Chapter 10 — The Mother Who Finally Woke Up

Chapter 10 — The Mother Who Finally Woke Up

Amelia opened her eyes at 6:14 in the morning.

For several seconds, she didn't recognize the ceiling.

White.

Sterile.

Unfamiliar.

Then she heard a child crying.

“Mommy…”

Amelia turned her head.

Lily was sitting beside the bed.

Rose stood behind her.

And Ethan was there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Amelia's lips trembled.

“Lily?”

The little girl smiled through her tears.

“I'm here.”

Amelia reached for her.

Lily climbed carefully onto the edge of the bed.

Amelia held her.

Then her eyes moved to Rose.

The little girl was standing very still.

Afraid to come closer.

Amelia stared at her.

Her breath caught.

“Rose.”

Rose whispered:

“Hi, Mommy.”

Amelia covered her mouth.

Then she began to cry.

She reached out.

Rose ran into her arms.

For the first time in five years, Amelia held both daughters at the same time.

And the woman who had spent seven years trapped between life and death finally understood that the family she had fought to protect had survived.

But the relief lasted less than a minute.

Because Ethan had a question.

A question that had waited seven years.

“Why?”

Amelia looked at him.

He stood at the foot of the bed.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

That made it worse.

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“You knew Michael was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel was my brother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Lily survived.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Rose existed.”

Amelia nodded.

“And you still let me mourn you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I had no choice.”

Ethan looked away.

“You always had a choice.”

Amelia's voice broke.

“Not after the fire.”

Seven years earlier.

The hospital had been burning.

Smoke filled the maternity wing.

Alarms screamed.

Doctors ran through corridors.

Amelia was lying in a bed with blood on her gown.

She had just delivered Lily.

A nurse shouted:

“The oxygen lines are failing!”

Amelia looked toward the incubator.

Her newborn daughter was barely breathing.

“Take her.”

The nurse shook her head.

“We can't leave.”

“Please.”

“I can't.”

Then the doors opened.

Richard entered.

He wasn't wearing a doctor's coat.

He was wearing a black suit.

Calm.

Perfectly composed.

Amelia stared at him.

“Where is Ethan?”

Richard smiled.

“He's safe.”

“Where?”

“Not here.”

Amelia immediately understood.

“You caused this.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You're too intelligent.”

He looked toward the infant.

“That child cannot survive.”

Amelia's blood ran cold.

“You won't touch her.”

Richard looked at the nurse.

“Take the baby.”

The nurse hesitated.

Richard pulled out a gun.

“Now.”

The nurse picked up Lily.

Amelia screamed.

“NO!”

Richard grabbed Amelia's wrist.

“You have one minute.”

“For what?”

“To say goodbye.”

The nurse ran.

She didn't go where Richard ordered.

She disappeared through a maintenance corridor.

She had been working with Michael.

She knew about the Blackwood trust.

She knew Lily was the heir.

And she knew Richard intended to erase her.

The nurse reached the emergency exit.

But before she could leave, the building shook.

A steel beam collapsed.

She fell.

Lily was thrown from her arms.

The baby landed on a pile of medical blankets.

Alive.

Crying.

The nurse crawled toward her.

Then another woman appeared.

Catherine.

She picked up the child.

The nurse whispered:

“Take her.”

Catherine looked at the baby.

“Where?”

“Anywhere Richard can't find her.”

Catherine nodded.

Then she disappeared into the smoke.

Amelia had believed Lily was dead.

Until three days later.

A secret message reached her.

THE BABY SURVIVED.

Amelia had tried to escape.

Richard caught her.

He told her Ethan had died.

He showed her photographs.

Fake photographs.

A burned vehicle.

A body they claimed belonged to Ethan.

Amelia broke.

She believed him.

Then Richard told her the truth.

Ethan was alive.

But if Amelia contacted him, Lily would die.

So Amelia agreed to disappear.

She was moved from one hidden facility to another.

Drugged.

Sedated.

Kept under constant surveillance.

Seven years.

She had watched her daughters grow through photographs.

Never touching them.

Never hearing their voices.

Never holding them.

Until today.

Back in the hospital room, Amelia looked at Ethan.

“I thought if I stayed alive, eventually I could protect you.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“I did.”

“Then why?”

“Because every time I tried to escape, someone died.”

Ethan froze.

“What do you mean?”

Amelia looked toward Daniel.

“Ask him.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I was ordered to watch the facility.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Because Richard threatened Thomas.”

Ethan's expression softened.

“You were protecting your son.”

Daniel nodded.

Amelia continued:

“Everyone was protecting someone.”

She looked at Ethan.

“And that's exactly how Richard controlled us.”

Ethan sat beside her.

“What happened to Michael?”

“He went underground.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard tried to kill him.”

“And the man controlling Richard?”

Amelia hesitated.

“I don't know his real name.”

“But you know him.”

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Amelia looked toward the window.

“He calls himself Gabriel.”

Ethan frowned.

“Gabriel Blackwood?”

“Yes.”

“Samuel's other son.”

Amelia nodded.

“He was supposed to inherit everything.”

“But Michael was the rightful heir.”

“Yes.”

“And Gabriel wanted the fortune.”

“More than that.”

Amelia's expression darkened.

“He wanted revenge.”

“For what?”

“Samuel chose Michael.”

Ethan stared.

“That's it?”

“No.”

Amelia shook her head.

“Gabriel believed Samuel humiliated him.”

“So he killed him?”

“Samuel wasn't killed.”

“Then?”

“Gabriel forged his father's death.”

Ethan frowned.

“And Richard?”

“Richard was Gabriel's instrument.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“So my father worked for him.”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“Another instrument.”

“Eleanor?”

“Another.”

“Catherine?”

