Chapter 9 – The Price of Protection

Chapter 9 – The Price of Protection
Protection always sounded noble.
A beautiful word.
A word parents used when they sacrificed.
A word soldiers used when they fought.
A word powerful people used when they justified the things they did in the shadows.
But Dominic DeLuca had learned something important.
Protection always had a price.
The only question was...
Who was forced to pay it?
By noon, the entire city knew the story Vivian Whitmore wanted them to believe.
News channels repeated it.
Social media exploded with speculation.
Business reporters analyzed every detail.
MARGARET DELUCA ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT BEFORE ACCIDENT
The headline appeared everywhere.
The woman who spent four years in a wheelchair.
The woman people believed was a victim.
Now they were questioning her.
And Vivian knew exactly what she was doing.
She wasn't trying to win a legal battle.
She was controlling the story.
Because once the public believed Margaret was guilty...
Every piece of evidence Dominic presented would look like revenge.
Not justice.
Dominic stood inside his office watching the city below.
Daniel stood behind him.
"They moved quickly."
Dominic didn't answer.
"Too quickly."
Daniel nodded.
"They had this prepared."
"Yes."
Dominic looked at the documents.
"She knew we were coming."
The thought bothered him.
Not because Vivian was smart.
He already knew that.
What bothered him was something else.
Someone had warned her.
Someone close.
"Find the leak."
Daniel nodded.
"Already working on it."
Then Dominic's phone rang.
Grace.
He answered immediately.
"Are you safe?"
There was silence.
Then:
"That was your first question?"
Dominic frowned.
"What should it have been?"
Grace's voice softened.
"Nothing."
A pause.
"I'm just surprised."
Dominic leaned against the desk.
"Why?"
"Because everyone keeps asking what happened."
She swallowed.
"You asked if I was safe."
For a moment, Dominic didn't know how to respond.
Because to him, it was obvious.
The people he cared about were protected first.
But he had never admitted he cared.
"Grace."
"Yes?"
"Where are you?"
"At home."
"With Noah?"
"Yes."
"Stay there."
She sighed.
"Dominic."
"No."
The firmness surprised her.
"Listen to me."
A pause.
"Vivian knows about you."
"She knew about your mother."
"She knows Noah saw Thomas."
"And now she knows you are connected to me."
Grace became quiet.
Then:
"Connected?"
Dominic froze.
The word had escaped before he considered it.
"I mean—"
"No."
Her voice was quieter.
"What did you mean?"
Dominic looked away.
For years, he had controlled every conversation.
Every negotiation.
Every confrontation.
But Grace had a way of making him face things he avoided.
"I mean she will use anyone close to me."
Grace understood.
But she didn't let him escape.
"Anyone close to you?"
Silence.
Finally, Dominic answered.
"Yes."
That evening, Grace found out exactly what Vivian's next move was.
The hospital called.
They were removing Ellen from Saint Catherine's.
Grace arrived immediately.
"Why?"
The administrator looked uncomfortable.
"Funding issues."
"My mother's treatment is covered."
"Not anymore."
Grace stared.
"What does that mean?"
The administrator avoided her eyes.
"Your mother's financial assistance has been revoked."
Grace felt the world stop.
"You can't do that."
"I'm sorry."
"Who authorized this?"
The administrator said nothing.
But she didn't need to.
Grace already knew.
Vivian Whitmore wasn't attacking Dominic.
She was attacking the people around him.
The message was clear.
Leave.
Or everyone you love suffers.
Dominic arrived twenty minutes later.
He found Grace standing outside Ellen's room.
She wasn't crying.
That worried him more.
"What happened?"
She looked at him.
"Vivian."
One word.
Enough.
Dominic's face changed.
"Where is your mother being moved?"
"I don't know."
"I'll fix it."
Grace shook her head.
"No."
He stopped.
"What?"
"I don't want you fixing everything."
Her voice broke slightly.
"I want it to stop."
Dominic looked at her.
And for the first time, he understood.
Grace wasn't asking for rescue.
She was asking for an end.
"Dominic..."
She stepped closer.
"You spent four years destroying everyone who hurt you."
A pause.
"But what if they win because you become exactly what they said you were?"
The words hit him.
Because Vivian had predicted it.
She wanted Dominic angry.
She wanted him reckless.
She wanted him to prove her story.
Later that night, Margaret asked Dominic to visit.
He entered her room alone.
His mother looked tired.
"Grace is angry."
Dominic sat down.
"She should be."
Margaret looked surprised.
"You admit that?"
"Yes."
A small smile appeared.
"Then she is already changing you."
Dominic ignored the comment.
"Vivian is attacking innocent people."
"Yes."
"She hurt Grace's mother."
"Yes."
"I want to destroy her."
Margaret looked at him.
"And that is why you cannot."
Dominic stared.
"Why?"
"Because revenge is what she understands."
A pause.
"Justice is what she fears."
The sentence stayed with him.
"Your father understood that."
Dominic looked up.
"What?"
"Your father wasn't trying to destroy Vivian."
"Then what was he doing?"
Margaret reached for a hidden drawer beside her bed.
She pulled out an old notebook.
"I never showed you this."
Dominic took it.
Inside were pages of handwritten notes.
Financial records.
Names.
Dates.
But one page caught his attention.
A list.
At the top:
PEOPLE PROTECTED BY THE WHITMORE SYSTEM
Below were names.
Judges.
Police officers.
Business leaders.
Then one final name.
Dominic stared.
Because it was impossible.
Anthony DeLuca.
His father.
"What is this?"
Margaret whispered:
"Your father wasn't Vivian's enemy."
"He was her partner."
Dominic stood.
"That's not possible."
"It is."
"Then why would she hurt him?"
Margaret looked at him sadly.
"Because your father tried to leave."
The room became silent.
"He knew too much."
"More importantly..."
Margaret looked at Dominic.
"He knew what Vivian was capable of."
Dominic slowly closed the notebook.
The entire foundation of his life had shifted.
His father.
His mother.
Vivian.
Everything he believed was incomplete.
Then Margaret said the words that changed everything.
"The night of my accident..."
Dominic looked up.
"Your father was supposed to be in that car with me."
Silence.
"What?"
Margaret nodded.
"He was going to meet me."
"Someone knew."
Dominic felt cold.
"Who?"
Margaret looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
"The person who protected us."
Before Dominic could ask another question...
His phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
Only one sentence.
WE FOUND THOMAS VALE.
Another message followed.
A photograph.
Thomas standing outside a building.
Alive.
And beside him...
Was Grace's brother, Noah.
Dominic's blood ran cold.
Because the truth was finally becoming clear.
Thomas hadn't disappeared.
He had been hiding.
Protecting someone.
But not Margaret.
Not Dominic.
Noah.
The boy who had been invisible.
The boy everyone ignored.
The boy who had seen the beginning of the war.

And now Vivian Whitmore knew exactly where he was.
