CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1 The Hidden Camera
It was there.
High above the grand staircase, nestled between ornate plaster moldings that had survived nearly a century, a small black dome stared silently over the foyer.
Arthur Vance followed its gaze.
For years, he had barely noticed the security camera. It had become part of the house, as ordinary as the crystal chandelier or the marble columns. But now, in the middle of his mother’s accusation and Clara’s tearful arrest, it suddenly felt like the only honest witness in the mansion.
He pointed toward it.
"That camera."
Everyone turned.
The police officer paused, his hand still resting on Clara's arm.
Arthur's voice became firm.
"Nobody leaves this house until we review its footage."
A flicker—barely noticeable—crossed Eleanor Vance's face.
It disappeared almost instantly.
"Arthur," she said coolly, "the evidence has already been found. The necklace was inside her locker. There's nothing left to discuss."
Arthur didn't look at her.
"Detective..."
The officer introduced himself.
"Detective Harris."
Arthur nodded.
"Detective Harris, please give me thirty minutes."
The detective studied the wealthy businessman standing before him.
Unlike many influential men, Arthur wasn't trying to intimidate the police or make the problem disappear with money.
He simply looked...confused.
And deeply hurt.
"I can allow thirty minutes," Harris replied.
"But if nothing changes, we proceed."
Arthur nodded gratefully.
"That's all I'm asking."
Clara remained standing near the entrance, her wrists still cuffed.
Leo and Toby refused to let go of her apron.
Seven-year-old Leo glared at every adult in the room.
"You've got the wrong person."
Five-year-old Toby buried his face against Clara's side.
"I don't want her to go."
Clara forced a trembling smile despite the tears streaming down her cheeks.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
"No!"
Leo shouted.
"It isn't okay!"
Arthur's heart tightened.
Since Emily's death two years earlier, he had watched his sons slowly withdraw from the world.
Until Clara arrived.
She had never tried to replace their mother.
Instead, she simply listened.
Read bedtime stories.
Packed school lunches.
Remembered birthdays.
Held little hands through nightmares.
Somehow, without anyone realizing it, she had become the heartbeat of the household.
And now...
His own mother wanted her gone.
Arthur turned toward the head of estate security.
"Where's Michael?"
A tall man in his fifties hurried into the foyer.
"I'm here, sir."
"I need footage from every camera covering this entrance, the west hallway, and the staff quarters."
Michael hesitated.
"There may be a problem."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"What kind of problem?"
"The main server stopped responding this morning."
Silence settled across the room.
Arthur slowly turned toward his mother.
Eleanor lifted one elegant eyebrow.
"Surely you're not suggesting I sabotaged your security system."
"I haven't suggested anything."
"Yet."
Michael continued carefully.
"The cameras are still recording locally."
Arthur frowned.
"Meaning?"
"They each keep a temporary backup for seventy-two hours."
Relief spread across Arthur's face.
"So retrieve it."
Michael nodded.
"I'll need access to the control room."
Arthur gestured toward the hallway.
"Go."
As Michael disappeared, Eleanor quietly reached into her blazer pocket.
Her fingers brushed against her phone.
One quick text.
No one would notice.
She lowered her gaze just enough to hide the screen.
Delete everything.
Before she could press send—
Arthur's voice stopped her.
"Mother."
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"Please hand me your phone."
The foyer fell completely silent.
Even Detective Harris looked surprised.
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
Arthur extended his hand.
"If Clara is innocent, someone framed her."
"And if someone framed her..."
His eyes met hers steadily.
"...I don't intend to let them destroy the evidence."
For several long seconds, neither moved.
Finally, Eleanor laughed softly.
"You've become suspicious."
"No."
Arthur answered quietly.
"I've become careful."
She slipped the phone back into her pocket.
"I won't surrender my property because you're emotional."
Arthur didn't argue.
Instead, he looked toward Detective Harris.
"Officer, from this moment forward, nobody leaves this house without your permission."
Detective Harris nodded once.
"Understood."
Twenty minutes later, the mansion's underground security room buzzed with anxious activity.
Rows of monitors illuminated the darkened space.
Michael inserted an encrypted drive into the recording server.
Progress appeared across the screen.
Recovering Local Backup...
12%
27%
41%
No one spoke.
Arthur stood with folded arms.
Detective Harris watched silently from behind.
Even Eleanor had followed them downstairs, though she remained near the doorway.
Only Clara stayed upstairs with the boys.
She didn't want them to see the fear on her face.
The loading bar reached ninety-nine percent.
Then—
The monitor flashed red.
ERROR
Michael frowned.
"No..."
Arthur stepped closer.
"What happened?"
"The backup's corrupted."
Detective Harris sighed.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance."
Arthur refused to move.
"There has to be another copy."
Michael stared at the system logs.
Then his eyes widened.
"There is."
Arthur leaned forward.
"Where?"
Michael pointed toward another monitor.
"This camera."
He enlarged the floor plan.
"The foyer camera records to the main server."
"But..."
He clicked another icon.
"The decorative ceiling camera above the staircase..."
Arthur remembered it immediately.
The older camera installed years before the renovation.
Everyone had assumed it was obsolete.
Michael smiled faintly.
"It has its own independent hard drive."
Arthur felt hope return.
"Can we access it?"
Michael nodded slowly.
"If the drive wasn't damaged..."
"...everything that happened today should still be there."
Arthur looked through the glass window toward the grand staircase overhead.
Someone in this house had told the truth.
Someone had lied.
Within minutes...
A forgotten camera hidden in plain sight would reveal which was which.
Behind them, Eleanor's perfectly composed expression finally cracked.
For the first time that day...
May you like
She looked afraid.
