Chapter 1: The Name They Erased

Chapter 1: The Name They Erased
The moment the man said his name, the jewelry store didnāt feel like a store anymore.
It felt like a courtroom.
The managerās hands trembled as he stared at the faded certificate on the counter.
āNoā¦ā he whispered again. āThat name is impossible. He died.ā
The homeless man gave a tired smile.
āOfficially,ā he corrected. āYes.ā
The salesman stepped back. āSir, if this is some kind of scamāā
āIt isnāt a scam,ā the man interrupted softly. āItās a cover-up.ā
He turned toward the sapphire ring again.
āThat piece was never sold because it was part of a private commission set. Three rings. One for each of my children.ā
The room went still.
The manager swallowed. āChildren?ā
The man nodded.
āMy wife was supposed to receive them after my death.ā
A pause.
āBut I didnāt die.ā
The air tightened.
āI disappeared,ā he said. āAnd someone took everything else.ā
Security looked unsure nowānot because they believed him yet, but because they werenāt sure they didnāt.
The man leaned closer to the glass case.
āThat ring⦠was meant for my daughter.ā
His voice cracked on the last word.
āAnd if itās here⦠then something happened to her too.ā
No one spoke after that.

Because suddenly, this wasnāt about jewelry anymore.
It was about a missing family.
