Chapter 5 – The Mother Who Remembered

Chapter 5 – The Mother Who Remembered

For four years, Dominic DeLuca had lived with one certainty.

Someone had tried to destroy his family.

The question was never whether there was an enemy.

The question was who.

He had searched through business records.

Bank accounts.

Private meetings.

Political connections.

He had followed every trail.

Broken every alliance.

Destroyed every person connected to the Moretti name.

And still...

Something had never made sense.

Because enemies wanted power.

They wanted money.

They wanted revenge.

But the person who attacked Margaret had done something different.

They had created confusion.

They had left questions.

And now the biggest question was standing in front of him.

His own mother.

"She's awake."

The words from the nurse came through Dominic's phone.

He was already moving before the call ended.

The hospital hallway blurred around him.

People stepped aside.

They always did.

But this time Dominic wasn't walking like the man Chicago feared.

He was walking like a son who was terrified.

When he entered Margaret's room, Grace was already there.

She stood beside the bed.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were fixed on Margaret.

Dominic stopped.

The sight was strange.

Two women who should have never crossed paths.

One from a world of wealth and power.

One from a world of hospital bills and double shifts.

Yet both were connected by the same night.

Margaret looked at Dominic.

For a moment, she looked exactly like the mother he remembered.

Strong.

Calm.

Certain.

Then she looked away.

"Grace should leave."

The words surprised him.

Grace immediately stepped back.

"I can go."

"No."

Margaret looked at her.

"Stay."

Grace stopped.

Dominic noticed.

His mother was afraid.

Not of Grace.

Of what she was about to say.

"Mother."

Margaret looked at him.

"You found Thomas."

It wasn't a question.

Dominic's expression changed.

"How do you know?"

A tired smile appeared.

"Because I knew you would eventually."

The room became silent.

"Who is Thomas working for?"

Dominic asked.

Margaret closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, she looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"Me."

The word hit the room.

Grace looked confused.

Dominic looked wounded.

"You hired the man who was connected to your accident?"

Margaret looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I hired the man who tried to save me."

Dominic said nothing.

Because he didn't understand.

And he hated not understanding.

"Four years ago," Margaret began, "I was driving home."

Her voice was quiet.

"It was raining."

"I remember the road."

"I remember the headlights behind me."

"I remember realizing they weren't slowing down."

Grace listened carefully.

Dominic stood perfectly still.

"The impact wasn't random."

Margaret's fingers tightened around the blanket.

"Someone wanted me off that road."

Dominic felt anger rising.

Not the explosive kind.

The dangerous kind.

"Who?"

Margaret looked at him.

"I don't know."

His expression hardened.

"But you just said—"

"I know who arranged it."

A pause.

"I don't know who ordered it."

That distinction mattered.

Because Dominic understood.

Someone had always been moving pieces.

But who was the player?

"Why didn't you tell me?"

The question was not angry.

It was hurt.

The kind only a child could ask a parent.

Margaret looked down.

"Because I knew what you would do."

Dominic said nothing.

"You would have destroyed everyone connected."

"I already did."

"I know."

Her voice softened.

"And that is why I was afraid."

Grace watched them.

She saw something nobody else would have believed.

Dominic DeLuca was not afraid of enemies.

He was afraid of disappointing his mother.

"Who helped you?"

Dominic asked.

Margaret looked toward Grace.

Then away.

"Thomas."

"Vivian's driver?"

Margaret nodded.

"Thomas had worked for Vivian for fifteen years."

Dominic frowned.

"Why would he help you?"

"Because he knew the truth."

"What truth?"

Margaret took a breath.

"The car that hit me belonged to Vivian Whitmore."

Silence.

Dominic stepped back.

"No."

Margaret looked at him sadly.

"I wish I was wrong."

Grace felt the air disappear from the room.

Vivian.

The woman she had stopped.

The woman who protected her afterward.

The woman everyone respected.

Could she really be responsible?

"Why?"

Dominic whispered.

Margaret looked at him.

"Because your father made a mistake."

Dominic froze.

"My father?"

"Your father discovered something about Vivian."

"What?"

Margaret hesitated.

Then said:

"Her charity empire wasn't built the way people believed."

The room remained silent.

"Your father was going to expose her."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"My father died before he could."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

The pieces began moving.

His father's death.

His mother's accident.

Vivian's influence.

The hospital connection.

But something still bothered him.

"Why did Thomas save you?"

Margaret looked toward the window.

"Because he finally realized what Vivian was capable of."

Grace spoke quietly.

"Then why didn't he come forward?"

Everyone looked at her.

It was a simple question.

But an important one.

Margaret answered:

"Because he was afraid."

"Of Vivian?"

Margaret nodded.

"Of what she would do."

Dominic turned away.

For years, he believed fear was something only weak people felt.

Now he wondered how many people had been trapped by it.

Later that evening, Dominic and Grace stood outside the hospital.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally Grace said:

"Your mother is incredible."

Dominic looked at her.

"She kept this secret for four years."

"Because she was protecting you."

"Was she?"

Grace frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Dominic looked through the hospital window.

"Maybe she was protecting me from becoming worse."

Grace studied him.

"You really think revenge changed you?"

Dominic laughed quietly.

A rare sound.

"I know it did."

She didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Maybe."

He looked at her.

"But people can change twice."

The sentence surprised him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone can become worse."

A pause.

"And they can become better again."

Dominic looked at her.

The strange thing was...

He believed her.

That night, Daniel sent him another file.

A photograph.

A document.

A name.

The name made Dominic stop breathing.

Because the person who had been funding Vivian Whitmore's hidden operations...

Was someone Dominic trusted.

Someone inside his own circle.

The message contained only four words.

THE ENEMY WAS NEVER OUTSIDE.

Dominic stared at the screen.

Then looked at the hospital room where his mother slept.

And for the first time in four years...

He realized something terrifying.

The person who destroyed his family...

May you like

May have been standing beside him the entire time.
