Chapter 4 — The Nurse Who Saved Lily

Chapter 4 — The Nurse Who Saved Lily

The old hospital had been abandoned for seven years.

Yet at midnight, a single light was still burning beneath the ruins.

Ethan Blackwood stood outside the collapsed eastern entrance, staring at the darkness.

His father's message remained on his phone.

COME TO THE HOSPITAL ALONE.

OR YOUR WIFE DIES BEFORE MORNING.

He had come.

But he had not come alone.

Daniel stood twenty yards behind him.

Three security vehicles waited beyond the broken gates.

And hidden inside the armored SUV was Lily.

Ethan had promised his daughter he would protect her.

He had no intention of keeping that promise halfway.

Daniel approached.

“You shouldn't have brought security.”

“I didn't.”

Daniel looked toward the vehicles.

Ethan said nothing.

“You lied.”

“I learned from my family.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Fair enough.”

Ethan looked at the ruined building.

“Where's the entrance?”

“Basement.”

“Show me.”

Daniel stopped him.

“Before we go down there, you need to know something.”

“What?”

“The hospital isn't empty.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Who is inside?”

“People who have been waiting.”

“For me?”

“For someone.”

Daniel looked at the darkness.

“I don't think they expected you to survive this long.”

Ethan touched the inside of his coat.

The bronze key was there.

“Neither did they.”

They entered through a narrow service corridor.

The walls were blackened.

The smell of smoke still lingered beneath years of dust.

Ethan walked slowly.

Every step brought back memories.

The night of the fire.

The screaming.

The alarms.

The doctors running.

The last time he had seen Amelia.

He had been twenty feet away from her.

Yet someone had stopped him from reaching her.

A security guard.

A man Ethan had trusted.

The guard had told him:

“Sir, the neonatal wing is sealed.”

Ethan had believed him.

Now he understood.

Someone had wanted him away from the room.

Daniel stopped beside a concrete wall.

“Here.”

Ethan looked at it.

“There's nothing.”

Daniel pressed his palm against a section of brick.

A hidden mechanism clicked.

The wall moved.

Behind it was a staircase.

Ethan stared.

“This was here?”

“Yes.”

“Who built it?”

“Our grandfather.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at him.

“To hide the family secrets.”

They descended.

Twenty feet below the ruined hospital, the air changed.

It was colder.

Cleaner.

The walls were reinforced steel.

Ethan saw cameras.

Old ones.

But some had new wires.

“Someone still uses this place.”

Daniel nodded.

“They never stopped.”

They reached a corridor.

A red light blinked at the far end.

Then they heard footsteps.

Ethan raised his hand.

Daniel stopped.

A woman appeared.

She was wearing a nurse's uniform.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a medical folder.

She looked at Ethan.

Then Daniel.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You're alive.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Who are you?”

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Clara Bennett.”

Ethan's breath caught.

Clara.

The nurse Lily had mentioned.

The woman who had carried his daughter out of the fire.

“You saved Lily.”

Clara nodded.

“I tried.”

“Where have you been?”

“Hiding.”

“From whom?”

“Everyone.”

Ethan walked closer.

“Tell me what happened that night.”

Clara looked at Daniel.

Then at Ethan.

“You're finally ready.”

“For what?”

“The truth.”

Clara led them into a small room.

There was an old table.

Two chairs.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Ethan saw Amelia.

Lily.

Himself.

Victor.

Richard.

Eleanor.

And dozens of other people.

He stared.

“How long have you been keeping these?”

“Seven years.”

“Why?”

“To remember who was lying.”

Ethan turned.

“You knew?”

“I knew enough.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“Because they threatened my son.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

Silence.

“Victor killed him.”

Clara looked down.

“After that, I understood there was no safe way to tell you.”

Ethan stared at the photographs.

“What did you know?”

Clara pointed to one.

Amelia.

“She wasn't supposed to die.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“The fire was designed to make everyone believe she died.”

“But the body—”

“There was no body.”

Ethan's eyes widened.

“What?”

Clara shook her head.

“The hospital identified another woman as Amelia.”

Ethan couldn't breathe.

“You're telling me the woman buried beside me wasn't my wife?”

“No.”

“Then whose body was it?”

“We never found out.”

Ethan stepped back.

His entire world shifted again.

He had spent seven years visiting a grave that contained a stranger.

Clara continued.

“Amelia was moved through the basement.”

“By whom?”

“Me.”

Ethan stared.

“You saved her too.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you bring her to me?”

Clara's voice broke.

