Chapter 2: The Vault Beneath the Store

The manager led him downstairs after ten minutes of tense silence.

Not because he trusted him.

But because he couldn’t ignore the signature on the document.

The elevator descended past polished floors into a restricted level no customer ever saw.

Cold air. Steel doors. Biometric locks.

ā€œThis vault is for archival pieces only,ā€ the manager said carefully.

The homeless man stopped walking.

ā€œThis wasn’t here before,ā€ he said quietly.

The manager frowned. ā€œIt’s always been here.ā€

ā€œNo,ā€ the man replied. ā€œIt hasn’t.ā€

He stepped closer to the vault door.

And for the first time, his hands shook.

Because he recognized the locking system.

His own design.

He pressed his palm against the panel.

A soft beep.

The system flashed yellow.

The manager stiffened. ā€œHow did youā€”ā€

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he whispered:

ā€œThey changed my code… but they didn’t replace my logic.ā€

A second later, the vault clicked open.

Inside were rows of locked black boxes.

And in the center—

A single display pedestal.

Empty.

With a label beneath it:

ā€œFounder’s Collection – Decommissioned.ā€

The man stepped forward slowly.

ā€œNo,ā€ he said. ā€œThis is wrong.ā€

The manager’s voice tightened. ā€œWhat is wrong?ā€

The man looked up.

ā€œThis is where my final designs were stored.ā€

He turned.

ā€œAnd they’re gone.ā€

A long silence.

Then, from behind them, the security guard spoke quietly.

ā€œā€¦Sir, those pieces were transferred five years ago.ā€

The man froze.

ā€œTransferred where?ā€

The guard hesitated.

ā€œā€¦To a private estate under a new ownership group.ā€

The man’s eyes darkened.

ā€œShow me.ā€
