CHAPTER 11 — The Woman Who Stole Charlotte’s Name

CHAPTER 11 — The Woman Who Stole Charlotte’s Name

Arthur Vale stood in the hospital doorway.

Daniel Cross stood behind him.

Charlotte couldn't move.

The words from Elias Ward still echoed inside her head.

The child your mother gave birth to was not the child they registered.

Her entire identity had suddenly become uncertain.

Her name.

Her inheritance.

Her birth.

Even her mother's last memory of her.

And now Arthur was standing in front of her as if he had every right to demand the truth.

Charlotte looked at him.

"Who am I?"

Arthur's face tightened.

"Charlotte—"

"No."

Her voice shook.

"You don't get to call me that."

She pointed toward Elias.

"He says my identity was changed."

Arthur said nothing.

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Tell me the truth."

Arthur looked at Cross.

Cross remained silent.

Charlotte understood.

They were afraid.

For the first time, she saw fear in Daniel Cross's eyes.

Not fear of her.

Fear of what she might discover.

Then Charlotte noticed something in Cross's hand.

A folder.

White.

Thin.

With a single name printed across it.

EVELYN HART.

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

"Why do you have her file?"

Cross looked at her.

"Because Evelyn Hart is not who you think she is."

The room became silent.

Marcus stepped between Charlotte and Arthur.

"Nobody moves."

Arthur raised his hands.

"We aren't here to hurt her."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Then explain."

Cross placed the folder on the table.

Charlotte stared at it.

"What's inside?"

"Her history."

"Her real history?"

Cross smiled faintly.

"The history she paid people to create."

Charlotte opened the folder.

The first document was a birth certificate.

EVELYN MARIE HART.

Born:

Twenty-six years ago.

Mother:

Unknown.

Father:

Unknown.

Charlotte frowned.

"Twenty-six."

Marcus noticed it too.

"Same year Charlotte was born."

Charlotte continued reading.

The next page was a school record.

Then a passport.

Then university documents.

Then medical records.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Charlotte looked at Cross.

"These are fake."

"Most of them."

"Who created them?"

"Evelyn."

Charlotte turned another page.

A photograph.

Evelyn at seventeen.

Another at eighteen.

Another at twenty.

Another at twenty-two.

Her face looked almost identical.

But something was wrong.

Charlotte held one photograph beside another.

"The dates don't match."

Cross nodded.

"Because she wasn't Evelyn Hart."

Charlotte's heart began pounding.

"Who was she?"

Cross answered:

"Someone who died."

Charlotte stared.

Cross continued.

"Thirty years ago, a girl named Elena Marrow was born into a poor family."

He opened another file.

"Her mother died when she was young."

"Her father disappeared."

"She entered the foster system."

"She learned very quickly that names had value."

Charlotte frowned.

"What does that have to do with Evelyn?"

"Everything."

Cross placed another photograph beside the first.

The woman looked different.

Older.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Charlotte whispered:

"That's Evelyn."

"Her original name was Elena."

"Then where did Evelyn Hart come from?"

Cross looked toward Arthur.

"From your family."

Arthur closed his eyes.

Charlotte turned.

"My family created her?"

"Your grandfather did."

Arthur finally spoke.

"Elena was brought into Solmere's orbit when she was sixteen."

"Why?"

"Because she was intelligent."

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

"You don't recruit a teenager into a billion-dollar corporation."

Arthur looked at her.

"We did."

"Why?"

"Because she had something we needed."

"What?"

"Your mother's trust."

Charlotte froze.

"She knew my mother?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"She became her assistant."

Charlotte stared.

"Evelyn was my mother's assistant?"

Arthur nodded.

"Before you were born."

Charlotte felt sick.

"So Evelyn knew my mother for years."

"Yes."

"And she knew me."

"Yes."

"Then why did she pretend she didn't?"

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Because your mother discovered what Evelyn was doing."

Charlotte looked at Cross.

"What was she doing?"

Cross answered:

"Building a replacement."

The words seemed absurd.

Charlotte stared at him.

"A replacement for me?"

Cross nodded.

"Not just a replacement."

He opened another file.

"A successor."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Evelyn was trained to become you."

"Your mannerisms."

"Your signature."

"Your handwriting."

"Your preferences."

"Your medical history."

"Your legal identity."

Charlotte shook her head.

"That's impossible."

Cross opened a small envelope.

Inside were handwritten samples.

Charlotte looked at them.

Her signature.

Perfectly copied.

Then another.

Her handwriting.

Another.

Her mother's nickname.

Charlotte felt dizzy.

"She studied me."

"Since childhood."

"Why?"

Cross looked at her.

"Because the plan was never to kill you immediately."

Charlotte stared.

"Then what?"

"To make you disappear."

He placed another document on the table.

IDENTITY TRANSFER PROGRAM.

Charlotte read the first paragraph.

Her name would be gradually removed from corporate records.

Her financial accounts would be frozen.

Her medical records altered.

Her education records rewritten.

Her photographs manipulated.

Her legal signature replaced.

And eventually—

Evelyn Hart would become Charlotte Victoria Vale.

Charlotte's face went white.

"They were going to replace me with her."

"Yes."

"Why didn't they?"

Cross smiled.

"Your mother stopped them."

Charlotte remembered Victoria's final message.

I couldn't trust my own lawyers.

She whispered:

"Mom found out."

Arthur nodded.

"She did."

"What happened?"

"She confronted Evelyn."

"And?"

"Evelyn disappeared."

Charlotte frowned.

"But she came back."

"Years later."

"As Evelyn Hart."

Charlotte looked at the documents.

"She rebuilt herself."

Cross nodded.

"She spent years becoming the woman everyone believed she was."

