Chapter 9 — The Night They Came for Lily

Chapter 9 — The Night They Came for Lily

At 11:47 p.m., every light in the Blackwood mansion went out.

Lily woke immediately.

She sat upright in the small bedroom Ethan had prepared for her and listened.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No voices.

No sound from the hallway.

Then she heard three soft knocks against the window.

Lily froze.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

She pulled the blanket around herself.

“Daddy?”

No answer.

She climbed out of bed and walked toward the door.

Before she could reach it, the handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to enter.

Lily stepped backward.

The door opened.

A man wearing black stood in the hallway.

He looked at her.

Then smiled.

“There you are.”

Lily screamed.

“Daddy!”

Ethan woke instantly.

He had fallen asleep in a chair outside Amelia's hospital room.

Daniel was beside him.

“What?”

A security alarm suddenly exploded through the corridor.

“Lily!”

Ethan ran.

Daniel followed.

The mansion's emergency lights turned red.

Security personnel rushed through the halls.

A guard shouted:

“Someone breached the east wing!”

Ethan's heart hammered.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Her room.”

They reached the bedroom.

The door was open.

The bed was empty.

Ethan stopped breathing.

“No.”

He ran inside.

Lily's stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

The window was broken.

A small yellow pajama sleeve hung from a jagged piece of glass.

Daniel looked outside.

“There's a vehicle.”

Ethan grabbed his coat.

“Get the cars.”

“Already moving.”

Then a voice came from behind them.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

Amelia stood in the doorway.

Pale.

Weak.

But awake.

“Lily.”

Ethan stared at her.

“She’s been taken.”

Amelia's expression changed.

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

She closed her eyes.

“Then it's started.”

“What?”

“The third heir.”

Ethan froze.

“What does Lily have to do with the third heir?”

Amelia looked at him.

“Everything.”

The black SUV disappeared into the night.

Inside, Lily sat in the back seat.

Her hands were not tied.

The man beside her hadn't hurt her.

That frightened her even more.

“Where are we going?”

The man didn't answer.

“What's your name?”

Silence.

Lily looked toward the driver.

“Are you taking me to Daddy?”

The driver glanced at her in the mirror.

“No.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Then I don't want to go.”

The man beside her sighed.

“Your father will come.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

“Why?”

“Because he always comes for you.”

Lily looked at him carefully.

“You know my daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Is he bad?”

The man hesitated.

“No.”

“Then why are you taking me?”

“Because if we don't, someone worse will.”

Lily frowned.

“Who?”

The man looked out the window.

“The people who killed your mother.”

Lily's face changed.

“My mommy isn't dead.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“She's alive.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“Then why did Daddy say she was sick?”

“Because he didn't know the truth.”

Lily looked down.

She hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Everybody lies.”

The man said nothing.

Ethan's convoy reached the highway.

Daniel was driving.

Two security vehicles followed.

Ethan stared at the tracking screen.

“Where is she?”

Daniel pointed.

“North.”

“How far?”

“Twenty miles.”

“Can we intercept?”

“Not yet.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

A man's voice replied:

“Alive.”

“Put her on.”

“You'll hear her soon.”

“Who are you?”

“You already know me.”

Ethan frowned.

“Richard?”

A pause.

“No.”

“Then who?”

The caller laughed softly.

“Someone your father tried very hard to erase.”

The line ended.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Ethan looked at the tracker.

The vehicle had stopped moving.

“Why did they stop?”

Daniel slowed.

“They're waiting.”

“For us?”

“Yes.”

The SUV was parked outside an abandoned railway station.

The man opened Lily's door.

“Come.”

She refused.

“No.”

“Lily.”

“You're taking me to bad people.”

He crouched.

“I am trying to keep you alive.”

She stared at him.

“Then call Daddy.”

He smiled sadly.

“He's already coming.”

A distant engine approached.

The man stood.

“Too late.”

Lily looked toward the road.

Three black vehicles appeared.

Ethan stepped out.

“Lily!”

Her face lit up.

“Daddy!”

She ran.

The man reached for her.

Ethan raised his weapon.

“Let her go.”

The man slowly released her.

Lily ran into Ethan's arms.

He dropped to his knees.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

Ethan hugged her tightly.

“I thought I lost you.”

Lily whispered:

“I knew you'd come.”

