CHAPTER 11 — THE EMPIRE BEHIND THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 11 — THE EMPIRE BEHIND THE EMPIRE

The lights went out.

Not one by one.

All at once.

Darkness swallowed the vault.

Then I heard the voice again.

“Sister?”

I couldn't move.

My mother's fingers tightened around my wrist.

“Vivian…”

“I heard him.”

“I know.”

“That was a child.”

“I know.”

A small sound came from the tunnel.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Barely audible.

One.

Two.

Three.

Someone was walking toward us.

I raised my phone.

The flashlight flickered.

Nothing.

Then a shape appeared at the far end of the corridor.

A boy.

Maybe ten years old.

Bare feet.

Dark clothes.

A scar above his eyebrow.

He stopped beneath the emergency light.

And looked directly at me.

His eyes were mine.

My mother's eyes.

My family's eyes.

I couldn't breathe.

“Who are you?”

The boy didn't answer.

He looked at Sophie.

Then back at me.

“You came.”

My voice broke.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“I knew you would.”

My mother collapsed against the wall.

“No…”

The boy looked at her.

“Hello, Mom.”

My mother's face turned white.

I stared at her.

“Mom?”

She couldn't speak.

The boy took another step forward.

“My name is Lucas.”

My heart stopped.

“Lucas?”

He nodded.

“Lucas Whitmore.”

I looked at my mother.

“You said he was taken.”

“He was.”

“You said he died.”

“I thought…”

“You knew.”

She began crying.

“I thought he was dead.”

Lucas looked at her.

“They told you that.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the darkness behind him.

“Marcus.”

I stepped closer.

“Lucas.”

He studied my face.

“You're really my sister.”

“Yes.”

“You look different.”

I almost laughed.

“So do you.”

He smiled.

For a moment, the war disappeared.

There was only a boy and his sister meeting for the first time.

Then he asked:

“Where's Ethan?”

My smile vanished.

“He was shot.”

Lucas's face changed.

“Is he dead?”

“I don't know.”

He looked at the tunnel.

“He isn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Marcus took him.”

My mother whispered:

“Why?”

Lucas looked at her.

“Because Ethan failed.”

I felt cold.

“Failed at what?”

Lucas answered:

“Killing you.”

The boy's words hung in the air.

I looked at him.

“You know everything?”

“No.”

“What do you know?”

“Enough.”

“Then tell me.”

Lucas hesitated.

“Marcus doesn't control the Council.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He never did.”

“Then who does?”

Lucas looked at the vault.

“The empire behind the empire.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

He pointed toward the wall.

“The Council controls the visible world.”

“And behind them?”

“The people who own the Council.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

Lucas whispered:

“The Founders.”

My mother covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“You know them.”

She shook her head.

“I know the name.”

“Who are they?”

“They existed before the Council.”

“How long?”

“More than a hundred years.”

“Why have I never heard of them?”

“Because nobody is supposed to.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“They control the banks.”

I looked at him.

“The major banks?”

“All of them.”

“The companies?”

“Yes.”

“The Council?”

“Yes.”

“The governments?”

He hesitated.

“Not directly.”

“Then who?”

“The Founders don't control governments.”

He looked at me.

“They control the people who control governments.”

My stomach tightened.

“And the Meridian Trust?”

Lucas smiled.

“The Trust was created to stop them.”

I stared.

“Then why did it become part of their system?”

“Because they stole it.”

I looked at the documents.

“When?”

“Thirty years ago.”

“Who stole it?”

Lucas answered:

“Your grandfather.”

I froze.

“Which one?”

Lucas pointed toward the portrait hanging above the vault.

A man I had never seen before.

His face was old.

His eyes were cold.

Beneath the portrait:

EDWARD WHITMORE.

My grandfather.

The original heir.

The man who had supposedly died before I was born.

I stared.

“He stole the Trust?”

Lucas nodded.

“Then why create it?”

“He didn't.”

“Who did?”

Lucas whispered:

“Elizabeth.”

I looked at the portrait.

“Elizabeth Whitmore.”

“The first heir.”

“Yes.”

“She created the Trust.”

“Yes.”

“To protect the family.”

“No.”

I frowned.

“To destroy the Founders.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She discovered what they were doing.”

“What were they doing?”

Lucas looked toward the vault doors.

“Buying people.”

“That isn't new.”

“Not like this.”

He pointed at the old ledger.

