CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
The Footage Nobody Expected
The security room was so quiet that the hum of the hard drive sounded deafening.
Arthur stood directly behind Michael, his hands pressed against the edge of the console.
Detective Harris folded his arms, patiently waiting.
Eleanor remained near the doorway, her elegant posture unchanged, though the fingers of her right hand tightened around her handbag.
For the first time in years, she wasn't in control.
Michael carefully removed the old hard drive from a locked metal cabinet.
Dust coated its edges.
"This hasn't been accessed since the renovation," he said.
Arthur frowned.
"Does it still work?"
Michael shrugged.
"Let's hope."
He connected the drive to a recovery station.
The screen flickered.
A progress bar appeared.
Reading Archive...
5%.
18%.
34%.
No one spoke.
The only sound was the steady ticking of the antique wall clock hanging above the monitors.
Finally—
Archive Found
Michael released the breath he had been holding.
"It's here."
Arthur's pulse quickened.
"Open today's recording."
Upstairs, Clara sat quietly on the foyer bench with Leo and Toby beside her.
Her wrists were still cuffed.
Detective Harris had allowed the boys to stay with her while the footage was examined.
Toby rested his head against her shoulder.
"They'll see you didn't do it."
Clara forced a smile.
"I hope so."
Leo looked toward the basement door.
"Dad always finds the truth."
Clara wished she shared his confidence.
Back downstairs, the recording filled the monitor.
The timestamp read:
11:42 A.M.
The foyer looked peaceful.
Housekeepers dusted furniture.
A florist arranged fresh white lilies.
Nothing unusual.
Michael increased the playback speed.
The hours passed quickly.
Employees walked through the halls.
Delivery workers arrived.
Children returned from school.
Arthur watched every second.
Then—
"Stop."
Michael froze the video.
Arthur pointed toward the upper hallway.
"Zoom in."
The image sharpened.
A woman appeared near the servants' corridor.
She wore a cream-colored coat.
Dark sunglasses.
White silk gloves.
Her face remained hidden beneath the brim of a wide hat.
Detective Harris leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
"No idea," Arthur replied.
Michael resumed playback.
The woman looked around carefully before disappearing into the staff hallway.
Five minutes later...
She emerged again.
This time carrying nothing.
She left through the side entrance.
Arthur frowned.
"I've never seen her before."
Michael immediately opened another camera angle.
The hallway leading toward the staff lockers.
The mysterious woman appeared again.
She paused outside Clara's room.
Looked over both shoulders.
Then quietly unlocked the door.
Clara's room.
Arthur's expression changed instantly.
"Clara wasn't home then."
Michael checked another recording.
"She was preparing lunch for the boys."
Detective Harris's eyes narrowed.
"So whoever this woman is..."
"...she entered Clara's room while Clara was somewhere else."
Arthur felt hope rise.
"Keep watching."
The woman remained inside for less than two minutes.
When she exited, she adjusted one glove.
Then calmly walked away.
Moments later, Clara herself appeared carrying folded laundry.
She entered her room completely unaware.
She came back out thirty seconds later with fresh towels and continued working.
Nothing about her behavior suggested someone had just hidden a priceless necklace inside her locker.
Arthur looked toward Detective Harris.
"You see?"
The detective didn't answer immediately.
"It certainly raises questions."
Just then—
Michael enlarged the image.
"Wait."
Everyone leaned closer.
As the woman closed Clara's door, sunlight reflected briefly against a polished picture frame hanging in the hallway.
For only an instant...
The reflection caught part of her face.
Not clearly.
But enough.
Arthur stared.
"No..."
Detective Harris looked at him.
"You recognize her?"
Arthur shook his head slowly.
"I almost do."
The reflection vanished before anyone could identify her completely.
Eleanor finally spoke.
"This proves nothing."
Arthur turned toward her.
"It proves someone entered Clara's room."
"It doesn't prove that person planted the necklace."
Detective Harris nodded reluctantly.
"Mrs. Vance is correct."
Arthur clenched his jaw.
"Continue."
Michael searched through every available camera.
Kitchen.
Library.
Garden.
Garage.
Eventually, another clip appeared.
The mysterious woman crossed the east courtyard.
For the first time...
She looked directly toward a camera.
Arthur's heartbeat quickened.
"Pause."
The image froze.
Her sunglasses reflected the afternoon sunlight.
The hat still hid most of her features.
But one small detail caught Arthur's attention.
Around her neck hung an elegant emerald brooch shaped like a swan.
His face darkened.
"I've seen that before."
Eleanor immediately looked away.
Just for a second.
Detective Harris noticed.
"So have you, Mrs. Vance?"
She answered calmly.
"It's a common design."
Arthur wasn't convinced.
"My grandmother owned one exactly like it."
Eleanor folded her arms.
"Many women do."
Michael continued reviewing footage.
Suddenly another warning appeared.
FILE CORRUPTED
Several minutes of recording disappeared into static.
"What happened?" Arthur asked.
Michael typed rapidly.
"The file's been overwritten."
"Accidentally?"
Michael slowly looked up.
"No."
"It was manually deleted."
Silence.
Detective Harris stepped closer.
"Can you tell when?"
Michael checked the system log.
"This afternoon."
"After the necklace was discovered."
Arthur's voice became cold.
"So someone knew exactly which footage mattered."
Detective Harris removed his notebook.
"Mr. Vance..."
"Based on what we've seen..."
"...I cannot conclude Miss Clara planted the necklace."
Arthur nodded.
"Then release her."
The detective hesitated.
"The necklace was still recovered from her locker."
Arthur's shoulders sank.
"I know."
"Legally, I can't dismiss the charge yet."
Clara would still have to accompany the police while the investigation continued.
As officers prepared to escort Clara outside, Arthur walked toward her.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him through tear-filled eyes.
"You don't have to apologize."
"I failed to protect you."
Clara shook her head gently.
"No."
"You believed me."
"That's enough."
Arthur swallowed hard.
"It isn't."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I promise you."
"I'll find whoever did this."
Clara managed a faint smile despite the handcuffs.
"I believe you."
Those four words only deepened Arthur's guilt.
The police vehicle slowly drove away from the estate.
Leo and Toby stood at the front steps, crying as Clara looked back through the window.
Arthur wrapped his arms around both boys.
"I'll bring her home."
Leo wiped his eyes.
"Promise?"
Arthur looked toward the mansion behind them.
Someone inside those walls had betrayed an innocent woman.
And that betrayal had shattered his children's hearts.
"I promise."
Late that night...
The estate was finally quiet.
Michael remained alone in the security room, continuing to search through damaged files.
Suddenly...
One folder appeared that hadn't been there before.
Its name contained no words.
Only today's date.
He frowned.
"I don't remember seeing this."
He opened it.
Inside was a single encrypted video.
Length:
12 minutes, 17 seconds.
The exact twelve minutes that had mysteriously disappeared.
Before he could click Play—
The lights went out.
The room fell into complete darkness.
A second later...
May you like
Someone quietly turned the doorknob behind him.
