CHAPTER 4: THE MORNING AFTER THE WEDDING

CHAPTER 4: THE MORNING AFTER THE WEDDING
By morning, everything had already begun shifting.
Not loudly.
Not visibly.
Quietly.
Like pressure building beneath glass.
My attorney’s first message arrived at 6:14 a.m.
“Financial institutions have acknowledged the freeze request. Corporate review initiated.”
At 6:27 a.m.
“Third-party investigation into Pierce family holdings is now active.”
At 6:41 a.m.
A final message:
“They’ve requested a response from Nathan.”
I set my phone down.
Then finally allowed myself to breathe.
Not relief.
Not revenge.
Something cleaner.
Distance.
Nathan called again.
And again.
And again.
But I didn’t answer anymore.
Because answering would have implied there was still a version of this story where I was inside it.
And I had already stepped out.
Outside my window, Chicago was waking up.
Cars moving.
People rushing.
Lives continuing.
Unaware that somewhere inside a glass ballroom, a family was slowly realizing something uncomfortable:
The person they had treated as optional
May you like
had been the only reason everything was still standing.
And now she was gone.
