CHAPTER 8 — The Room Behind the Executive Office

CHAPTER 8 — The Room Behind the Executive Office

The old Vale residence stood at the edge of the city like a monument to a family that had spent decades pretending nothing was wrong.

Charlotte had not returned there since her mother's funeral.

She had promised herself she never would.

Now she stood before the iron gates at midnight, staring through the rain at the dark house beyond them.

Marcus stood beside her.

"You don't have to go inside."

Charlotte looked at the second-floor windows.

"My father is inside."

"Daniel Cross said he was."

"That's enough."

Marcus shook his head.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"Then we're walking into it."

Charlotte looked at him.

"No."

She reached into her coat and touched the memory card hidden inside her pocket.

"We're walking into the truth."

The gates opened.

Neither of them knew who had opened them.

That frightened Charlotte more than anything else.

The front door was unlocked.

Charlotte pushed it open.

The smell hit her first.

Dust.

Old wood.

And the faint scent of her mother's perfume.

She stopped breathing for a moment.

Everything looked almost exactly as she remembered.

The grand staircase.

The portrait of Arthur.

The piano.

The chandelier.

Her mother's favorite chair beside the fireplace.

But there was something different.

The house felt watched.

Marcus whispered:

"Stay close."

Charlotte nodded.

They walked toward the executive office.

Her mother's office.

The room where Victoria had spent countless nights working.

The room where she had signed contracts.

Written letters.

Made phone calls.

And possibly discovered the truth that had eventually gotten her killed.

Charlotte opened the door.

The office was dark.

Marcus turned on the lights.

Nothing.

No one.

No father.

No Daniel Cross.

Charlotte frowned.

"Cross lied."

"Maybe."

She walked toward the desk.

The memory of her mother sitting there almost broke her.

She remembered being six years old and climbing onto the chair.

Her mother would pretend to be angry.

"Executives don't climb on desks."

Charlotte would laugh.

"Then I'll be the boss."

Victoria had smiled.

"One day, you will be."

Charlotte touched the chair.

Tears filled her eyes.

She whispered:

"You knew."

Marcus stood behind her.

"What?"

"She knew this would happen."

He didn't answer.

Charlotte walked around the desk.

A framed photograph sat on the corner.

Her mother.

Her father.

Charlotte as a child.

And Arthur in the background.

Charlotte picked it up.

Something felt wrong.

She turned it over.

A handwritten note was taped behind the frame.

The room is behind the office.

Charlotte froze.

"Marcus."

He came closer.

She showed him the note.

He examined the wall.

"There's no door."

"There has to be."

They searched.

Bookshelves.

Cabinets.

Drawers.

Nothing.

Then Charlotte noticed the floor.

One section of the wooden flooring was slightly darker.

She knelt.

Pressed it.

Nothing.

Marcus used his flashlight.

There was a tiny metal circle hidden beneath the desk.

Charlotte pressed it.

A click sounded.

The bookshelf moved.

Slowly.

A narrow passage appeared behind it.

Charlotte stared.

"My mother built a secret room."

Marcus looked inside.

"Apparently."

The passage was barely wide enough for one person.

Charlotte entered first.

The air smelled stale.

At the end was another door.

This one had no handle.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Charlotte placed her finger against it.

The scanner flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Marcus frowned.

"Try another finger."

Charlotte tried her thumb.

Red.

Her palm.

Red.

Then she remembered her mother's watch.

She removed it.

The black crescent on the back suddenly glowed.

A small light appeared on the wall.

Charlotte pressed the watch against it.

The door opened.

Marcus stared.

"Your mother planned everything."

Charlotte stepped inside.

The room was enormous.

And unlike the archive beneath Solmere, this room was not filled with financial records.

It was filled with Charlotte.

Hundreds of photographs.

School records.

Medical files.

Passport copies.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Surveillance photographs.

Even photographs taken through the windows of her childhood home.

Charlotte stared in horror.

"They were watching me."

Marcus looked at the walls.

"Someone was."

She walked deeper into the room.

A large board covered the far wall.

At the center was her name.

CHARLOTTE VICTORIA VALE.

Around it were dozens of red lines.

Her inheritance.

Her education.

Her relationships.

Her movements.

Her medical history.

Everything.

Then Charlotte noticed a second heading.

PROJECT: REMOVAL

Her blood ran cold.

Marcus stepped beside her.

"What does that mean?"

Charlotte read the first document.