“They bought judges.”

I nodded.

“Politicians.”

“Yes.”

“Companies.”

“Yes.”

“Families.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Lucas's voice dropped.

“They bought identities.”

I felt cold.

“Whose?”

“Everyone.”

He walked toward the wall.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside were hundreds of passports.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

Adoption records.

Marriage records.

Names.

Faces.

Lives.

Entire families had been rewritten.

Lucas pulled out a file.

“This is your mother's.”

I took it.

The name on the document wasn't Cross.

It wasn't Whitmore.

It wasn't Vale.

It was:

ELENA MARLOWE.

I stared.

“That's not my mother.”

“It was her first identity.”

“Why?”

“To hide her from the Founders.”

“Who created it?”

“Edward.”

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he hide his own daughter?”

“Because she knew too much.”

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“What did you know?”

She whispered:

“The Founders had infiltrated our family.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“Your grandmother.”

My heart stopped.

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“She's one of them?”

My mother nodded.

“She's not just one of them.”

She swallowed.

“She is one of the Founders.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

Lucas nodded.

“She was the youngest Founder.”

“How old is she?”

“Older than you think.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“She changed identities.”

“How?”

“The Founders don't age normally.”

I stared.

“What?”

“They use a treatment.”

My mother looked at Lucas.

“Don't tell her that.”

“Why?”

“Because she isn't ready.”

I turned toward her.

“I've spent my entire life not being ready.”

I stepped closer.

“I'm ready now.”

She closed her eyes.

“The Founders discovered a way to slow cellular aging.”

My stomach turned.

“How?”

“Through blood.”

I looked at Sophie.

“No.”

“Your bloodline is valuable.”

“Why?”

“Because your family carries a rare genetic trait.”

Lucas nodded.

“The same trait that lets the Trust recognize you.”

I understood.

“The Trust isn't recognizing wealth.”

“No.”

“It's recognizing blood.”

“Yes.”

“And the Founders want that blood.”

Lucas looked at Sophie.

“They want hers.”

I grabbed his shoulders.

“How do you know?”

“Because I was there.”

“Where?”

“When they tested me.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Lucas pulled back his sleeve.

A long scar ran along his arm.

“They took my blood for years.”

I stared.

“Who?”

“The Founders.”

“Marcus?”

“Marcus worked for them.”

“And Ethan?”

“Ethan was trained by them.”

“Richard?”

“Used by them.”

“Celeste?”

“Controlled by them.”

“Nathan?”

“Afraid of them.”

“Gabriel?”

“Ran from them.”

I swallowed.

“And my mother?”

Lucas looked at her.

“She tried to expose them.”

I turned.

“That's why you disappeared.”

My mother nodded.

“Yes.”

“And they took Lucas.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

“They couldn't find you.”

I suddenly remembered.

The hidden names.

The false identities.

The endless lies.

All of it had one purpose.

Hide me.

A phone began ringing.

Everyone froze.

It was coming from the old desk.

I walked toward it.

The screen showed one word.

UNKNOWN.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice whispered:

“Vivienne.”

I knew it immediately.

Margaret.

“Where is my daughter?”

“She is safe.”

“You took her.”

“No.”

“You kidnapped Sophie.”

“She belongs to the bloodline.”

“She belongs to me.”

Margaret laughed.

“Do you know how many people have said that?”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

“Where is Ethan?”

A pause.

“Alive.”

“Give him to me.”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because he has something you need.”

“What?”

“The location of the Founders' vault.”

I froze.

“Where is it?”

“You tell me first.”

“Tell you what?”

“Where the Trust is.”

I looked at Lucas.

He shook his head.

I smiled.

“You already know.”

Margaret went silent.

“You just don't know where I hid it.”

“You think you're clever.”

“No.”

I looked at Sophie.

“I think I'm your worst mistake.”

Margaret's voice became cold.

“You sound like Elizabeth.”

“Maybe that's why you're afraid.”

Silence.

Then Margaret whispered:

“You don't understand who you're fighting.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“You're fighting people who built the world.”

I smiled.

“Then I'll start by taking it apart.”

The call ended.

Lucas looked at me.

“She'll come.”

“I know.”

“She's not afraid of you.”

“She should be.”

“She isn't.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows what happens when the Trust fully awakens.”

I frowned.

“What happens?”

Lucas looked toward Sophie.

“She becomes the most powerful person alive.”

I stared at my daughter.

