Chapter 1: The Maid in the Kitchen

Chapter 1: The Maid in the Kitchen

The kitchen clock read 11:47 p.m.

Everyone else had finished dinner hours earlier.

The silver had been polished.

The marble counters shined.

The mansion was silent.

Except for one quiet sob.

Emily Carter sat on the cold tile floor beside the pantry, hugging her knees.

In front of her rested a cracked plate holding the leftovers no one else wanted.

Two pieces of stale bread.

A spoonful of mashed potatoes.

Half a chicken wing.

Dinner.

Again.

She hadn't eaten a proper meal in three days.

Not because the mansion lacked food.

Because Mrs. Agnes Holloway, the house manager, made sure she never received any.

"You don't earn full meals until you earn full wages," Agnes had said that morning after docking another week's pay over a vase Emily had never broken.

Every paycheck became smaller.

Every punishment became harsher.

Emily never complained.

She couldn't.

Her younger brother depended on the money she sent home every month for dialysis treatments.

If she lost this job...

He lost his chance to live.

So she smiled.

Worked sixteen-hour days.

Cleaned rooms she'd never sleep in.

Cooked meals she'd never taste.

And cried only where no one could see.

Or so she thought.

The mansion's owner wasn't supposed to return until Friday.

Instead, Alexander Beaumont walked through the back entrance nearly forty-eight hours early.

The billionaire had canceled a business trip after a major acquisition closed ahead of schedule.

He disliked surprises.

Tonight, life had prepared one for him.

As he crossed the service hallway, he heard something unusual.

Crying.

Not loud.

The kind of crying someone tried desperately to hide.

He followed the sound.

When he pushed open the kitchen door...

He stopped.

A young woman in a faded maid's uniform sat on the floor eating scraps from a cracked plate.

His own staff uniform.

His own kitchen.

His own house.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Emily quickly stood.

"I'm sorry, sir."

She wiped her tears with the back of her sleeve.

"I'll clean this up."

Alexander looked at the nearly empty plate.

"Is this your dinner?"

She hesitated.

"...Yes, sir."

His jaw tightened.

"And everyone else?"

"They... already ate."

He glanced toward the industrial refrigerator overflowing with fresh food.

Then back to the scraps.

Something didn't add up.

Before he could ask another question, high heels clicked across the marble.

Mrs. Holloway entered.

"There you are!"

She glared at Emily.

"I told you servants aren't allowed to sit during work hours."

Only then did she notice Alexander.

Her expression transformed instantly.

"Mr. Beaumont!"

"What a wonderful surprise!"

Alexander never looked away from Emily.

"Why is she eating leftovers on the floor?"

Agnes laughed nervously.

"Oh... she's clumsy."

"She dropped a serving tray earlier."

"I'm teaching her responsibility."

Emily lowered her eyes.

She knew better than to contradict the manager.

Alexander noticed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

He asked quietly,

"When was your last full paycheck?"

Emily didn't answer.

Agnes answered for her.

"We've had to make several deductions."

Alexander turned.

"For what?"

"Broken dishes."

"Late arrivals."

"Poor attitude."

Emily whispered,

"I've never been late."

The room became silent.

Alexander slowly looked back at Agnes.

"You said she had."

Agnes swallowed.

"I... must have remembered incorrectly."

Alexander pressed the intercom button mounted beside the pantry.

"Security."

A voice answered immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Beaumont?"

"Bring payroll records."

"Every deduction made during the last twelve months."

May you like

"And have Human Resources meet me in the kitchen."

Agnes's smile disappeared.