Objective: Remove Charlotte Victoria Vale from all controlling interests in Solmere Holdings.

Another document.

Objective: Establish legal incapacity.

Another.

Objective: Create evidence of financial misconduct.

Another.

Objective: Transfer voting rights.

Another.

Objective: Discredit publicly.

Charlotte's hands began shaking.

"They planned this."

Marcus nodded.

"Not recently."

He pointed to the date.

"Eight years ago."

Charlotte stared.

She had been eighteen.

Just beginning university.

Her mother had been alive.

Her father had supposedly been dead.

And someone had already begun planning to erase her.

Charlotte opened another file.

PHASE ONE — CHARACTER DESTRUCTION

Inside were photographs.

Charlotte at parties.

Charlotte drinking with friends.

Charlotte leaving restaurants.

Charlotte arguing with classmates.

Every photograph had been carefully selected.

There were notes beside them.

Potential evidence of recklessness.

Potential substance abuse narrative.

Potential emotional instability.

Charlotte stared.

"They were building a story."

"Yes."

"A story that I was irresponsible."

Marcus nodded.

"So when you inherited Solmere, they could argue you weren't competent to control it."

Charlotte's anger grew.

"Who created this?"

Marcus looked at the documents.

"There's no name."

Charlotte flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

One signature appeared at the bottom.

DANIEL CROSS.

Her stomach tightened.

"Cross."

Marcus nodded.

"He's everywhere."

Charlotte opened another folder.

This one was labeled:

PHASE TWO — MEDICAL.

Her face went pale.

Inside were hospital records.

Psychological evaluations.

Prescriptions.

Medical appointments.

Some of them were real.

Others weren't.

Charlotte shook her head.

"I never had these."

Marcus examined them.

"They're fabricated."

"How?"

"Someone used your medical identity."

Charlotte's voice trembled.

"Why?"

"To establish a pattern."

"A pattern of what?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Instability."

Charlotte closed the folder.

"They wanted to have me declared incompetent."

"Yes."

She turned toward the wall.

"Who signed the medical authorization?"

Marcus looked.

His expression changed.

"Charlotte."

"What?"

He pointed.

The signature belonged to a doctor.

Dr. Adrian Vale.

Charlotte stared.

"That's my father's name."

Silence.

Marcus slowly looked at her.

"Your father was a physician?"

"Yes."

"Then either someone forged his signature..."

Charlotte whispered:

"...or he was involved."

A sound came from behind them.

A floorboard creaked.

Charlotte turned.

Nothing.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then the door slammed.

They were locked inside.

Charlotte rushed toward it.

"Marcus."

He tried the handle.

Nothing.

The room's lights flickered.

A monitor on the wall suddenly turned on.

A video began playing.

Victoria appeared on screen.

Charlotte froze.

Her mother looked exhausted.

Older.

Afraid.

But alive.

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Mom?"

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Charlotte, then the plan worked."

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

"You're seeing the room I created after I realized they were going to erase you."

Victoria paused.

"I couldn't trust the board."

Another pause.

"I couldn't trust the police."

She looked away.

"I couldn't even trust my own lawyers."

Charlotte stared at Marcus.

Victoria continued.

"There are people inside Solmere who have spent years preparing for your disappearance."

Charlotte whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Victoria seemed to hear her.

"Because if you knew, they would know that I knew."

The video continued.

"I needed you to appear ignorant."

Victoria opened a file.

"That was the only way to protect you."

She placed it on the desk.

"Unfortunately, there was one person I couldn't protect you from."

Charlotte leaned closer.

"Who?"

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

"Daniel Cross."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Her mother had confirmed it.

Cross was responsible.

But Victoria wasn't finished.

"He wasn't acting alone."

The screen changed.

A list of names appeared.

Board members.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

And then—

EVELYN HART.

Charlotte stared.

"Why was Evelyn involved?"

Victoria answered:

"Because Evelyn was promised a place inside the new Solmere."

Another name appeared.

VICTOR LANG.

Then:

MARGARET VALE.

Charlotte's heart sank.

Her aunt.

Her mother's closest ally.

The woman who had claimed she was protecting her.

All three had been part of the plan.

Victoria continued:

"The objective wasn't simply to remove you from the company."

She looked down.

"It was to remove your name from history."

Charlotte frowned.

"What?"

Victoria's voice became quieter.

"They wanted to prove you were never the rightful heir."

The screen displayed a document.

A forged birth certificate.

Charlotte stared.