Daniel approached the man.

“Who are you?”

The man removed his hood.

Ethan stared.

He recognized him.

It was an old family employee.

Marcus Vale.

Richard's former driver.

“I thought you were dead.”

Marcus smiled.

“So did your father.”

Ethan stood.

“You took my daughter.”

“To protect her.”

“You don't get to make that decision.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Marcus looked around.

“We have minutes.”

“Before what?”

“Before the people who really took her arrive.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who?”

Marcus pointed toward the railway tunnel.

“Look.”

A second convoy entered the station.

Not three vehicles.

Six.

Armored.

Ethan's security team raised their weapons.

Marcus whispered:

“They followed me.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“Get her into the car.”

Daniel grabbed her.

“Go.”

Lily resisted.

“No!”

“Lily.”

“Daddy!”

Ethan looked at her.

“I'll be right behind you.”

She finally nodded.

Daniel carried her away.

The first shot rang out.

The station erupted into chaos.

Ethan fired toward the vehicles.

Security guards returned fire.

Marcus pulled Ethan behind a concrete pillar.

“You need to leave.”

“Who are these people?”

“Blackwood contractors.”

“My father's?”

“Not anymore.”

“Whose?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Catherine.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she attack Lily?”

“Because she doesn't want the third heir found.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You know where the third heir is.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Marcus looked toward the tunnel.

“Her name is Rose.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Rose?”

“Your sister.”

Another explosion shook the station.

Marcus continued:

“Richard found her years ago.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he was using her.”

“For what?”

“To locate Lily.”

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Because Rose's DNA is the key to proving the original Blackwood bloodline.”

Ethan understood.

“Three heirs.”

“Yes.”

“Lily.”

“Thomas.”

“Rose.”

“Yes.”

“Together they unlock the trust.”

Marcus nodded.

“And Catherine wants all three.”

A bullet struck the pillar.

Marcus flinched.

“Go.”

Ethan looked toward Lily's car.

It was moving.

Then the rear window shattered.

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Lily!”

He ran.

Daniel had already pulled the vehicle behind cover.

Lily was safe.

But another car was approaching.

A black sedan.

It stopped.

The rear door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Ethan recognized her.

Catherine.

She stood in the middle of the gunfire without fear.

“Ethan!”

He raised his weapon.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Catherine shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“You tried to take her.”

“I tried to save her.”

“By kidnapping her?”

“By moving her before they arrived.”

Ethan stared.

“Who are they?”

Catherine pointed toward the tunnel.

“Your father.”

Ethan turned.

A man stepped out of the darkness.

Richard.

He wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a little girl.

Five years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her ear.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Rose.

His sister.

Richard held her hand.

Catherine's expression changed.

“Richard.”

He smiled.

“You came.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“I had to.”

He looked at Ethan.

“You wanted him to find her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he deserves the truth.”

Richard laughed.

“You still believe truth matters.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Richard looked down at Rose.

“She belongs to the family.”

“She belongs with me.”

Richard smiled.

“You've said that about every child.”

Ethan's anger exploded.

“You don't get to call yourself family.”

Richard's face hardened.

“I raised you.”

“You stole my life.”

“I saved it.”

“You murdered people.”

Richard said nothing.

Ethan pointed at Rose.

“And you used her.”

Richard looked at the child.

For the first time, guilt crossed his face.

“I protected her.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You keep using that word.”

Rose suddenly looked toward Ethan.

She was crying.

“Are you Ethan?”

He froze.

“Yes.”

“Mommy said you would come.”

Ethan's heart broke.

“Who is your mommy?”

Rose looked at Richard.

Richard's face changed.

“Don't.”

Rose whispered:

“Amelia.”

Ethan stopped.

“What?”

Rose nodded.

“Mommy told me your name.”

Ethan looked toward the hospital convoy.

Amelia.

His wife.

The woman he thought had only one child.

Lily.

But Rose had just called her Mommy.

He turned toward Richard.

“Rose is Amelia's daughter?”

Richard nodded.

“She was born before the fire.”

Ethan's voice shook.

“That means…”

“She's your daughter.”

The world seemed to stop.

Lily was not the only daughter he had lost.

For five years, Rose had lived without knowing him.

Ethan looked at the two little girls.

Lily stood beside Daniel.