Marcus opened another file.

"There's something here."

Charlotte turned.

He pointed toward a financial record.

Evelyn had received payments from dozens of Solmere accounts.

Not salaries.

Investment transfers.

Property purchases.

Private education.

Legal services.

Identity documents.

Marcus looked stunned.

"She spent millions creating herself."

Cross corrected him.

"Not creating herself."

He pointed to the file.

"Creating Charlotte."

Charlotte stared.

The entire thing suddenly made sense.

Evelyn had not merely wanted Solmere.

She wanted Charlotte's place in Solmere.

She wanted the name.

The inheritance.

The authority.

The history.

Everything.

Charlotte whispered:

"She wanted my life."

Cross nodded.

"Yes."

The door opened.

A woman walked into the room.

White silk blouse.

Perfect hair.

Controlled expression.

Evelyn Hart.

Charlotte turned.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Evelyn looked at the documents.

Then at Charlotte.

Then at Cross.

Her expression remained calm.

"You always were difficult to erase."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Don't come any closer."

Evelyn ignored him.

She looked at Charlotte.

"Do you know what your mother did?"

Charlotte answered:

"She protected me."

Evelyn laughed.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Your mother destroyed everything."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"You stole my identity."

"I saved it."

"You forged my records."

"I corrected them."

"You tried to take Solmere."

"I was supposed to have it."

"Why?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Because your family promised it to me."

Charlotte looked at Arthur.

He said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

"Your grandfather promised that when you disappeared, I would become Charlotte Vale."

Charlotte's face hardened.

"How?"

Evelyn smiled.

"I was already halfway there."

She walked toward the mirror.

"I learned how your mother spoke."

She touched her hair.

"I learned how you dressed."

She smiled.

"I learned how you signed your name."

Then she looked at Charlotte.

"I learned what your father called you."

Charlotte froze.

Evelyn whispered:

"Little star."

Charlotte's face went pale.

That was private.

Only her parents had called her that.

"You were listening."

"Always."

Charlotte's hands trembled.

"How long?"

"Twenty-six years."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Do you know what your mother told me the night she discovered everything?"

Charlotte said nothing.

"She said, 'You will never be my daughter.'"

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

"That was the moment I decided I would become you."

Charlotte stared.

"You murdered her."

Evelyn didn't answer.

Charlotte stepped forward.

"Did you?"

Still silence.

Then Cross spoke.

"Evelyn wasn't the one who gave the order."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Who did?"

Cross looked at Arthur.

Arthur's expression was unreadable.

Evelyn smiled.

"Ask your grandfather."

Charlotte turned toward Arthur.

"Did you order my mother's death?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The room went silent.

Charlotte stared at him.

"You did."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Arthur looked at her.

"Because your mother was going to expose everyone."

"She should have."

"She would have destroyed Solmere."

Charlotte shook her head.

"She was saving it."

Arthur whispered:

"She was destroying the empire I built."

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

"So you killed your own daughter."

Arthur said nothing.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"And you still don't understand."

Charlotte turned.

"What?"

Evelyn smiled.

"Your mother didn't die because she found out who I was."

Charlotte froze.

"She died because she found out who you were."

The room went silent.

Charlotte stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

"Ask your father."

Charlotte's heart stopped.

"My father?"

"Adrian knew."

"Knew what?"

Evelyn looked toward Arthur.

Then Cross.

Then back at Charlotte.

"Your birth wasn't an accident."

Charlotte's breathing became shallow.

"Explain."

Evelyn whispered:

"You were never supposed to inherit Solmere."

Charlotte shook her head.

"That's impossible."

"You weren't even supposed to be born into the Vale family."

Arthur suddenly stepped forward.

"Enough."

Evelyn laughed.

"Afraid?"

Arthur's voice became dangerous.

"Stop."

Evelyn ignored him.

"Your mother was carrying someone else's child."

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

Evelyn looked directly into her eyes.

"Your father wasn't Adrian Vale."

The words shattered everything.

Charlotte stepped backward.

"No."

"Your mother had a secret."

"No."

"She loved someone else."

Arthur shouted:

"Enough!"

Evelyn smiled.

"That's why they replaced the records."

Charlotte looked at Arthur.

"Is it true?"

Arthur couldn't answer.

Charlotte turned toward Cross.

"You know."

Cross nodded.

"I know."

"Then tell me."

He looked at her.

"Your mother's secret was never about another man."

Charlotte stared.

"Then what?"

Cross took a slow breath.

"It was about the person whose blood runs through your veins."

He opened the final file.

Inside was a DNA report.

Charlotte stared at the name.

Her heart stopped.

The biological father listed on the document was not Adrian Vale.

Not Arthur.

Not anyone she had ever known.

The name belonged to a man whose existence had been erased from every Solmere record.

Charlotte whispered:

"Who is this?"

Cross looked at her.

"The founder of Solmere."

Charlotte's face went white.

"He's dead."

Cross shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the hospital door.

"He's alive."

Charlotte turned.

And at that exact moment, her phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a number she had never seen before.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke softly.

"Charlotte."

She froze.

"Who are you?"

The voice answered:

"The man your mother loved."

Charlotte couldn't breathe.

Then he said:

"And the man your grandfather spent twenty-six years trying to erase."

The call ended.

Charlotte stared at the phone.

Evelyn watched her with a strange smile.

And for the first time, Charlotte realized that Evelyn hadn't stolen her name because she wanted to become Charlotte.

She had stolen it because she knew something Charlotte had never been told.

Something about her birth.

Something about her father.

Something that could destroy the entire Vale family.

And somewhere in the city, the real man behind that secret had finally decided to come out of hiding.
