The following morning, every household employee gathered in the entrance hall.
Alexander stood at the staircase.
Beside him was Emily.
Still wearing the same worn uniform.
But no longer hiding.
Alexander addressed the staff.
"Starting today, every employee will receive full back pay with interest."
Several maids burst into tears.
"Health insurance will be expanded."
"Meal policies are abolished."
"And no manager will ever again deduct wages without board approval."
Finally...
He turned toward Agnes.
"You have five minutes to collect your personal belongings."
"You'll leave through the same servant's entrance you forced others to use."
Agnes's face turned pale.
"You can't do this!"
Alexander looked at her steadily.
"I just did."
Two security officers escorted her outside.
No one applauded.

They simply watched as the woman who had ruled through fear walked out carrying a single cardboard box.