Rose stood beside Richard.

Two children.

Two heirs.

Two pieces of a family that had been deliberately shattered.

Then a third vehicle arrived.

A man stepped out.

Victor.

Ethan stared.

“How did you escape?”

Victor smiled.

“Your family has more exits than you know.”

Catherine raised her weapon.

Victor raised his.

Everyone froze.

Victor looked at the children.

“Give me the heirs.”

Ethan stepped in front of them.

“No.”

Victor laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“The will.”

Ethan frowned.

Victor pointed at Lily.

“The will doesn't activate when the children are alive.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“What does it require?”

Victor smiled.

“One of the heirs must die.”

Silence.

Lily grabbed Ethan's hand.

Rose began crying.

Richard looked at Victor.

“You said the condition was symbolic.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

Ethan looked at the will case.

“Is that true?”

Marcus shouted:

“Don't listen to him!”

Victor smiled.

“Ask Michael.”

Ethan turned.

Michael stood behind him.

His face was grim.

“Victor is lying.”

Ethan exhaled.

“What does the will really say?”

Michael looked at the children.

“It says the inheritance activates only when all surviving heirs are publicly recognized.”

Ethan stared at him.

“That's all?”

“Yes.”

Victor's expression collapsed.

Michael continued:

“And once recognized, every person who participated in their concealment becomes legally exposed.”

Ethan understood.

“They need the heirs hidden.”

“Yes.”

“And dead.”

“Yes.”

Victor suddenly raised his weapon.

Everything happened at once.

Daniel fired.

Victor ducked.

Richard grabbed Rose.

Catherine grabbed Lily.

Security surrounded Ethan.

A single shot rang out.

Then another.

Victor fell.

The station became silent.

Ethan looked around.

No one moved.

Then he heard a small voice.

“Daddy?”

Lily.

He ran toward her.

She was safe.

Catherine had shielded her.

Ethan looked at his mother.

For the first time, he didn't know whether to hate her or thank her.

“Why did you save her?”

Catherine looked at Lily.

“Because she is my granddaughter.”

Then Rose ran forward.

“Daddy.”

Ethan knelt.

Rose stopped in front of him.

She looked frightened.

He opened his arms.

“Come here.”

She hesitated.

Then ran into him.

Ethan held both girls.

One in each arm.

Seven years of grief.

Seven years of lies.

Seven years stolen from him.

And suddenly, both daughters were alive.

But there was one problem.

Amelia still hadn't been rescued.

At dawn, Ethan returned to the hospital.

Amelia was awake.

Lily ran into her arms.

“Mommy!”

Amelia began crying.

Then Rose approached.

Slowly.

Amelia covered her mouth.

“Rose.”

The little girl nodded.

“Hi, Mommy.”

Amelia broke down.

She reached for her.

Both daughters embraced her.

Ethan stood at the doorway.

He watched the family he had thought he had lost return to him piece by piece.

Then Daniel walked over.

“There is something you need to see.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Daniel handed him a tablet.

A live security feed.

The Blackwood mansion.

Richard was leaving through the underground tunnel.

Ethan frowned.

“He escaped.”

Daniel nodded.

“But that's not the worst part.”

The camera zoomed in.

Richard stopped beside a black vehicle.

Someone was waiting for him.

Ethan stared.

The man turned toward the camera.

Michael.

Ethan's biological father.

But Michael was supposed to be with them.

Ethan's face hardened.

“That isn't Michael.”

Daniel nodded.

“No.”

“Then who is it?”

Daniel zoomed closer.

Ethan recognized the face.

It was the man from the photograph.

The man everyone believed had disappeared decades ago.

But now Ethan understood.

The person standing beside Richard wasn't Michael.

It was Samuel Blackwood's other surviving son.

The one who had been erased from every record.

The one who had been controlling Victor.

The one who had ordered the fire.

And the man turned toward the camera as if he knew Ethan was watching.

Then he smiled.

Ethan's phone rang.

He answered.

A deep voice whispered:

“You found your daughters.”

Ethan said nothing.

The voice continued:

“Now find your father.”

The call ended.

Ethan looked at Michael.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Amelia and the two girls.

The war was no longer about money.

May you like

It was about blood.

And somewhere beyond the city, the final Blackwood heir had finally stepped out of the shadows.
