CHAPTER 12 — The Trap Inside Solmere

CHAPTER 12 — The Trap Inside Solmere

By eight the next morning, Charlotte Vale was no longer merely fighting for Solmere.

She was fighting to prove that she legally existed.

The call from the mysterious man had lasted less than thirty seconds.

But one sentence remained lodged in her mind.

The man your mother loved.

Charlotte had barely slept.

Neither had Marcus.

At 7:43 a.m., his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

"What?"

Charlotte looked up.

Marcus listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?"

"The board has called an emergency meeting."

"Why?"

"They've filed an injunction against you."

Charlotte stood.

"On what grounds?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Fraud."

She stared.

"Fraud?"

"They're claiming you knowingly misrepresented your identity to obtain control of Solmere."

Charlotte laughed once.

It was a humorless sound.

"That's impossible."

Marcus shook his head.

"They have documents."

"What documents?"

"Your birth records."

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

"The forged ones."

"Apparently."

"Who filed them?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Daniel Cross."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Of course."

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"They also filed a sworn statement."

"From whom?"

He looked directly at her.

"Evelyn Hart."

The Solmere headquarters had never felt so hostile.

Charlotte stepped into the lobby.

Every employee turned.

Some looked away.

Others whispered.

She heard fragments.

"Fraud."

"Fake identity."

"She could lose everything."

"Did you hear about the court order?"

Charlotte kept walking.

Marcus stayed beside her.

The elevator doors opened.

Before she could enter, a security guard stepped forward.

"Ms. Vale."

Charlotte stopped.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

He swallowed.

"You've been temporarily denied executive access."

Charlotte stared at him.

"Who authorized that?"

"The board."

"I am the owner."

"Until the court determines otherwise."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Show me the order."

The guard handed him a document.

Marcus read it.

His jaw tightened.

"This is temporary."

Charlotte nodded.

"Which means they think they can make it permanent."

She turned toward the boardroom.

"Then let's see how far they've gone."

The boardroom was full.

Every director was present.

So was Evelyn.

She sat at the far end of the table.

Perfectly composed.

Daniel Cross sat beside her.

Arthur Vale was absent.

Charlotte looked at the empty chair.

"Where is my grandfather?"

Cross smiled.

"He has withdrawn from corporate affairs."

"Convenient."

"Very."

Charlotte took the seat opposite Evelyn.

The chairman cleared his throat.

"Ms. Vale, this meeting is not a personal attack."

Charlotte looked around the room.

"Then why did you lock me out of my own building?"

Nobody answered.

The chairman continued.

"Until the court resolves questions surrounding your identity and inheritance rights, the board has a fiduciary obligation to protect Solmere."

Charlotte leaned back.

"From me?"

"From uncertainty."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"Charlotte, nobody wants this to become ugly."

Charlotte looked at her.

"You built an entire identity to replace me."

Evelyn's expression remained calm.

"That's an accusation."

"I have the documents."

"So do I."

She slid a folder across the table.

Charlotte didn't touch it.

"What is it?"

"Evidence that you have been using multiple identities."

Charlotte frowned.

"What?"

Evelyn opened the folder.

Inside were passports.

Bank accounts.

Medical records.

Property records.

Different versions of Charlotte's name.

Charlotte stared.

"I've never seen these."

Evelyn smiled.

"But they carry your signature."

Marcus picked one up.

"These are fabricated."

The chairman looked at him.

"How can you be certain?"

"Because the signatures were copied."

Cross interrupted.

"Convenient."

Marcus turned.

"You know exactly who copied them."

Cross smiled.

"I know what the documents show."

Charlotte looked around the room.

"You're trying to create the appearance that I committed identity fraud."

Evelyn nodded.

"That's exactly what you're doing."

Charlotte laughed.

"I didn't create these documents."

"But you benefited from them."

"How?"

"They gave you access to Solmere."

Charlotte leaned forward.

"No."

She pointed at Evelyn.

"They gave you access to Solmere."

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

The chairman raised his hand.

"Enough."

He placed another document on the table.

"This is the problem."

Charlotte looked down.

A legal notice.

