Chapter 7 – The Brother’s Secret

Chapter 7 – The Brother’s Secret
Noah Miller had always hated hospitals.
Not because of the smell.
Not because of the machines.
Not because of the endless white walls that made every day feel the same.
He hated hospitals because they reminded him of something he couldn't fix.
His mother.
Every time he walked into Saint Catherine's Medical Center, he felt sixteen again.
A scared kid.
Standing beside Grace.
Pretending he understood what the doctors were saying.
Pretending he wasn't terrified.
Grace had always been the strong one.
She made plans.
She paid bills.
She smiled when things got worse.
Noah knew the truth.
Grace was tired.
She was just better at hiding it.
The morning after Vivian Whitmore's visit, Noah arrived at the hospital earlier than usual.
Grace noticed immediately.
"You skipped school."
Noah looked away.
"Maybe."
"That wasn't a question."
He sighed.
"Yes."
Grace crossed her arms.
"Noah."
"I needed to talk to Mom."
Her expression softened.
The anger disappeared.
Because she understood.
There were days when sitting beside Ellen felt more important than anything else.
"How long?"
"What?"
"How long have you known something was wrong?"
Noah froze.
Grace noticed.
And her heart sank.
"Wait."
She stepped closer.
"What do you mean?"
Noah looked at the floor.
"I didn't know everything."
"Know what?"
He didn't answer.
"Answer me."
Her voice was not angry.
It was afraid.
Finally Noah reached into his backpack.
He pulled out an old envelope.
Grace stared.
"Where did you get that?"
"Mom's closet."
"When?"
"A few months ago."
Grace looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Noah swallowed.
"Because I was scared."
The same word again.
Everyone was scared.
Margaret.
Thomas.
Ellen.
Noah.
Fear had been controlling people's lives for years.
Grace opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A man standing outside Saint Catherine's Medical Center.
She didn't recognize him.
But Noah did.
"I saw him before."
Grace looked up.
"Who?"
Noah pointed.
"That man."
The photograph showed Thomas Vale.
Vivian Whitmore's former driver.
The man connected to both families.
"Where did you see him?"
Grace asked.
Noah hesitated.
"The night Mom went to the hospital."
Grace felt cold.
"What?"
"I was fourteen."
"I woke up because I heard noise."
Noah looked at the photograph.
"Mom was having trouble breathing."
"I called 911."
"But before the ambulance came..."
He stopped.
"Someone else arrived."
Grace's voice lowered.
"Who?"
"That man."
The room became silent.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Noah looked ashamed.
"Because he told me not to."
Grace stared.
"He threatened you?"
"No."
Noah shook his head.
"That's what made it worse."
Grace frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He was nice."
That answer confused her.
"He gave me his coat because I was cold."
"He stayed until the ambulance came."
"He told me everything would be okay."
Noah looked at his sister.
"But then he said something."
"What?"
"He said..."
Noah swallowed.
"If anyone asks, you didn't see me."
Grace felt her stomach tighten.
Meanwhile, Dominic was learning something equally disturbing.
The file on Noah Miller had been incomplete.
Not because information was missing.
Because someone removed it.
Daniel placed the updated report on Dominic's desk.
"There is more."
Dominic looked up.
"About Noah?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"He was fourteen during your mother's accident."
"I know."
"But he was also present when Ellen Miller was brought in."
Dominic frowned.
"Why wasn't this reported?"
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Because the report was changed."
Dominic stood.
"Who changed it?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
That told Dominic everything.
"Say it."
Daniel finally spoke.
"Someone inside the hospital administration."
"Who had access?"
A pause.
"Saint Catherine's director."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"Name."
Daniel looked at the document.
"Dr. Adrian Whitmore."
The room went silent.
Vivian Whitmore.
Her charity.
Her hospital.
Her employees.
Her fingerprints everywhere.
But there was another question.
Why hide Noah?
That evening, Grace brought Noah home.
She made dinner.
A simple meal.
Something their mother used to make.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Noah finally said:
"Are you angry?"
Grace looked at him.
"No."
"I kept a secret."
"Because you were scared."
He looked down.
"I'm sorry."
Grace reached across the table.
"You're my brother."
"I don't need you to be perfect."
"I need you to trust me."
Noah nodded.
Then quietly said:
"There's something else."
Grace froze.
"What?"
"I found another thing in Mom's closet."
He pulled out a small key.
Old.
Rusty.
Grace stared.
"What does it open?"
Noah shook his head.
"I don't know."
Across the city, Dominic received a message.
A photograph.
The key.
Sent anonymously.
The message underneath contained only one sentence:
THE BOY KNOWS MORE THAN THE MOTHER.
Dominic immediately called Grace.
She answered.
"Hello?"
His voice was serious.
"Where is Noah?"
She looked toward the kitchen.
"He's here."
"Keep him with you."
Grace felt fear rise.
"Why?"
A pause.
Then Dominic said:
"Because someone just realized your brother is the last person alive who saw the beginning of the truth."
At that exact moment...
The lights in Grace's apartment went out.
The room fell dark.
Noah stood up.
"Grace?"
She reached for him.
Then she heard it.
A sound from the hallway.
A slow movement.
Someone outside the door.
Grace whispered:
"Noah."
"What?"
"Don't move."
The door handle turned.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone had found them.
And this time...
They weren't coming for information.
May you like
They were coming to erase it.