“Because someone arrived before I could.”

“Who?”

“Richard.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“My father.”

Clara nodded.

“He took Amelia.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Why?”

“Because he told me something.”

“What?”

Clara looked directly at him.

“He said if Ethan ever finds his daughter, Amelia will die.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“He wasn't lying.”

Ethan turned.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I saw the orders.”

“What orders?”

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folded document.

Ethan opened it.

It was a transfer authorization.

PATIENT: AMELIA BLACKWOOD

STATUS: CRITICAL

DESTINATION: BLACKWOOD PRIVATE FACILITY

AUTHORIZED BY: RICHARD BLACKWOOD

Ethan stared.

At the bottom was another signature.

ELEANOR BLACKWOOD.

His grandmother.

The woman everyone said was dead.

Ethan looked at Clara.

“Why did they keep Amelia alive?”

Clara answered quietly.

“Because she knew where the vault was.”

“The vault.”

“Yes.”

“The original Blackwood Trust?”

Clara nodded.

“Your grandfather discovered that the family fortune had been built on stolen assets.”

Ethan frowned.

“What stolen assets?”

“Government contracts.”

“That's impossible.”

“Your grandfather disagreed.”

She pointed to the wall.

“He tried to expose them.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

Daniel nodded.

“I learned years ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“You weren't ready.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Clara walked toward another photograph.

It showed Amelia holding a newborn.

Lily.

But there was something different about the picture.

Amelia was crying.

Ethan stared.

“When was this taken?”

“Three days before the fire.”

“Why was she crying?”

“She had discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That your father wasn't working alone.”

Ethan's face tightened.

“Who was helping him?”

Clara looked at him.

“Your mother.”

Ethan froze.

“My mother is dead.”

“No.”

Clara's voice was steady.

“Catherine Blackwood is alive.”

Ethan stared.

“You know her?”

“I met her.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Where?”

“In this hospital.”

Ethan's hands began shaking.

“My mother wasn't Eleanor?”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who was Eleanor?”

“A woman your grandfather married after Catherine disappeared.”

Ethan couldn't speak.

Clara continued.

“Catherine was your biological mother.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“She was mine too.”

The brothers stood in silence.

Ethan had spent his entire life believing his mother was one woman.

Now he discovered he had been born to another.

The woman he remembered was an impostor.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

Clara whispered:

“They know we're here.”

Ethan's phone vibrated.

A message.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.

Then another.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

Ethan turned.

A screen on the wall flickered on.

A live video appeared.

Amelia.

Her eyes were open.

She was awake.

A man stood behind her.

Richard.

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

“Dad.”

Richard smiled.

“Hello, son.”

“Where is she?”

“You're standing beneath the hospital.”

“I know.”

“Then you know what happens next.”

Ethan's voice hardened.

“Let her go.”

Richard laughed.

“You still think you have something to negotiate with.”

Ethan looked at the camera.

“I have Lily.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Exactly.”

Ethan froze.

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“Bring the child.”

“No.”

“Then Amelia dies.”

Ethan's fists tightened.

“You've had her for seven years.”

“And I can have her for seven more.”

“Why?”

Richard smiled.

“Because your wife is the only person who knows where your grandfather hid the original trust.”

Ethan looked at Clara.

She nodded.

Richard continued.

“And now I know you have the key.”

Ethan's hand went to his pocket.

The bronze key.

“How?”

Richard smiled.

“Because Lily has been carrying it for three days.”

Ethan's eyes widened.

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked equally shocked.

Richard laughed.

“You never were very good at protecting people.”

The screen went black.

Clara suddenly grabbed Ethan.

“Don't go.”

“I have to.”

“No.”

“She'll kill Amelia.”

Clara shook her head.

“That's what they want.”

“What?”

“They don't want Lily.”

“Then what do they want?”

“The key.”

Ethan stared at her.

“They think the key opens the vault.”

“It does.”

“What are you saying?”

Clara took a breath.

“The key doesn't open the vault.”

Ethan frowned.

“Then what does it open?”

“The room before the vault.”

Silence.

“What is in that room?”

Clara looked toward Daniel.

“Evidence.”

“What kind?”

“Everything.”

She pointed toward the old hospital floor.

“Names.”

“Payments.”

“Orders.”

“Recordings.”

“Photographs.”

“Medical files.”

“And proof that the fire was planned.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“Why hasn't anyone found it?”

“Because the vault doesn't exist on any blueprint.”

“Who knows about it?”