EMERGENCY OWNERSHIP REVIEW.

The first paragraph stated that Charlotte's controlling interest in Solmere would be suspended pending verification of her biological identity.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"Biological identity?"

Cross nodded.

"Given the inconsistencies in your birth records, the court has ordered a DNA examination."

Charlotte stared.

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"No."

Cross smiled.

"You don't have a choice."

Charlotte looked at the document.

"What happens if I refuse?"

The chairman answered:

"The court may interpret refusal against you."

Marcus whispered:

"It's a trap."

Charlotte nodded.

She knew.

If she agreed, they could manipulate the test.

If she refused, they could claim she was hiding something.

Either way, they wanted her cornered.

Charlotte looked at Evelyn.

"You planned this."

Evelyn's eyes remained cold.

"I planned nothing."

"You're lying."

"Prove it."

Charlotte leaned closer.

"I will."

At noon, Charlotte's legal team discovered the second trap.

A bank had frozen three Solmere accounts.

Then five.

Then twelve.

Marcus stared at the notifications.

"How much?"

Charlotte asked.

"Thirty-eight million."

Her stomach dropped.

"Why?"

"Suspicious ownership activity."

"Who reported it?"

"Your board."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

They were starving the company while accusing her of damaging it.

Marcus opened another document.

"There's more."

"What?"

"They've activated the emergency succession clause."

Charlotte looked up.

"What succession clause?"

"Apparently, if the controlling shareholder is deemed legally incapable of exercising ownership rights, the board can appoint an interim controller."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Marcus looked at the paperwork.

"Evelyn Hart."

Silence.

Charlotte laughed.

"They're trying to use the fraud case to make her my legal replacement."

"Yes."

"And if they succeed?"

"You lose Solmere."

Charlotte looked through the glass walls of the boardroom.

Thousands of employees.

Hotels.

Restaurants.

Real estate.

Airlines.

Foundations.

Everything her family had built.

Everything her mother had tried to protect.

All of it could fall into Evelyn's hands.

Not because Evelyn owned it.

Because Charlotte was being legally erased.

That afternoon, the courthouse was packed.

Reporters crowded the entrance.

Cameras flashed.

Questions followed Charlotte.

"Ms. Vale, did you falsify your birth records?"

"Are you actually the heir to Solmere?"

"Did your mother hide your real identity?"

"Is Evelyn Hart the legitimate successor?"

Charlotte kept walking.

Inside the courtroom, Cross looked confident.

Evelyn sat behind him.

Charlotte's attorney placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't react."

Charlotte nodded.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The hearing began.

Cross presented the forged documents.

One after another.

Birth certificate.

Medical record.

School registration.

Bank account.

Passport.

Every document appeared to tell the same story.

Charlotte had allegedly used a false identity.

The prosecutor looked at her.

"Ms. Vale, did you sign these documents?"

"No."

"Are you saying every document is forged?"

"Yes."

"Then why does the signature match yours?"

"Because someone copied it."

"Who?"

Charlotte looked toward Cross.

"Him."

Cross smiled.

The judge frowned.

"Do you have evidence?"

Charlotte's attorney stood.

"Not yet."

The courtroom murmured.

The judge looked at Charlotte.

"Then this court must rely on the documents presently before it."

Charlotte's heart sank.

Cross had prepared everything.

He didn't need to prove she was guilty.

He only needed to create enough doubt.

Then the judge said:

"Until the identity dispute is resolved, control of Solmere Holdings shall be placed under temporary judicial supervision."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

The trap had worked.

Outside the courtroom, Evelyn approached.

"You should have taken the settlement."

Charlotte turned.

"What settlement?"

"The one that would have allowed you to keep a small percentage."

"You offered me ten percent."

"Ten percent is better than nothing."

Charlotte stared at her.

"You really believe you're going to win."

Evelyn smiled.

"I don't have to believe it."

She leaned closer.

"The law is already doing it for me."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Enjoy your victory."

Evelyn smiled.

"I intend to."

Charlotte walked away.

But Marcus stopped her.

"Wait."

He was holding a document.

"What?"

"Look."

