
And someone had been planning against him before he was even old enough to understand the word inheritance.
Marco spoke quietly.
"There's more."
Lorenzo looked up.
Marco opened another file.
This one was labeled:
ROMANO — SUCCESSION PLAN
The screen filled with documents.
Corporate charts.
Bank accounts.
Property records.
Political connections.
Names.
Numbers.
Lorenzo scanned the pages.
His face became colder with every second.
This wasn't an assassination plan.
It was a corporate takeover.
The Romano family had mapped his entire empire.
Every company.
Every property.
Every account.
Every loyal executive.
Every weakness.
Every enemy.
Every debt.
Every person who could be bribed.
At the center was Lorenzo.
A red circle surrounded his name.
Beside it were three words:
ISOLATE. WEAKEN. REMOVE.
Marco whispered:
"They've been planning this for years."
Lorenzo nodded.
"How many?"
"At least twelve."
Lorenzo looked at the dates.
The oldest document was thirteen years old.
One year before his father's death.
Then another.
Twelve years ago.
Eleven.
Ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
The plan had evolved.
But the objective remained the same.
Duca Holdings.
At 1:15 a.m., Lorenzo entered his father's private archive.
The room had been locked since Antonio's death.
Lorenzo had never opened it.
Not fully.
He had always assumed there was nothing inside he needed.
Now he realized that assumption had been exactly what someone wanted.
Marco opened the safe.
Inside were old ledgers.
Contracts.
Photographs.
And a black folder.
On the cover was a handwritten title.
ROMANO.
Lorenzo opened it.
The first page contained a family tree.
Salvatore Romano.
His wife.
Serena.
Three uncles.
Two cousins.
Five companies.
Seven shell corporations.
Lorenzo turned the page.
A list of Duca employees.
Some names were crossed out.
Others were marked with symbols.
Paid.
Compromised.
Controlled.
Lorenzo's stomach tightened.
One name stood at the bottom.
Daniel Cross.
Beside it:
ESSENTIAL.
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
The lawyer hadn't been an accident.
He had been inside the plan from the beginning.
At 2:04 a.m., Marco entered.
"We found the money trail."
Lorenzo looked up.
"How much?"
"Enough to prove everything."
"Show me."
Marco placed a laptop on the desk.
Transactions appeared.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger.
Hundreds of thousands.
Millions.
Payments moved through shell companies.
Duca subsidiaries.
Romano accounts.
Private trusts.
Political consulting firms.
Security companies.
Even medical laboratories.
Lorenzo stared at one transaction.
"What's that?"
"Laboratory payment."
"Who received it?"
Marco opened the details.
A pharmaceutical company.
"Why would the Romano family pay a laboratory?"
Marco looked at him.
"Testing."
"Testing what?"
"Your blood."
Silence.
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
"They've been monitoring the poison."
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Almost four months."
Lorenzo stood.
"Then the poison wasn't meant to kill me immediately."
"No."
"What was it meant to do?"
Marco opened another document.
"Make you appear medically incompetent."
Lorenzo stared.
The plan became clear.
If Lorenzo's hearing deteriorated.
If his health continued to decline.
If doctors documented confusion, fatigue, and neurological symptoms...
then the Romano family could claim he was no longer capable of managing the empire.
They wouldn't need to kill him.
They only needed him alive...
and legally incapacitated.
Lorenzo whispered:
"They wanted guardianship."
Marco nodded.
"Exactly."
A document appeared.
DUCA SUCCESSION CONTINGENCY.
At the top:
If Lorenzo Duca becomes medically incapable of executive control...
The next line:
Temporary authority transfers to the designated marital trustee.
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
"Who is the trustee?"
Marco hesitated.
Then answered:
"Serena Romano."
Lorenzo laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
"So that's the marriage."
"Yes."
"Not love."
"No."
"Not an alliance."
"No."
"A legal weapon."
Marco nodded.
Lorenzo looked at the document again.
"If I marry her..."
"You hand her the keys."
"And if I die?"
"The Romano family takes everything."
Lorenzo leaned back.
For years, Serena had told him she loved him.
She had held his hand.
Kissed him.
Waited beside him.
Pretended to worry about his health.
All while preparing to inherit his empire.
He felt something inside him break.
Not his heart.
That had happened months ago.
His trust.
The last piece of it.
At 2:41 a.m., a guard entered.
"Boss."
"What?"
"We found someone in the east wing."
"Who?"
"Daniel Cross."
Lorenzo stood.
"Where?"
"Your father's office."
"Take me there."
