Chapter 13 – The Choice Between Revenge and Love

Chapter 13 – The Choice Between Revenge and Love

Dominic DeLuca had spent most of his life believing one thing.

Control was survival.

The moment you lost control, someone else decided your fate.

His father taught him that.

His enemies confirmed it.

His own mistakes reinforced it.

But Grace Miller had introduced him to a dangerous idea.

A person could survive without becoming cruel.

And that terrified him more than any enemy ever had.

The name Daniel gave him remained in his mind.

The person who stole Margaret's notebook.

The person inside his organization.

The person close enough to know everything.

Daniel.

Dominic had trusted him for fifteen years.

Not because Daniel was loyal.

Because Daniel had proven it.

Again.

And again.

And again.

But betrayal was different.

Betrayal didn't come from strangers.

It came from people who knew where to place the knife.

"Say it again."

Dominic said.

Daniel stood across from him in the office.

For the first time in years...

Daniel looked nervous.

"The person who accessed your mother's files was connected to our internal security network."

"That doesn't answer my question."

Daniel remained silent.

Dominic's voice hardened.

"Who?"

Before Daniel could respond, another voice interrupted.

"Me."

Dominic turned.

Grace stood in the doorway.

Daniel looked surprised.

"You shouldn't be here."

Grace ignored him.

She looked at Dominic.

"You already know."

Dominic said nothing.

Because he did.

He knew before Daniel spoke.

But accepting it was different.

"Why?"

Dominic asked.

Daniel looked down.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Dominic laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

"Everyone says that."

Daniel looked up.

"Your father said it."

"Your mother said it."

"Thomas said it."

A pause.

"Now me."

Dominic stepped closer.

"And you thought stealing evidence was protection?"

Daniel swallowed.

"I thought keeping you away from the truth was protection."

The words landed harder than an accusation.

Because they sounded familiar.

"Explain."

Daniel took a breath.

"Twelve years ago, your father wasn't just investigating Vivian."

"He discovered who was above her."

Dominic's expression changed.

"And?"

"He was going to expose them."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Grace.

Then back at Dominic.

"Your uncle."

Silence.

The name was impossible.

Dominic's uncle had died years before.

A respected businessman.

A family man.

A person nobody questioned.

"No."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Grace watched Dominic.

She saw something she had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not power.

Pain.

"You're lying."

Dominic whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

"I wish I was."

He placed a file on the desk.

"Your father discovered your uncle had been using the family network for illegal deals."

"He created the Whitmore system."

"Vivian managed it."

"Your father wanted out."

Dominic opened the file.

Documents.

Photos.

Transfers.

Everything connected.

"He killed my father."

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The old Dominic would have reacted immediately.

He would have called his people.

He would have started a war.

But Grace stepped forward.

"Dominic."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Before you decide what happens..."

"Ask yourself why he hid it."

Dominic looked at Daniel.

"Why?"

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father made me promise."

"What?"

"He told me if anything happened to him..."

"I was never supposed to tell you."

Dominic stared.

"Why?"

Daniel answered quietly:

"Because he knew you."

A pause.

"He knew you would destroy everything trying to punish the person responsible."

Dominic looked away.

Because it was true.

That night, Dominic went to Margaret's room.

She was awake.

She always seemed to know when something changed.

"You know."

It wasn't a question.

Margaret looked at him.

"About Daniel?"

Dominic stopped.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

His anger rose.

"Everyone knew something."

"Everyone except me."

Margaret looked hurt.

"Dominic."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"I spent twelve years hunting Vivian."

"I destroyed people."

"I built my entire life around revenge."

A pause.

"And the person I was chasing wasn't even the one who did it."

Margaret reached for his hand.

"Your father wanted you to live."

"I don't know how."

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

"I don't know who I am without this."

Margaret squeezed his hand.

"Then maybe it's time you find out."

Meanwhile, Grace sat outside the hospital with Noah.

The city moved around them.

Cars.

People.

Normal life.

But their life had changed forever.

"Do you think he's okay?"

Noah asked.

Grace knew who he meant.

"Dominic?"

Noah nodded.

Grace thought for a moment.

"I think he's finally feeling things he spent years avoiding."

"Is that good?"

She looked at the hospital lights.

"I don't know."

Then she smiled slightly.

"But I think it's necessary."

The next morning, Dominic made a decision.

Not the decision everyone expected.

He did not send people after his uncle.

He did not start a war.

He did not seek revenge.

Instead, he called federal investigators.

He handed them everything.

Every document.

Every account.

Every name.

Including his own family's involvement.

Daniel watched him sign the final statement.

"Are you sure?"

Dominic looked at the papers.

"For years, I thought winning meant making my enemies suffer."

He placed the pen down.

"I was wrong."

Later that day, Grace found him outside The Bellamy.

The place where everything started.

"You changed."

Dominic looked at her.

"Is that a good thing?"

She smiled.

"Ask me again in ten years."

For the first time...

Dominic laughed.

Actually laughed.

Grace stared.

"What?"

"Nothing."

But she knew.

That sound mattered.

Then Dominic looked at her.

"I don't know what happens next."

Grace nodded.

"Neither do I."

A pause.

"But maybe that's the point."

They stood together beneath the Chicago lights.

Not as powerful man and invisible waitress.

Not as savior and victim.

Just two people who had survived the truth.

But neither of them noticed the black car parked across the street.

Inside, someone watched.

Someone who had escaped.

Someone who had been waiting.

A phone call connected.

"He chose love."

A pause.

The voice on the other end answered:

"Then we take away the reason he chose it."

The person smiled.

"Begin phase two."

Because Vivian Whitmore had fallen.

But she had not been the final enemy.

She had only been the first door.

And behind that door...

May you like

Something far more dangerous was waiting.