It was the court's temporary ownership order.

Charlotte read it.

Then read it again.

"There's a mistake."

Marcus nodded.

"The legal description of the controlling shares is wrong."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning the judge didn't freeze your actual shares."

"Then what did they freeze?"

"The shares registered under the identity of Charlotte Victoria Vale."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"And if that identity is challenged?"

Marcus nodded.

"The court can't legally determine which shares belong to you."

Charlotte stared.

They hadn't merely challenged her identity.

They had created a legal contradiction.

Her real ownership depended on proving she was Charlotte Vale.

But proving that identity depended on records they had deliberately corrupted.

Marcus whispered:

"They built a loop."

Charlotte nodded.

"A legal trap."

That night, Charlotte returned to the hidden room.

She opened the box containing her mother's files.

There had to be something.

Some document.

Some clue.

Anything that could prove who she was.

Then she remembered the strange message from her mother.

The original evidence is in the possession of the only person I know he cannot intimidate.

Her daughter.

Charlotte searched again.

Nothing.

Then she noticed the wall.

The old photograph.

Her mother.

Her father.

Charlotte.

She removed it.

Behind it was another compartment.

Inside was a small envelope.

Her mother's handwriting appeared across the front.

For Charlotte — only after they challenge your name.

Charlotte's hands trembled.

She opened it.

Inside was a single page.

My darling,

If you are reading this, then they have finally done what I feared.

They have challenged your identity.

They will tell you that you are not my daughter.

They will show you documents.

They will show you signatures.

They will show you records.

Do not believe them.

Because the truth was never recorded on paper.

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

She continued.

Your birth was witnessed by three people.

One was your father.

One was me.

The third person is still alive.

Find her.

Charlotte stopped.

"Who?"

The next line answered.

Her name is Elena Marrow.

Charlotte froze.

The name sounded familiar.

Marcus searched his files.

Then his face changed.

"That's Evelyn's real name."

Charlotte looked at him.

"No."

Marcus nodded.

"Elena Marrow."

The same woman Cross had claimed was Evelyn.

The woman who had supposedly been transformed into Charlotte.

Charlotte's hands went cold.

"Then why would my mother name her as a witness?"

Marcus stared at the letter.

"I don't know."

Charlotte read the final sentence.

She knows the truth about the night you were born.

And she knows who ordered your name to be changed.

Charlotte slowly folded the letter.

"Find her."

Marcus nodded.

"We thought she was Evelyn."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the dark window.

"Evelyn Hart is the identity she stole."

"And Elena Marrow?"

Charlotte's voice became cold.

"That's the woman who knows exactly who I am."

Across town, Evelyn stood inside her penthouse.

She watched the courthouse coverage on television.

Charlotte's photograph filled the screen.

The headline read:

HEIRESS IDENTITY UNDER INVESTIGATION

Evelyn smiled.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

"What?"

A man's voice spoke.

"Charlotte found the letter."

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

"Which letter?"

"Victoria's."

Silence.

Evelyn's face went pale.

"Where is she going?"

"Looking for Elena."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"No."

"Should we stop her?"

Evelyn looked toward the city.

For the first time, genuine fear entered her expression.

"Find Elena first."

"And if she refuses to cooperate?"

Evelyn's voice became cold.

"Then make sure Charlotte never hears what she knows."

She ended the call.

But she didn't realize someone was standing behind her.

Arthur Vale.

He had heard everything.

He looked at Evelyn.

"You've gone too far."

Evelyn turned.

"Too far?"

Arthur shook his head.

"You were supposed to replace Charlotte."

"You taught me to."

"You were never supposed to destroy her."

Evelyn smiled.

"You destroyed her mother."

Arthur's face hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"I know everything."

Then she whispered:

"And I know why you changed Charlotte's name."

Arthur froze.

Evelyn smiled.

"Because she wasn't supposed to be your granddaughter."

Arthur's face went white.

And somewhere across the city, Charlotte was already searching for Elena Marrow.

The woman who could prove her identity.

The woman who could destroy Evelyn's.

May you like

And the only witness who knew what really happened on the night Charlotte was born.
