CHAPTER 3: ELEVEN CALLS TOO LATE

CHAPTER 3: ELEVEN CALLS TOO LATE
Nathan’s twelfth call came through.
I let it ring once.
Then answered.
Not with emotion.
With silence.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then his voice broke through.
“Mara… where are you?”
Still trying to locate me.
Not what he had done.
Not what he had allowed.
Just me.
“I left,” I said calmly.
A pause.
“Mara, it was just seating. My mother—”
“It wasn’t just seating,” I interrupted.
Silence.
Because he knew that was true.
I continued.
“You didn’t correct it.”
Another pause.
“I didn’t want to cause a scene at her wedding.”
I almost laughed.
Softly.
Almost.
“That’s interesting,” I said.
Because I hadn’t caused a scene either.
And somehow, only one of us had left.
Nathan exhaled sharply.
“She’s just a guest, Mara. You’re overreacting.”
That word again.
Overreacting.
The family’s favorite way of translating boundaries into inconvenience.
I looked at the gift box one last time.
Then closed it.
Carefully.
“I’m not discussing Brooke,” I said.
“Then what are you doing?”
I picked up the envelope.
And spoke clearly.
“I’m protecting myself.”
A pause.
Then his voice lowered.
“…from what?”
From him.
From them.
From the version of me they thought was permanent.
But I didn’t say that.
Instead I said:
May you like
“You’ll understand soon.”
And I ended the call.
