CHAPTER 13 — THE GIRL WHO OWNED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 13 — THE GIRL WHO OWNED EVERYTHING

The words stayed with me long after the call ended.

She wasn't born to inherit the empire.

She was born to destroy it.

I stared at the dead phone screen.

Sophie stood beside me, holding my hand.

Lucas was still looking at the monitor.

My mother couldn't stop shaking.

And Elizabeth...

Elizabeth looked like she had seen a ghost.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.”

She didn't answer.

“You knew Samuel was alive.”

Silence.

“You knew where he was.”

Still nothing.

“You knew what he was capable of.”

Elizabeth finally looked at me.

“Yes.”

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me everything.”

Her eyes moved toward Sophie.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because this room is no longer secure.”

A deep mechanical rumble answered her.

The laboratory lights flickered.

Then every screen turned on.

Samuel appeared.

His face was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Hello again.”

I stepped toward the nearest monitor.

“Where is my daughter?”

He smiled.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Exactly where she needs to be.”

My heart pounded.

“You took her?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Samuel's expression changed.

“Your family.”

I froze.

“What?”

“You're still asking the wrong question, Vivian.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Why did they need Sophie?”

I looked at Elizabeth.

She looked away.

Samuel continued.

“Because Sophie is not merely the heir.”

He paused.

“She is the owner.”

The screen changed.

A massive digital map appeared.

Countries.

Cities.

Companies.

Banks.

Hotels.

Airlines.

Energy companies.

Media networks.

Insurance firms.

Technology corporations.

One by one, ownership percentages appeared beside them.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Samuel answered:

“The Meridian network.”

“That can't be real.”

“It is.”

“The Trust doesn't own all of that.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Sophie does.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“How?”

“Your grandmother built the system.”

Elizabeth whispered:

“I didn't build it.”

Samuel laughed.

“You inherited it.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

“You said the Trust was created to destroy the Founders.”

“It was.”

“Then why does it own half the world?”

“Because the Founders stole control of it.”

Samuel nodded.

“Exactly.”

I stared at the screen.

The numbers continued climbing.

Every major asset.

Every hidden holding company.

Every offshore trust.

Every secret subsidiary.

Every property.

Every account.

All connected.

All tracing back to one structure.

The Meridian Trust.

And at the center...

one name.

SOPHIE WHITMORE.

I couldn't speak.

My eight-year-old daughter stood beside me.

She had no idea what she supposedly owned.

She was still worried about whether she had left her favorite stuffed rabbit at home.

I knelt.

“Sophie.”

“Yes, Mommy?”

“Do you know what an owner is?”

She thought for a moment.

“Someone who has something?”

I smiled despite everything.

“Sometimes.”

Samuel watched from the screen.

Sophie looked up.

“Do I own something?”

I looked at the map.

“Apparently.”

“How much?”

I almost laughed.

“I don't know.”

Samuel answered:

“Everything.”

Sophie frowned.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Can I have ice cream?”

The room went silent.

Lucas laughed.

My mother covered her mouth.

Even Elizabeth smiled.

For the first time in hours, the fear broke.

I hugged Sophie.

“Yes.”

“Even if I own everything?”

“Especially then.”

Samuel's expression softened.

“That's why she's dangerous.”

I stood.

“She isn't dangerous.”

“She could destroy the world.”

“She could also save it.”

Samuel smiled.

“That's what I was hoping you'd say.”

The laboratory doors suddenly opened.

Security officers rushed inside.

I grabbed Sophie.

Lucas raised his weapon.

Elizabeth stepped forward.

“Lower your weapons.”

The guards obeyed immediately.

I stared.

“Who are they?”

“Mine.”

I frowned.

“You have guards?”

“I have an army.”

Samuel's voice came through the speakers.

“Not anymore.”

The guards looked at each other.

Their weapons powered down.

Every screen changed.

COMMAND TRANSFERRED.

Elizabeth's face went pale.

“No.”

Samuel appeared again.

“I warned you.”

“You cannot control the Founders.”

“I don't.”

He smiled.

“I control the system they built.”

The doors locked.

The floor beneath us opened.

Everyone screamed.

We dropped several feet before a platform caught us.

Then the room began descending.

Deeper.

Far deeper.

The walls became metallic.

The air became colder.

Lucas grabbed my shoulder.

“What's happening?”

Samuel answered:

“I'm bringing you home.”

“What home?”

“The original headquarters.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

She was terrified.

“You've been here before.”

She nodded.

