Chapter 3: The House That Replaced Him

Chapter 3: The House That Replaced Him
The address led them outside the city.
A gated estate overlooking Lake Michigan.
Modern. Cold. Expensive in a way that didnāt feel like tasteāonly control.
The manager refused to go further.
But the man did not hesitate.
Because now he knew something worse than being erased.
He knew who had replaced him.
The gate opened automatically.
Like it recognized him.
That alone made his stomach drop.
Inside the house, everything was wrong.
Not broken.
Not abandoned.
Rewritten.
His designs were everywhereābut slightly altered. His signature style, but stripped of his initials. His ideas, polished and rebranded under a name he didnāt recognize.
Then he saw the wall.
A family display.
Photos.
A woman.
Two children.
And beside themā
Him.
Except not him.
A man wearing his face.
The homeless man staggered back.
āNoā¦ā he whispered.
Behind him, the manager finally spoke.
āā¦You were declared legally dead.ā
The manās voice came out barely audible.
āI know.ā
A pause.
āBut I wasnāt replaced by absence.ā
He stepped closer to the photo.
āI was replaced by someone wearing my life.ā
And then, softly, almost like a promise:
āI want my children back.ā
A voice echoed from the staircase above.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
āYou shouldnāt have come back.ā
The man looked up slowly.
And for the first time in yearsā
he smiled.
Because the person standing at the top of the stairsā¦
May you like
was wearing his face wrong.
