CHAPTER 12 — THE NIGHT I TURNED AGAINST MY OWN FAMILY

CHAPTER 12 — THE NIGHT I TURNED AGAINST MY OWN FAMILY

The entire underground city bowed.

Not one person remained standing.

Not the guards.

Not the businessmen.

Not the politicians.

Not even the armed men who had surrounded us.

Every head lowered.

Every weapon dropped.

Every screen displayed the same name.

ELIZABETH WHITMORE.

I couldn't move.

Lucas stood beside me, staring at the screens.

My mother was crying.

Adrian whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Ethan lowered his weapon.

And somewhere beneath the city, an old bell began to ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman's voice filled every street.

“Bring my children home.”

My blood turned cold.

Children.

Plural.

She wasn't talking about Sophie.

She was talking about me.

And Lucas.

I looked at him.

He looked back.

Then a door opened at the end of the street.

An elderly woman stepped through.

White hair.

Black dress.

A silver cane.

She walked slowly.

But the entire city moved aside for her.

I knew that face.

I had seen it in photographs.

In paintings.

In the old family records.

Elizabeth Whitmore.

The First Heir.

The woman who was supposed to have died more than seventy years ago.

She stopped in front of me.

And smiled.

“Vivienne.”

I couldn't speak.

She reached toward my face.

I stepped backward.

“Don't touch me.”

Her hand stopped.

Her smile faded.

“Of course.”

I stared at her.

“You're Elizabeth.”

“Yes.”

“The First Heir.”

“Yes.”

“The creator of the Meridian Trust.”

“Yes.”

“The founder of this city.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

I frowned.

“Then who?”

“The Founders.”

“Who are they?”

Elizabeth looked around.

“Your family.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

She sighed.

“You were never supposed to learn this way.”

“Learn what?”

“That the Founders were never your enemies.”

I laughed bitterly.

“They kidnapped my daughter.”

“No.”

“They took Lucas.”

“No.”

“They used Ethan.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Elizabeth looked directly into my eyes.

“You did.”

The words struck harder than any weapon.

“I did what?”

“You activated the Trust.”

“So?”

“You activated it knowing nothing about its purpose.”

“I activated it to protect my daughter.”

“And in doing so…”

She glanced toward the city.

“You destabilized everything.”

I looked around.

People were still kneeling.

“Why?”

“Because the Trust was never designed to rule.”

“Then what was it designed for?”

“To destroy the empire.”

I frowned.

“What empire?”

Elizabeth pointed upward.

“The world above.”

I stared.

“You mean the governments?”

“No.”

“The corporations?”

“No.”

“The banks?”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“The people who own the people who own them.”

My stomach tightened.

“The Founders.”

“Yes.”

“Then you're one of them.”

“I was.”

“Was?”

She nodded.

“I left.”

“Why?”

“Because I realized what we had become.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“You never told me.”

Elizabeth looked at him.

“You were a child.”

“You let them take me.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Her face tightened.

“I chose the only option that kept you alive.”

“You let them torture me.”

“I watched over you.”

“You watched?”

Lucas laughed.

“They cut me open.”

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“Every time.”

Lucas's voice broke.

“And you did nothing.”

“I did everything.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You did what powerful people always do.”

“What?”

“You called it protection.”

Silence.

Elizabeth looked at him.

Then at me.

“You both have every right to hate me.”

I shook my head.

“You're right.”

Elizabeth looked surprised.

“I do.”

Sophie pulled my sleeve.

“Mommy.”

I knelt beside her.

“What is it?”

“Why is everyone scared of that lady?”

I looked at Elizabeth.

“Because she has hurt people.”

Elizabeth didn't argue.

Sophie looked at her.

“Did you hurt my uncle?”

Elizabeth's eyes softened.

“No.”

“Did you hurt my mommy?”

“No.”

“Then why are you scary?”

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

“Because I made mistakes.”

Sophie thought about it.

“Are you going to make another one?”

Elizabeth looked at me.

“That depends on your mother.”

I stood.

“Then listen carefully.”

Elizabeth waited.

“You stay away from my daughter.”

“I cannot.”

“You can.”

“No.”

Her voice became firm.

“She is the heir.”

“She is a child.”

“She is both.”

“She doesn't belong to your empire.”

“She belongs to history.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“She belongs to herself.”

For the first time, Elizabeth smiled.