“Your grandfather.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Eleanor?”

“No.”

Clara looked at Daniel.

“Your brother.”

Ethan turned.

Daniel looked away.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You had the key.”

“No.”

“Then where did Lily get it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“From Amelia.”

Ethan's eyes widened.

“She gave it to Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Before the fire?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew Lily would survive.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

His wife had planned for a future she might never see.

She had trusted their daughter with the key to a secret powerful enough to destroy the family.

And Lily had carried it for seven years.

A gunshot echoed somewhere above them.

Clara flinched.

“They're here.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“How many?”

“Too many.”

“Can we get Amelia?”

“Not through the main corridor.”

“Then where?”

Clara pointed toward a narrow tunnel.

“There is another way.”

They ran.

The tunnel was barely wide enough for two people.

Ethan followed Clara.

Daniel guarded the rear.

Behind them, footsteps echoed.

Someone shouted:

“Stop!”

They kept moving.

At the end of the tunnel was a steel door.

Clara pulled out a small key.

It opened.

Beyond it was a medical room.

Empty.

Ethan stopped.

“Where is Amelia?”

Clara looked around.

“She was here.”

A monitor still showed a heartbeat.

Ethan ran toward it.

The bed was empty.

Then he saw blood on the floor.

“Where is she?”

Clara's face went pale.

“They moved her.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

A voice came from behind them.

“I do.”

They turned.

Victor stood in the doorway.

He held a gun.

Two men stood behind him.

Victor smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You poisoned my tea.”

Victor shook his head.

“Nora did.”

“You ordered it.”

“Yes.”

“You killed Amelia.”

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

Victor smiled.

“Still alive.”

“Where?”

Victor's eyes moved toward Lily's photograph on Ethan's phone.

“That's the wrong question.”

“What is the right one?”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Why did your wife survive?”

Ethan's heart stopped.

Victor continued.

“Because your mother wanted her alive.”

Ethan stared.

“Catherine?”

Victor laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Victor lowered the gun slightly.

“Your mother didn't want Amelia dead.”

“Why?”

“Because Amelia knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Ask your brother.”

Ethan turned.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

Victor smiled.

“Ask him who really started the fire.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Daniel?”

His brother said nothing.

“Tell me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Victor laughed.

“You see?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Daniel finally whispered:

“It was me.”

The world seemed to stop.

Ethan stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I started the fire.”

Ethan's face went blank.

“You…”

“I didn't know Amelia and Lily were inside.”

Victor smiled.

“I told him the room was empty.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“I was trying to destroy the records.”

Ethan couldn't move.

Seven years of grief.

Seven years of searching.

Seven years of believing his family had murdered his wife and daughter.

And the man standing beside him had helped start the fire.

His own brother.

Then Daniel whispered:

“But I didn't know your father had locked the doors.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Richard ordered the doors sealed.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“He wanted everyone inside to die.”

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

Daniel looked at him.

“I started the fire.”

“But Richard turned it into a massacre.”

Victor stepped backward.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

Because Ethan was no longer looking at Daniel.

He was looking at him.

And Ethan finally understood.

The seven years they had stolen from him had not been one person's crime.

It was an entire family's conspiracy.

But there was still one person who could prove everything.

Amelia.

And somewhere in the darkness beneath the hospital, she was still alive.

Victor raised his gun.

“Enough.”

A red laser appeared on his chest.

Then another.

And another.

Security officers emerged from the tunnel.

Ethan had not come alone after all.

Victor looked around.

His face collapsed.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You made one mistake.”

Victor swallowed.

“What?”

“You told me to come alone.”

Ethan smiled coldly.

“But you forgot something.”

He raised his phone.

The entire confrontation had been recorded.

Victor's face went white.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Find Amelia.”

Then at Clara.

“Get Lily somewhere safe.”

Finally, he looked directly at Victor.

“And you…”

Ethan stepped closer.

“…are going to tell me where my wife is.”

Victor said nothing.

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Because seven years ago, you stole my family.”

He paused.

“Tonight, I'm taking them back.”

From somewhere deep beneath the hospital, a woman's voice suddenly echoed through the corridor.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

“Ethan…”

He froze.

“Amelia?”

The voice came again.

“Don't trust…”

A pause.

Then:

“…the nurse.”

Ethan slowly turned toward Clara.

The nurse who had supposedly saved Lily.

Clara's face went white.

May you like

And for the first time, Ethan wondered whether the woman who had saved his daughter seven years ago…

had also been the woman who helped destroy his family.