Her name had been altered.

Her father's name removed.

Her mother's name replaced.

A completely different identity had been inserted.

Marcus whispered:

"They planned to erase your legal identity."

Charlotte felt sick.

"If they succeeded..."

"You wouldn't have been able to inherit anything."

The video continued.

"They intended to declare you the illegitimate child of a woman who never existed."

Charlotte's hands shook.

"They were going to make me disappear."

Victoria nodded.

"Legally first."

She looked toward the camera.

"Then physically."

The screen went black.

Charlotte stood motionless.

Marcus broke the silence.

"We need to get out."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Not yet."

He frowned.

"Charlotte."

"There's something else."

She walked toward the far wall.

A large photograph showed Victoria standing with Daniel Cross.

Behind them was a man.

Charlotte zoomed in.

Her father.

Alive.

Standing in the background.

She stared.

"This photograph was taken after his supposed death."

Marcus looked at the date.

"Three years after."

Charlotte's breathing stopped.

"Then my mother knew he was alive."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Charlotte searched through the photographs.

There were more.

Her father.

Different locations.

Different dates.

Always watching.

Always distant.

Then she found the last photograph.

It showed her father standing beside Daniel Cross.

And behind them—

Arthur Vale.

Charlotte stared.

All three men were together.

Her father.

Cross.

Arthur.

The three people at the center of the conspiracy.

She turned the photograph over.

One sentence was written on the back.

THEY NEVER LOST CONTROL OF SOLMERE.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"They're still controlling it."

Marcus nodded.

"Through proxies."

Charlotte looked toward the locked door.

"Then why would Cross contact me?"

"Because he wants something."

"The will."

"The evidence."

"The memory card."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

"He wants me to come to him."

"Why?"

Charlotte held up the photograph.

"Because he knows my father is the one person I can't refuse to save."

The monitor suddenly came back on.

A live video replaced the old recording.

Daniel Cross appeared.

Charlotte froze.

He was sitting in a dark room.

Beside him was a man.

Charlotte couldn't see his face.

Cross smiled.

"Good evening, Charlotte."

She stepped toward the screen.

"Where is my father?"

Cross ignored the question.

"You found the room."

"Did you build it?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

"Your mother."

Charlotte clenched her fists.

"You forged her will."

Cross smiled.

"Yes."

"You tried to erase me."

"Yes."

"You planned to destroy my identity."

"Yes."

His calmness made her furious.

"Why?"

Cross leaned toward the camera.

"Because your mother made one unforgivable mistake."

"What?"

"She changed the beneficiary."

Charlotte froze.

Cross smiled.

"Your mother originally intended to leave Solmere to someone else."

"Who?"

Cross looked at the man beside him.

Then back at Charlotte.

"Your father."

Charlotte's heart stopped.

"Why?"

"Because he was the rightful heir."

"To Solmere?"

"No."

Cross's expression became cold.

"To something much bigger."

Charlotte stared.

"What?"

Cross leaned back.

"Ask your father."

The camera shifted.

The man beside him slowly turned.

Charlotte saw his face.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Her father.

Alive.

Older.

Bruised.

But unmistakably him.

"Dad."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Charlotte."

She moved toward the screen.

"Where are you?"

Her father looked directly at her.

"Listen to me."

Cross immediately stood.

"Don't."

Her father ignored him.

"Charlotte, your grandfather isn't protecting you."

Cross grabbed his shoulder.

"Stop."

Her father shouted:

"Your grandfather is the one who ordered your mother's death!"

The screen went black.

Charlotte froze.

Marcus stared at her.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then the hidden room's lights went out.

A final message appeared on the monitor.

THE ORIGINAL WILL IS NOT IN THE ROOM.

Then another:

IT IS WITH YOUR FATHER.

Charlotte stared at the words.

Her mother had built the room to preserve the truth.

Cross had tried to destroy it.

Her grandfather had hidden the past.

Her father was alive.

And now Charlotte knew the real war had never been about Solmere.

It had always been about who would control the truth.

Marcus finally spoke.

"We need to leave."

Charlotte nodded.

But before they reached the door, a final line appeared on the monitor.

COME ALONE, CHARLOTTE.

Then:

OR YOUR FATHER DIES BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Her mother had spent years preparing her for this moment.

And for the first time, Charlotte understood why.

Because the only way to save her father...

May you like

was to finally become the woman everyone had spent years trying to erase.

TO BE CONTINUED.
