CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
The Grandmother's Secret
The video froze on the screen.
Ethan Brooks stared at the paused image, his fingers resting motionless above the keyboard.
For years, he had worked with confidential information.
Corporate scandals.
Political secrets.
Family betrayals hidden behind expensive walls.
He thought he had seen every kind of deception.
But this was different.
Because the person inside that room wasn't a stranger.
It was someone Arthur trusted.
Someone who sat at his dinner table.
Someone who kissed his grandchildren goodnight.
Ethan slowly reached for his phone.
He called Arthur.
The phone rang twice before Arthur answered.
"Ethan?"
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Did you open the file?"
There was a pause.
Then Ethan said quietly,
"Yes."
Arthur immediately stood.
"And?"
Another pause.
"Eleanor."
The room went completely silent.
Arthur looked toward the hallway.
"Say that again."
"The person who entered Clara's room..."
Ethan's voice lowered.
"It was your mother."
Arthur didn't speak.
For several seconds, he simply stood there.
His mind refused to accept what his ears had heard.
"No."
It wasn't denial.
It was disbelief.
"My mother wouldn't..."
Ethan interrupted gently.
"Arthur, I watched the footage."
"She entered Clara's room."
"She opened the locker."
"And she placed the necklace inside."
Arthur closed his eyes.
The image of Eleanor standing beside the staircase flashed through his mind.
Her cold expression.
Her certainty.
Her immediate accusation.
All of it.
Suddenly, it felt different.
Not like confidence.
Like preparation.
"Send me the footage."
"I already did."
Arthur looked at his computer.
A notification appeared.
Encrypted Video Received
His hands hovered over the keyboard.
For a moment, he couldn't press play.
Because watching it meant accepting something he wasn't ready to accept.
His mother had not made a mistake.
She had made a choice.
Finally...
He clicked.
The video began.
The hallway outside Clara's room appeared.
A few seconds later—
Eleanor entered.
No disguise.
No hesitation.
No fear.
She moved through the room like someone who believed she had every right to be there.
She opened Clara's locker.
Removed a small velvet box.
And placed the diamond necklace inside.
Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.
Almost as if she knew it existed.
Almost as if she wanted someone to see.
Arthur felt sick.
"Why?"
The question escaped his lips.
Not angry.
Just broken.
Ethan remained silent on the phone.
Finally he said,
"Arthur."
"There is something else."
Arthur looked at the screen.
"What?"
"The file wasn't just deleted."
"It was modified."
"Someone tried to make it appear like Clara accessed the locker."
Arthur's expression hardened.
"So she didn't just frame her."
"No."
Ethan's voice became serious.
"She planned it."
Meanwhile, inside the Vance estate...
Eleanor sat in her private sitting room.
She looked completely calm.
A newspaper rested on her lap.
The headline read:
VANCE FAMILY MAID ARRESTED FOR JEWELRY THEFT
She smiled faintly.
Until her phone rang.
She answered without looking.
"Yes?"
The voice on the other end was nervous.
"Mrs. Vance..."
"Arthur knows."
The smile disappeared.
"What?"
"He hired Ethan Brooks."
Eleanor stood immediately.
"Impossible."
"He decrypted the footage."
For the first time that day...
Eleanor looked afraid.
"How much did he see?"
"Everything."
The call ended.
Eleanor slowly walked toward the fireplace.
Above it hung a portrait of the Vance family.
Her husband.
Her son.
Her grandchildren.
A perfect image.
A perfect lie.
She touched the frame gently.
"I did what I had to do."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I protected this family."
Arthur arrived home twenty minutes later.
He didn't announce himself.
He didn't call for his mother.
He simply walked through the mansion.
Every room held memories.
The dining room where Clara helped Leo finish homework.
The kitchen where Toby learned to bake cookies.
The garden where Emily used to sit with the children.
And now...
The same house where his own mother had destroyed the person keeping them together.
He found Eleanor in the library.
She didn't look surprised.
"You saw it."
Arthur stopped.
The fact that she already knew made everything worse.
"Why?"
One word.
But it carried years of disappointment.
Eleanor closed her book.
"Because someone had to."
Arthur stared at her.
"Had to?"
"Yes."
She stood.
"You were blind."
"To what?"
"To her."
Eleanor's voice sharpened.
"That maid was becoming too important."
Arthur couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"She cared for my children."
"She manipulated you."
"No."
Arthur's answer came instantly.
"She loved them."
Eleanor laughed coldly.
"Love?"
"Do you really think a woman like that belongs in this family?"
There it was.
The truth hidden beneath everything.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Class.
Pride.
Control.
Arthur stepped closer.
"You framed an innocent woman because you thought she wasn't good enough?"
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"I saved you from ruining your life."
"You lost your wife."
"Do you think I wanted you alone forever?"
Arthur looked shocked.
"My wife?"
Eleanor's eyes flashed.
"Emily filled your head with emotions."
"She trusted Clara."
"She was wrong."
Arthur froze.
"What did you say?"
Eleanor realized her mistake too late.
Arthur stepped closer.
"How do you know Emily trusted Clara?"
Silence.
The question hung between them.
Eleanor looked away.
Arthur's voice lowered.
"You knew."
"You knew about Emily's message."
Her silence answered everything.
That night, Arthur searched every file belonging to his late wife.
He found the email again.
Then he noticed something.
There was an attachment.
A video file.
One he had never opened.
The title:
For Arthur, if Clara ever needs protection.
His hands trembled.
He clicked.
Emily appeared on the screen.
She looked tired.
But she was smiling.
"Arthur..."
"If you're watching this, something happened."
His heart tightened.
Emily continued:
"I know you trust your mother."
"But please listen carefully."
"Not everyone who loves you knows how to love you correctly."
Arthur stared.
"I need you to protect Clara."
"Because Eleanor will never forgive her for something that isn't her fault."
Arthur stopped breathing.
"What?"
Emily continued.
"Years ago, Eleanor made a decision that hurt someone."
"And Clara knows the truth."
The video suddenly glitched.
Then stopped.
Arthur stared at the screen.
A new question appeared.
A deeper one.
What secret did Clara know?
And why had Eleanor risked everything to silence her?
Across town, Eleanor packed a suitcase.
Not because she planned to run.
Because she planned to fight.
She opened a hidden compartment beneath her jewelry cabinet.
Inside was an old photograph.
A young Eleanor.
A younger Emily.
And another woman standing between them.
A woman Arthur had never seen.
Eleanor touched the photograph.
"I tried to bury this once."
Her eyes hardened.
"Now I'll have to destroy anyone who digs it up."
At the detention center, Clara woke suddenly in the middle of the night.
She didn't know why.
She only felt that something had changed.
The next morning, Arthur would return.
But this time...
He wouldn't come with apologies.
May you like
He would come with the truth.