Daniel was standing beside the desk when Lorenzo entered.
He wasn't surprised.
That was the first thing Lorenzo noticed.
Daniel simply adjusted his jacket.
"You're awake."
Lorenzo closed the door.
"You knew."
Daniel said nothing.
"You knew about the Romano plan."
Still nothing.
"You knew about the poison."
Daniel's eyes lowered.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
"You knew my father was investigating them."
Daniel finally spoke.
"I did."
Lorenzo stared.
"How long?"
"Sixteen years."
The answer was almost a whisper.
Lorenzo's expression became dangerous.
"Why?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Because your father made a deal."
"What deal?"
"He agreed to give the Romano family access to part of the empire."
"Why?"
"To prevent a war."
Lorenzo shook his head.
"He would never."
"He did."
"You're lying."
Daniel looked at him.
"Ask yourself why your father recorded everything."
Lorenzo went silent.
"Ask yourself why he created M-17."
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
"What is M-17?"
Daniel's face changed.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared.
"You found it."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you..."
Daniel swallowed.
"...they'll kill everyone."
Lorenzo stepped forward.
"Who?"
Daniel looked directly at him.
"The people your father was trying to expose."
"Romano?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Lorenzo froze.
"Then who?"
Daniel whispered:
"Romano was only one branch."
Silence.
"The real organization is much larger."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"How large?"
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Large enough that your father's death was signed by people you've met."
Lorenzo stared at him.
"People in this house?"
Daniel nodded.
"People in your government."
Another nod.
"People who sit at your table."
Daniel stopped.
"And one of them..."
He looked toward the door.
"...is the person you trust most."
Lorenzo's blood went cold.
"Serena?"
Daniel said nothing.
Lorenzo grabbed him by the collar.
"Is it Serena?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Lorenzo released him.
"Then who?"
Daniel looked terrified.
He opened his mouth.
But before he could answer—
BANG.
The window exploded.
Daniel collapsed.
Lorenzo dropped behind the desk.
Marco rushed into the room.
"Sniper!"
Security guards flooded the hallway.
Lorenzo looked at Daniel.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"Daniel!"
The lawyer struggled to breathe.
Lorenzo grabbed his hand.
"Who?"
Daniel's eyes were fading.
He whispered one word.
"Mother."
Lorenzo froze.
"My mother?"
Daniel nodded weakly.
"Your mother..."
His voice disappeared.
Then he stopped breathing.
Lorenzo stood over Daniel's body.
His mind refused to accept what he had heard.
His mother had died twelve years ago.
His mother had supposedly been devastated by his father's death.
His mother had disappeared from the public eye afterward.
She had supposedly died three years later.
But Daniel had just said:
Mother.
Not Serena.
Not Salvatore.
Not Romano.
Mother.
Lorenzo turned toward Marco.
"Find my mother's death certificate."
Marco stared.
"Boss?"
"Everything."
He pointed toward Daniel's body.
"Medical records. Funeral records. Cemetery records. Bank accounts."
Marco nodded.
"And her final years."
"Yes."
Lorenzo's voice became ice.
"Because if my mother isn't who I think she is..."
He looked toward the shattered window.
"...then neither is my father's death."
At 4:13 a.m., the first report arrived.
Marco stood outside Lorenzo's office.
"Boss."
"What?"
"Your mother's death certificate is legitimate."
Lorenzo exhaled.
Then Marco continued.
"But there's a problem."
"What?"
"The cemetery record doesn't match."
Lorenzo looked up.
"Explain."
"Your mother was buried under her name."
"And?"
"The grave is empty."
Silence.
Lorenzo stood.
"What?"
Marco placed a photograph on the desk.
The grave.
Opened.
Empty.
No coffin.
No remains.
No explanation.
Only one symbol carved into the stone.
A circle.
M-17.
Lorenzo stared at it.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
Another message appeared.
THE ROMANOS WANT YOUR EMPIRE.
Then:
BUT THEY ARE NOT THE ONES WHO STARTED THIS.
Lorenzo stared.
A final message appeared.
ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE LET YOUR FATHER DIE.
His hands went cold.
Because somewhere in the world...
his mother might still be alive.
And if she was...
she knew the truth about everything.
The poisoning.
The cameras.
The Romano betrayal.
M-17.
His father's death.
And perhaps the most terrifying secret of all:
why Serena had been chosen to marry Lorenzo in the first place.
Lorenzo looked toward the dark window.
For the first time, he understood.
The Romano family had not entered his life by accident.
They had been invited.
May you like
And the person who opened the door...
might have been his own mother.
