CHAPTER 2: WHAT THE BALLROOM DIDN’T KNOW

CHAPTER 2: WHAT THE BALLROOM DIDN’T KNOW

Back at the wedding, the champagne kept flowing.

Eleanor Pierce laughed louder than necessary.

Brooke leaned comfortably into her assigned place at the family table like she belonged there more than I ever had.

Nathan stood frozen between them.

Trying to fix what he had already allowed.

But the truth about moments like that is simple:

They don’t break because of what happens in them.

They break because of everything that led there.

Eleanor’s voice echoed in my memory.

We thought Brooke should spend the evening with the people who actually make Nathan happy.

I exhaled slowly.

Then opened the gift box.

Inside was a second layer.

A sealed envelope.

Marked:

DO NOT OPEN UNLESS CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE MET

I smiled faintly.

Those conditions had just walked into a ballroom wearing red.

I turned the envelope over.

And pressed my thumb to the biometric seal.

It lit up green.

Approved.

Of course it was.

Because I had never intended this to be emotional.

It was procedural.

Inside was a legal trigger packet:

• Asset tracing authorization
• Private financial audit request
• Third-party relationship disclosure clause
• Emergency reputational containment order

All signed in advance.

All waiting for the moment Nathan stopped being someone I could trust.

And started being someone I needed to document.