“You sound like your mother.”

My mother spoke from behind me.

“That's because I taught her.”

Elizabeth looked at her.

“You betrayed us.”

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me a cage.”

“You were protected.”

“I was controlled.”

“You were alive.”

“My son wasn't.”

Elizabeth looked at Lucas.

Silence.

Then my mother said:

“You don't get to call that protection.”

Elizabeth turned away.

“Come.”

“Where?”

“To the Council chamber.”

“Why?”

“Because your family is waiting.”

I laughed.

“I'm done with family meetings.”

“You're not.”

“What do you mean?”

“The people who ordered your daughter's kidnapping are there.”

I stopped.

“Who?”

“Your grandmother.”

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

Elizabeth paused.

“Yes.”

“Celeste?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian?”

I turned.

Adrian went pale.

Elizabeth continued:

“And Nathan.”

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“You knew they were all here.”

“Yes.”

“And you brought me here.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I laughed.

“Everyone says that.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“I made mistakes.”

“You made a choice.”

“Yes.”

“You chose them.”

“I chose survival.”

“And now?”

He looked at Sophie.

“Now I choose you.”

I shook my head.

“You don't get to choose me after they almost killed my daughter.”

“I know.”

“Then stay out of my way.”

He nodded.

We entered the Council chamber.

It was enormous.

A circular room.

Seven massive chairs.

One empty chair.

And at the center...

a glass table.

Behind it stood Margaret.

Marcus.

Richard.

Celeste.

Nathan.

And three people I had never seen.

I recognized one immediately.

The woman who had appeared in the old photographs beside Elizabeth.

Another was a man with a scar across his face.

The third was an elderly banker.

Elizabeth walked to the empty chair.

“This is the final Council.”

Margaret smiled.

“You finally came.”

Elizabeth looked at her.

“It's over.”

Margaret laughed.

“No.”

She turned toward me.

“It's only beginning.”

I stepped forward.

“You took my daughter.”

Margaret's expression didn't change.

“She was never yours alone.”

“She is my child.”

“She carries our blood.”

“So do I.”

“Yes.”

Margaret smiled.

“And that is why you're dangerous.”

I looked around the room.

“What do you want?”

The scarred man answered.

“Your signature.”

I laughed.

“On what?”

“A new agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“Control of the Meridian Trust.”

“No.”

“You haven't heard the terms.”

“I don't care.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“You'll care when you learn what happens if you refuse.”

“What?”

She pressed a button.

A screen appeared.

It showed Ethan.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

My heart stopped.

“Ethan!”

He looked up.

His face was bruised.

His hands were tied.

Margaret smiled.

“Sign.”

“No.”

She nodded.

The scarred man raised a gun toward Ethan.

I froze.

“Stop.”

Margaret smiled.

“Sign.”

I looked at Ethan.

He shook his head.

“Don't.”

“Ethan.”

“Don't sign.”

The gun moved closer to his head.

I looked at Margaret.

“If I sign, you release him?”

“Yes.”

“And Sophie?”

“Safe.”

“And Lucas?”

“Free.”

“And my mother?”

“Free.”

I stared.

“Everyone?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

She remained silent.

“Is it true?”

She finally spoke.

“No.”

I turned.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret cannot honor that agreement.”

Margaret laughed.

“Still protecting your favorite granddaughter?”

“No.”

Elizabeth looked at me.

“I'm protecting the truth.”

I looked at the contract.

“What's hidden?”

Elizabeth answered:

“The final clause.”

I stared at the document.

A small section was blacked out.

“What's there?”

Margaret's face changed.

Elizabeth said:

“Read it.”

I leaned closer.

The text slowly appeared.

THE SIGNATORY SHALL TRANSFER NOT ONLY OWNERSHIP OF THE TRUST...

I swallowed.

“…but all rights to the bloodline.”

My eyes widened.

“What does that mean?”

Elizabeth whispered:

“It means your children.”

I looked at Sophie.

“No.”

Margaret smiled.

“If you sign, Sophie belongs to the Founders.”

I tore the contract in half.

Margaret's smile vanished.

“Then we do this the old way.”

She nodded.

The doors slammed shut.

Guards surrounded us.

I grabbed Sophie.

Lucas stepped forward.

My mother stood beside me.

Ethan appeared on the screen.

Then he smiled.

And said something that made my blood freeze.