“She is eight.”

“That doesn't matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“To the Trust, she's the successor.”

“Then I'll protect her.”

Lucas nodded.

“That is what Elizabeth said.”

I looked at him.

“What happened to Elizabeth?”

He didn't answer.

“Lucas.”

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“After creating the Trust.”

“Where?”

“No one knows.”

I looked at the portrait.

“What if she's alive?”

Lucas's face changed.

“She might be.”

A deep mechanical sound echoed beneath the vault.

Everyone froze.

The floor began vibrating.

The family tree lit up.

One name appeared.

ELIZABETH WHITMORE.

Then another.

STATUS: ACTIVE.

My mother gasped.

“No.”

Lucas stared.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“The system says she's alive.”

I looked at the screen.

“Then where is she?”

A hidden compartment opened beneath the floor.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

I picked it up.

The handwriting was old.

Elegant.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

If you're reading this, Margaret has failed.

My heart raced.

Another sentence.

The Founders are coming for Sophie.

Then:

Do not take her to the Whitmore estate.

I looked at the vault.

We were already there.

Then I read the final line.

Take her to the city beneath the city.

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas looked at the letter.

His face went pale.

“The Underground.”

“What is it?”

“The place where the Founders keep everything.”

“Everything?”

“Money.”

“Secrets.”

“People.”

“Names.”

“Evidence.”

I looked at him.

“And Ethan?”

Lucas nodded.

“He'll be there.”

I folded the letter.

“Then that's where we're going.”

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Vivian, no.”

“Mom.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand my brother is alive.”

“Yes.”

“And Sophie is being hunted.”

“Yes.”

“And the people behind this are hiding beneath the city.”

“Yes.”

“Then I'm going.”

My mother stared at me.

“You sound like your grandmother.”

I looked at her.

“Which one?”

She didn't answer.

We left the vault through a hidden passage.

For the first time in hours, there were no guards.

No attackers.

No gunfire.

Only silence.

Lucas walked beside me.

Sophie held my hand.

My mother followed.

Adrian came behind us.

I looked at him.

“You're coming?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I owe you the truth.”

“What truth?”

He hesitated.

“I knew about the Underground.”

I stopped.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Celeste threatened me.”

“With what?”

“My life.”

I stared.

“And you chose to protect yourself.”

“Yes.”

“At least you're honest.”

He looked down.

“I wasn't always.”

I continued walking.

“I know.”

At the end of the tunnel was an old elevator.

Lucas entered a code.

The doors opened.

We stepped inside.

The elevator descended.

One floor.

Two.

Ten.

Twenty.

The numbers kept changing.

Then they disappeared.

The elevator continued downward.

Sophie looked at me.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Where are we going?”

I kissed her forehead.

“To find your uncle.”

She smiled.

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“Is he nice?”

I looked at Lucas.

He smiled.

“He is.”

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

I stepped out.

And froze.

A city existed beneath the city.

Thousands of people moved through enormous underground streets.

Buildings rose from the darkness.

Banks.

Hotels.

Courthouses.

Corporate offices.

Even a massive train station.

It was a hidden metropolis.

An entire civilization beneath the world everyone knew.

Lucas whispered:

“Welcome to the Empire Behind the Empire.”

I stared.

“How long has this existed?”

“Over a century.”

“And nobody knows?”

“They do.”

“Who?”

“The Founders.”

I looked at the city.

People were watching us.

Some recognized Lucas.

Some recognized me.

Then suddenly...

every screen in the underground city turned on.

My face appeared.

Then Sophie's.

A message appeared:

THE EIGHTH HEIR HAS ARRIVED.

The crowd went silent.

Then another message:

KILL THE MOTHER.

I grabbed Sophie.

Weapons appeared throughout the streets.

Lucas pulled his gun.

Adrian stepped forward.

My mother screamed:

“RUN!”

We turned.

And behind us stood Ethan.

Alive.

Blood still stained his shirt.

He looked at me.

Then at Sophie.

Then at Lucas.

His expression was unreadable.

I stepped toward him.

“Ethan.”

He raised his weapon.

Lucas aimed at him.

“Don't.”

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

He looked at Sophie.

Then whispered:

“They found the First Heir.”

I frowned.

“Who?”

He looked upward.

Every screen went black.

A single message appeared.

ELIZABETH WHITMORE IS HERE.

May you like

And then the entire underground city...

bowed.