Amelia looked at her.

“She was different.”

“How?”

“She wanted the family to survive.”

The door opened.

Catherine entered.

She looked exhausted.

Amelia stared at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Amelia said:

“You almost lost her.”

Catherine's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You promised Samuel.”

“I failed.”

“You let them hide Lily.”

“I was trying to find her.”

“You knew she was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You watched her grow.”

Catherine nodded.

“I watched from a distance.”

Amelia's voice trembled.

“You should have told Ethan.”

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn't you?”

Catherine looked at Ethan.

“Because I was afraid of what he would do.”

Ethan stared.

“What would I do?”

“Destroy the family.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You were right.”

Catherine looked down.

“You would have gone after Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“And they would have killed Lily.”

Ethan became silent.

Catherine whispered:

“I chose the wrong way to protect you.”

Ethan didn't answer.

Amelia reached for Catherine's hand.

Catherine looked surprised.

“We all made mistakes.”

Amelia said.

“But now we fix them.”

That afternoon, Ethan held a family meeting.

For the first time, everyone sat at the same table.

Ethan.

Amelia.

Lily.

Rose.

Daniel.

Thomas.

Michael.

Catherine.

Even Richard's old legal advisor had been brought in.

Ethan placed the original will on the table.

“This changes everything.”

Michael nodded.

“The heirs must be publicly recognized.”

Daniel looked at his son.

Thomas was quiet.

Lily held Rose's hand.

Ethan looked at the children.

“No more secrets.”

Amelia nodded.

“No more hiding.”

Catherine closed her eyes.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Does that mean they'll come for us?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“But they won't take you.”

Lily raised her hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“What if they come at night?”

Ethan smiled.

“Then I'll be awake.”

She smiled.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

That night, Amelia couldn't sleep.

She walked to the hospital window.

The city glittered below.

Ethan entered.

“You should rest.”

“So should you.”

He smiled.

“I've forgotten how.”

She looked at him.

“Do you hate me?”

Ethan stopped.

“No.”

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you forgive me?”

He thought for a long moment.

“I don't know.”

Amelia nodded.

“That’s fair.”

He approached.

“I spent seven years believing you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I hated myself for surviving.”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“I hated myself for leaving you.”

“But you're here now.”

“Yes.”

He took her hand.

“That's what matters.”

Amelia looked at him.

“I have one more secret.”

Ethan's expression tightened.

“What?”

“The fire wasn't the beginning.”

“What do you mean?”

“Richard had been planning the Blackwood takeover for years.”

“Then what started it?”

Amelia whispered:

“Your grandfather discovered Gabriel had another child.”

Ethan froze.

“Another heir?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Amelia looked directly at him.

“Gabriel's child was the person who helped him.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who?”

Amelia's eyes filled with fear.

“Victor.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Victor is Gabriel's son?”

Amelia nodded.

“He was never loyal to Richard.”

“He was using him.”

“Yes.”

“To reach the heirs.”

“Yes.”

Ethan stared.

“So Gabriel and Victor are family.”

“Yes.”

“And Richard?”

“A pawn.”

Ethan suddenly understood.

The entire empire had been controlled by people he had trusted.

His father.

His uncle.

His grandmother.

Even Victor.

But there was still one person who had not been explained.

“Where is Gabriel?”

Amelia looked toward the door.

“I don't know.”

Then the lights flickered.

Ethan turned.

The hospital corridor went dark.

An alarm sounded.

Amelia grabbed his hand.

“Ethan.”

“What?”

“He knows you're here.”

A red light appeared on the security monitor.

Then a message.

YOU SAVED THE MOTHER.

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Lily.

Sleeping.

Then Rose.

Sleeping beside her.

Then Thomas.

The message continued:

NOW I WILL TAKE THE CHILDREN.

Ethan's face hardened.

Amelia whispered:

“Gabriel.”

Ethan reached for his phone.

“Call Daniel.”

But before he could dial, another message appeared.

MIDNIGHT. BLACKWOOD CEMETERY. COME ALONE.

Ethan stared at it.

Amelia shook her head.

“Don't go.”

“I have to.”

“No.”

“He wants me there.”

“That's why it's a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don't go.”

Ethan looked at her.

“He knows where the children sleep.”

Amelia went silent.

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“I spent seven years thinking I had lost you.”

He looked toward the door.

“I won't spend another night wondering if my children are safe.”

He walked away.

Amelia grabbed his hand.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

She whispered:

“Come back.”

He smiled.

“I will.”

At 11:58 p.m., Ethan arrived at the cemetery.

Alone.

Rain fell over the graves.

The old Blackwood family mausoleum stood in darkness.

Ethan walked toward it.

The door opened.

He stepped inside.

A man was waiting.

Gabriel.

Ethan had never seen him before.

Yet he immediately knew.

The resemblance to Michael was undeniable.

Same eyes.

Same bone structure.

Same family blood.

Gabriel smiled.

“You finally came.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Where are my children?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“First, we talk.”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

Gabriel smiled.

“You have everything to say to me.”

He stepped closer.

“You want to know why your father lied.”

Ethan said nothing.

“You want to know why your mother disappeared.”

Silence.

“Why Amelia was imprisoned.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Why Lily survived.”

Gabriel paused.

“And why Rose was hidden.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You did all of this.”

“No.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Your family did.”

He handed Ethan a small envelope.

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

His name was on it.

But beneath the father's name was another.

Not Richard.

Not Michael.

A name Ethan had never seen before.

Gabriel Blackwood.

Ethan stared.

Gabriel whispered:

“You're not Michael's son.”

Ethan's hands began shaking.

“You're mine.”

The cemetery went silent.

May you like

Then Gabriel smiled.

“And now you finally know why everyone was afraid of you.”