“Vivian.”

I looked at him.

“Trust me.”

The screen went black.

A second later...

the entire chamber exploded into darkness.

Emergency lights flashed.

Gunfire erupted.

People screamed.

I pulled Sophie beneath the table.

Lucas fired toward the guards.

My mother grabbed a fallen weapon.

Elizabeth moved with shocking speed.

She struck one guard.

Then another.

I stared.

“She's eighty!”

Lucas shouted:

“She isn't!”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“She's much older.”

A guard rushed toward Sophie.

I fired.

He fell.

Sophie screamed.

“Mommy!”

“I'm here.”

Another explosion.

The glass table shattered.

Margaret disappeared.

Marcus disappeared.

Richard vanished.

The Council scattered.

Only Elizabeth remained.

She looked at me.

“Now you see.”

“See what?”

“They're afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

She looked at Sophie.

“Of what she becomes.”

We escaped through a service tunnel.

Lucas led us.

My mother followed.

Elizabeth came last.

I didn't trust her.

But I needed her.

We reached a steel elevator.

Lucas entered a code.

The doors closed.

As we descended, Elizabeth spoke.

“You cannot save everyone.”

I looked at her.

“I don't have to.”

“You will lose people.”

“I already have.”

“Ethan may die.”

I looked at her.

“He won't.”

“You don't know that.”

“I believe him.”

Elizabeth smiled.

“That's what makes you dangerous.”

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

We entered a hidden laboratory.

Thousands of files lined the walls.

Medical records.

Genetic charts.

Blood samples.

Photographs.

I stopped.

“What is this?”

Elizabeth answered:

“The bloodline archive.”

I walked toward it.

My name was there.

Sophie's.

Lucas's.

Ethan's.

My mother's.

Then another name.

I froze.

VIVIENNE WHITMORE — SUBJECT A.

I opened the file.

Inside was a photograph of me as a newborn.

Beside it was another baby.

A boy.

Lucas.

Then a third photograph.

Another baby.

I stared.

“No.”

My mother came closer.

“Vivian…”

“There were three.”

She closed her eyes.

“What?”

“You told me there were two.”

“I…”

I pulled the photograph from the file.

A third child.

A boy.

Identical to me.

Identical to Lucas.

I looked at Elizabeth.

“Who is he?”

She said nothing.

“WHO IS HE?”

Elizabeth whispered:

“Samuel.”

“Where is he?”

Silence.

My mother began crying.

“Mom.”

She couldn't answer.

Lucas stepped forward.

“I know.”

I turned.

“You know?”

He nodded.

“He's the one they called the First Heir.”

My heart stopped.

“The one who was never born?”

Lucas shook his head.

“He was born.”

“Then why did they erase him?”

Lucas looked at Elizabeth.

“Because he was stronger than all of us.”

A monitor suddenly came alive.

A man's face appeared.

Young.

Maybe twenty-five.

Dark hair.

My eyes.

Lucas's eyes.

Ethan's eyes.

His face.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

“Hello, sisters.”

I couldn't breathe.

Sisters.

Plural.

Then he said:

“Hello, brother.”

Lucas stepped backward.

“No.”

The screen flickered.

The man's voice became clearer.

“My name is Samuel Whitmore.”

He smiled.

“And I've been waiting for you.”

I stared at the screen.

“Where are you?”

His smile widened.

“Inside the empire.”

“What empire?”

“The one your family thinks it controls.”

The screen went black.

Then every alarm in the laboratory began screaming.

Elizabeth looked terrified.

For the first time...

truly terrified.

“What?”

I asked.

She whispered:

“Samuel has activated the Founders' system.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked at me.

“It means the empire behind the empire…”

She swallowed.

“…now belongs to him.”

I stared at the darkness.

Then my mother's phone rang.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Mom.”

My mother dropped the phone.

I picked it up.

“Samuel?”

Silence.

Then:

“Bring Vivian.”

I froze.

“Why?”

“Because she deserves to know the truth.”

“What truth?”

A pause.

Then:

“She wasn't born to inherit the empire.”

My blood ran cold.

“She was born to destroy it.”

The call ended.

I looked at Elizabeth.

At Lucas.

At Sophie.

And finally at my mother.

For the first time in my life...

I realized the greatest threat to my family wasn't outside it.

It was the child they had hidden from all of us.

May you like

My brother.

Samuel.