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“What happened?”

“I betrayed them.”

“Why?”

“To save your mother.”

“And Samuel?”

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“I failed.”

The platform stopped.

The doors opened.

We entered an enormous chamber.

At the center was a circular table.

Around it sat twelve empty chairs.

Above them hung a symbol.

A black crown.

Beneath it:

THE FIRST EMPIRE.

I walked closer.

“What is this?”

Samuel's voice came from the speakers.

“This is where the Founders made decisions.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Wars.

Markets.

Elections.

Corporate mergers.

Bank failures.

Political scandals.

The files covered entire walls.

I picked one up.

A financial collapse.

Another.

A political assassination.

Another.

A corporate takeover.

Another.

A celebrity scandal.

Another.

All connected.

All manipulated.

All signed by the same organization.

The Founders.

My stomach turned.

“They controlled all of this.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Power.”

“And money.”

“No.”

Samuel's voice became colder.

“Money was never the goal.”

“Then what was?”

“Predictability.”

I frowned.

“They wanted a world they could predict.”

“And control.”

“Yes.”

I looked around.

“And Sophie threatens that.”

“No.”

Samuel paused.

“She ends it.”

A door opened.

Samuel walked into the chamber.

For the first time, I saw him in person.

He looked exactly like me.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same expression when angry.

Lucas stared.

“You're alive.”

Samuel smiled.

“So are you.”

“You're the First Heir.”

“Yes.”

“Why did they hide you?”

Samuel looked at Elizabeth.

“Ask her.”

I turned.

Elizabeth didn't move.

“Tell me.”

She finally spoke.

“Samuel was born with the complete bloodline.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He carries every genetic marker required by the original Trust.”

Lucas looked stunned.

“That's impossible.”

“It was considered impossible.”

I stared at Samuel.

“And me?”

“You carry half.”

“And Lucas?”

“Half.”

“Sophie?”

Samuel looked at her.

“All.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She inherited everything.”

I looked at Sophie.

“From me?”

“From you.”

“And from Samuel?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Lucas.

“And him?”

“No.”

Lucas frowned.

Samuel continued:

“Lucas was the safeguard.”

“The safeguard?”

“He was created to protect the heir.”

Lucas's face went pale.

“Created?”

Samuel nodded.

“Your bloodline was engineered.”

Silence.

“What?”

I looked at my mother.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

“Mom?”

She whispered:

“I didn't know.”

Samuel shook his head.

“You knew enough.”

I felt betrayed again.

Everyone had lied.

Everyone.

My family.

My husband.

My grandmother.

My father.

My brother.

Even my own mother.

I turned away.

“How many lies are left?”

Samuel approached.

“One.”

“What?”

“The biggest one.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed toward Sophie.

“She doesn't belong to the Trust.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The Trust belongs to her.”

I didn't understand.

“What's the difference?”

“The Trust can be destroyed.”

“But Sophie can't.”

“Exactly.”

He looked at me.

“The Founders spent generations trying to control the Trust.”

“But?”

“They forgot something.”

“What?”

“The Trust was only a machine.”

“And?”

“Sophie is the key.”

Suddenly every screen went black.

Then one message appeared.

GLOBAL TRANSFER INITIATED.

Samuel looked toward the ceiling.

“They've started.”

“Who?”

“The remaining Founders.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

“What are they doing?”

“Taking control of the assets before Sophie can.”

“Can they?”

“No.”

“Then why are you worried?”

“Because they're willing to burn everything.”

I stared.

“Meaning?”

“They would rather destroy the empire than let you own it.”

I looked at Sophie.

“What do we do?”

Samuel answered:

“Take it first.”

“How?”

He walked toward a central console.

“Her.”

He pointed at Sophie.

I shook my head.

“She doesn't know anything about this.”

“She doesn't need to.”

“What does she need to do?”

“Choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Whether she wants the empire.”

I laughed.

“She doesn't even know what an empire is.”

Samuel knelt beside her.

“Sophie.”

She looked at him.

“Yes?”

“If you could own everything in the world…”

“Can I still go to school?”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“Can I still play with my friends?”

“Yes.”

“Can I still live with Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Then I don't want the empire.”

Samuel looked at me.

I smiled.

“That's the answer.”

He stood.

“Exactly.”

The console activated.

A biometric scanner appeared.

Sophie placed her hand on it.

The entire chamber shook.

Every screen changed.

Every account.

Every company.

Every asset.

One after another.

OWNER VERIFIED.

