CHAPTER 10

CHAPTER 10

The Real Motive

The words remained suspended between them.

Your mother has another child.

Arthur stared at Clara as if the entire world had shifted beneath his feet.

Another child.

Another family secret.

Another lie.

For years, he believed he knew everything about the Vance family.

The company.

The wealth.

The history.

The people.

But suddenly, he realized he had only known the version of reality that Eleanor allowed him to see.

"Another child?"

His voice was barely audible.

Clara nodded slowly.

"Emily found documents."

"When?"

"The night before she died."

Arthur's hands tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Clara looked down.

"Because Emily asked me not to."

"She said if Eleanor knew she had the documents, she would destroy everything."

Arthur closed his eyes.

A painful thought entered his mind.

Emily had died protecting the truth.

And Clara had spent three years protecting Emily's last wish.

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"Miss Bennett, did Emily tell you the child's name?"

Clara shook her head.

"No."

"Did she tell you where the child was?"

"No."

"Anything?"

Clara hesitated.

Then she remembered.

"There was one thing."

Arthur immediately looked at her.

"What?"

"Emily said..."

Clara swallowed.

"She said Eleanor had spent her entire life trying to erase one person from the Vance family."

Silence.

Back at the Vance estate, Eleanor sat alone in the library.

The room was dark.

The curtains were closed.

For the first time, the woman who had controlled everything looked completely defeated.

Her phone rang.

Victor Hayes.

She answered.

"Tell me you handled it."

A long pause.

Eleanor's expression changed.

"What do you mean, he knows?"

Victor's voice was nervous.

"Arthur knows about the audio."

Eleanor stood.

"Impossible."

"He has the recording."

Her hand tightened around the phone.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"If Arthur finds out the entire truth..."

She stopped.

Victor finished the sentence.

"...the Vance family will collapse."

Arthur returned home that evening.

But this time, he did not walk through the mansion as a son.

He walked through it as an investigator.

Every painting.

Every locked drawer.

Every family portrait.

Everything had become evidence.

Ethan followed him.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Arthur looked toward the staircase.

"I spent my whole life believing this house was built on love."

He paused.

"Now I need to know what it was really built on."

They started with Eleanor's private records.

Bank accounts.

Old property files.

Medical documents.

Anything hidden.

After hours of searching, Ethan discovered something.

A sealed adoption record.

Arthur looked at the screen.

"Open it."

Ethan hesitated.

"Arthur..."

"Open it."

The file appeared.

A name.

A date.

A location.

Arthur read the information.

Then he went completely still.

"What?"

Ethan looked concerned.

"Who is it?"

Arthur whispered:

"Daniel."

The name meant nothing.

Until Arthur saw the birth record.

Mother:

Eleanor Vance

Father:

Unknown

Arthur sat down.

His mother had a son.

A son nobody knew existed.

Not him.

Not his father.

Not even Emily.

"Why would she hide him?"

Ethan searched deeper.

Then another document appeared.

A financial agreement.

Signed twenty-eight years earlier.

Arthur read it.

His face changed.

"What?"

Ethan looked at the screen.

"The Vance family paid someone."

"Who?"

"Daniel's mother."

Arthur frowned.

"Why?"

Ethan opened another page.

The answer was devastating.

Confidential settlement regarding inheritance dispute.

Arthur felt sick.

His mother didn't just hide a child.

She erased him.

Meanwhile, Eleanor visited Victor.

The meeting took place in an abandoned office building outside the city.

"You should have destroyed everything years ago."

Victor looked exhausted.

"I tried."

"You failed."

"Because Emily was smarter than we thought."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Emily always thought kindness could fix everything."

Victor looked at her.

"Maybe she was right."

Eleanor stared.

"Don't."

"You know what happened."

"I did what I had to do."

Victor lowered his voice.

"You abandoned your own son."

Eleanor looked away.

"I protected my family."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"You protected your inheritance."

The accusation hit harder than expected.

At the detention center, Clara finally told Arthur the part she had kept hidden.

"There was another reason Emily trusted me."

Arthur looked at her.

"What reason?"

"Because Daniel..."

She paused.

"Daniel knew me."

Arthur frowned.

"How?"

Clara looked nervous.

"My grandmother knew him."

Arthur leaned forward.

"What does that mean?"

Clara took a deep breath.

"Daniel was the reason my grandmother left the Vance family years ago."

The pieces began falling into place.

Margaret Bennett.

The former employee.

The secret settlement.

The hidden son.

The missing necklace.

The black box.

Everything connected.

That night, Arthur confronted Eleanor again.

She was waiting for him.

"You know."

It wasn't a question.

Arthur placed the adoption record on the table.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Eleanor looked at the document.

For the first time...

She looked ashamed.

"I was young."

Arthur laughed bitterly.

"That is your explanation?"

"I made one mistake."

"One?"

He stepped closer.

"You abandoned your child."

"You destroyed Clara."

"You lied to Emily."

"How many mistakes does it take before someone admits they are cruel?"

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"I was trying to protect you."

Arthur shook his head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Protect me from what?"

"From the truth?"

Eleanor finally broke.

"You don't understand what Daniel would have done."

Arthur froze.

"What?"

She looked terrified.

"He hated this family."

"Because of what you did."

The confession came slowly.

Daniel wasn't a forgotten mistake.

He was someone Eleanor feared.

Someone who knew everything.

"Where is he?"

Arthur asked.

Eleanor said nothing.

"Where is Daniel?"

Still silence.

Arthur slammed his hand on the table.

"Mother!"

Eleanor whispered:

"He disappeared."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

Arthur froze.

The same year Emily died.

At that moment, Ethan called.

Arthur answered.

"Arthur..."

His voice sounded strange.

"What?"

"We found something."

Arthur listened.

"Your mother's phone records."

"And?"

"She contacted someone the night Emily died."

Arthur's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Ethan paused.

Then said:

"The number belongs to Daniel Vance."

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

She was crying silently.

Not from guilt.

From fear.

Because the secret she buried for twenty-eight years...

Had finally returned.

And this time...

May you like

It wanted the truth.