Then:

SOPHIE WHITMORE.

The system began transferring.

Bank accounts.

Properties.

Companies.

Trusts.

Holdings.

Patents.

Everything.

The world was changing.

And my eight-year-old daughter was sitting beside me asking:

“Mommy, can I have ice cream now?”

I laughed through my tears.

“Yes.”

Then the lights went red.

Samuel looked at the screen.

“What?”

I turned.

“What happened?”

His face changed.

“The Founders have launched the purge.”

“What does that mean?”

“They're destroying their own assets.”

“Why?”

“To prevent Sophie from inheriting them.”

I stared at the map.

Red dots began appearing.

Companies collapsing.

Banks freezing.

Markets destabilizing.

Properties being seized.

“Can we stop it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Samuel looked at me.

“We have to take control of the central server.”

“Where?”

He pointed toward the floor.

“Below us.”

“How far?”

“Three levels.”

I grabbed Sophie's hand.

“Then let's go.”

We descended through another tunnel.

This one was narrower.

Darker.

More dangerous.

Halfway down, gunfire erupted.

Lucas pushed Sophie behind him.

Ethan appeared from the darkness.

Alive.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

I ran toward him.

“Ethan!”

He smiled weakly.

“You're still alive.”

“So are you.”

“I told you I'd find you.”

I hugged him.

Then pulled away.

“You betrayed me.”

His smile disappeared.

“I know.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“I know.”

“You saved me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn't kill my sister.”

I looked at him.

“You're my brother.”

“Yes.”

“I forgive you.”

He stared.

“You shouldn't.”

“I don't care.”

Then I hugged him again.

He began crying.

“I thought I lost you.”

“You almost did.”

“I know.”

Behind us, Samuel cleared his throat.

“We have to go.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You.”

Samuel smiled.

“Me.”

Ethan raised his weapon.

“Don't.”

I stepped between them.

“No.”

Ethan lowered it.

“Why?”

“Because we're family.”

He looked at Samuel.

“So was Marcus.”

I didn't answer.

We continued downward.

At the bottom stood an enormous steel door.

Samuel placed his hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Lucas tried.

Nothing.

Ethan tried.

Nothing.

I tried.

Nothing.

Then Sophie stepped forward.

The door opened instantly.

Inside was the central server.

Hundreds of machines.

Thousands of cables.

A massive digital sphere floating above the floor.

Samuel stared.

“It's still here.”

“What?”

“The original core.”

“What does it do?”

“It controls the empire.”

“Then destroy it.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if we destroy it…”

He looked at Sophie.

“…the entire system collapses.”

“Then what do we do?”

Samuel smiled.

“We change the owner.”

He guided Sophie to the center.

A light appeared.

The system scanned her.

Then:

FINAL SUCCESSION REQUIRED.

Sophie looked at me.

“Mommy?”

I knelt.

“It's okay.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

“What happens if I don't?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why are we here?”

I smiled.

“To make sure you get to choose.”

Sophie thought.

Then she placed her hand on the core.

“I choose Mommy.”

The system froze.

Samuel's eyes widened.

“What?”

Sophie looked at me.

“I don't want everything.”

She looked around.

“I just want Mommy.”

The system began recalculating.

Then a new message appeared.

PRIMARY OWNER: VIVIENNE WHITMORE.

I stared.

“What?”

Samuel laughed.

“She changed the rules.”

“What did she do?”

“She transferred the empire to you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Sophie smiled.

“I told it to give everything to Mommy.”

The entire system activated.

Every screen lit up.

Every account changed.

Every company.

Every asset.

Every secret holding.

Every property.

Everything.

Now under one name.

VIVIENNE WHITMORE.

The girl who had been hunted.

The woman who had been lied to.

The daughter they had erased.

The mother they had underestimated.

I owned everything.

But I didn't feel powerful.

I felt terrified.

Because one final message appeared.

FINAL THREAT DETECTED.

Then:

MARGARET WHITMORE — AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

The server doors slammed shut.

Margaret's voice echoed through the chamber.

“You finally took the empire.”

I looked up.

“Then why do you sound happy?”

She laughed.

“Because, Vivian…”

A countdown appeared.

10:00

“Now I can destroy it.”

The timer began.

Nine minutes.

Fifty-nine seconds.

Nine minutes.

Fifty-eight.

I looked at Sophie.

Then Ethan.

Lucas.

Samuel.

My mother.

We had finally won the empire.

May you like

And now...

we had less than ten minutes to save it.
