Chapter 11 — The Secret Inside the Cole Trust

Chapter 11 — The Secret Inside the Cole Trust

The room went silent after Grace spoke.

“My father was murdered.”

Nathan stared at her.

He wanted to ask a hundred questions.

Who?

Why?

How?

But one thought came first.

“Was Richard involved?”

Grace didn't answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the black television screen.

“I don't know.”

Nathan frowned.

“You just said he was murdered.”

“I know.”

“Then how don't you know who did it?”

“Because my father spent the last months of his life making sure I wouldn't know.”

She looked down at Lily.

“He was protecting me.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“And now we're standing in the middle of a trust worth…”

“More than you think.”

Nathan turned.

Daniel Mercer had entered the room.

He had heard enough.

“How much?” Nathan asked.

Daniel looked at Grace.

“Do you have the original Miller trust documents?”

Grace nodded.

Daniel's expression changed.

“Then we need to see them immediately.”

The vault contained three boxes.

The first held Samuel Miller's business records.

The second contained old photographs and personal letters.

The third was sealed with black wax.

On the cover was a single sentence:

OPEN ONLY IN THE PRESENCE OF THE COLE TRUSTEE.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“You're the trustee?”

“Not of the Miller trust.”

“Then who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Grace opened the box.

Inside was a name.

Margaret Cole.

Nathan froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

Margaret entered the room.

She looked at the box.

“I wondered when you would find it.”

Nathan stared at her.

“You knew?”

Margaret nodded.

“For twenty-seven years.”

Grace looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Samuel asked me not to.”

“My father trusted you?”

“He did.”

“Why?”

Margaret sat down.

“Because he knew Richard would eventually try to take everything.”

Nathan's voice hardened.

“And you let him.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“For twenty-seven years?”

“Yes.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You watched him destroy people.”

“I know.”

“You watched him destroy Grace.”

“I know.”

“You watched him take Lily.”

Margaret's voice broke.

“I know.”

Grace looked away.

Then Daniel opened the trust.

The first page contained a legal clause.

He read it twice.

Then looked at Nathan.

“You need to hear this.”

THE COLE-MILLER FAMILY TRUST

Primary Beneficiary: Lily Grace Miller-Cole

Nathan froze.

Grace stared.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Secondary beneficiaries…”

He turned the page.

“Any legally recognized descendants of Nathan Cole.”

Nathan frowned.

“But Lily is the primary.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the next paragraph.

“Because the trust was amended five years before Lily was born.”

Grace's face went pale.

“By whom?”

Daniel pointed to the signature.

Richard Cole.

Nathan stepped back.

“My father created this?”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

Daniel continued reading.

“The primary beneficiary shall remain protected from direct control by Richard Cole.”

Nathan stared.

“Protected?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father could not access the trust.”

“Then why did he spend five years trying to take Lily?”

“Because he needed legal custody.”

Grace suddenly understood.

“If he had custody…”

“He could petition to become trustee.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“And then?”

Daniel's expression became grim.

“He could control the trust.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

His daughter was sitting on the floor, playing with a wooden horse.

She had no idea that millions of dollars were being discussed around her.

No idea that powerful adults had spent years planning her future.

Grace picked her up.

“She isn't a bank account.”

Nathan looked at her.

“I know.”

“Then don't let them turn her into one.”

“I won't.”

Daniel turned another page.

“This is where it gets strange.”

Nathan looked over.

“What?”

“The trust isn't only financial.”

“What else?”

Daniel pointed to a section titled:

PROTECTION CLAUSE.

He read:

“Should the primary beneficiary be threatened, concealed, unlawfully removed, or deprived of parental protection, the trust shall immediately activate its emergency succession provisions.”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel continued.

“The trust assets would be transferred into an independent structure.”

“To whom?”

“An external guardian.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at the document.

Then at Margaret.

She said nothing.

Nathan's voice sharpened.

“Who?”

Daniel answered:

“Grace.”

Grace froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“You're saying if Lily is threatened, I become the controlling trustee?”

“Correct.”

Nathan stared.

“That means Richard never needed Lily's money.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He needed control of Grace.”

Grace's face changed.

“Why?”

“Because you're the key to the trust.”

Then Daniel discovered another clause.

His expression became even more serious.

“This was added later.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

Nathan leaned over.

Daniel read:

“If the mother is removed, discredited, imprisoned, or declared legally unfit…”

Grace's hands began shaking.

“…the trust shall automatically transfer to Nathan Cole.”

Nathan stared.

“And if I'm removed?”

Daniel looked at the final line.

“It transfers to Lily when she reaches twenty-five.”

Nathan's voice was barely audible.

“So no matter what Richard did…”

“He could never permanently own it.”

Daniel nodded.

“The trust was designed to survive him.”

A strange silence filled the room.

Grace whispered:

“My father knew.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Knew what?”

“That Richard would come for Lily.”

“Why?”

Grace touched the document.

“Because Samuel told me once…”

She stopped.

“What?”

“He said Richard wasn't trying to steal the company.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then what?”

“He was trying to prevent someone from inheriting it.”

“Who?”

Grace looked at Lily.

“Me.”

Daniel found another document.

This one was handwritten.

Samuel Miller's signature appeared at the bottom.

Grace read it.

Her face slowly changed.

“What?”

Nathan stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

She handed it to him.

The letter was addressed to Margaret.

“If Grace has a daughter with Nathan, the child will unite the two bloodlines.”

Nathan stared.

Grace continued reading.

“That child will become the lawful beneficiary of the original Miller assets and the protected portion of the Cole trust.”

“Richard must never know the full terms.”

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“You knew about Lily before she was born.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“Did Richard?”

“I don't know.”

Grace whispered:

“He did.”

Nathan remembered the recording.

The child is useful.

It finally made sense.

Richard had known.

He had known Lily wasn't merely Nathan's daughter.

She was the person who could legally reclaim everything.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“How much is the trust worth?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Current valuation?”

“Yes.”

“Approximately four-point-eight billion.”

Grace stared.

Nathan didn't react.

He was too stunned.

“Four billion?”

Daniel nodded.

“And that's only the Miller trust.”

“What about the Cole trust?”

Daniel opened another document.

“That is where things become extraordinary.”

The Cole trust was older.

Much older.

It had been created by Nathan's grandfather.

Its assets included:

Corporate shares.

Land.

Private investments.

Energy holdings.

International funds.

And one controlling provision.

Daniel read slowly.

“Upon the death of Richard Cole…”

Nathan leaned closer.

“…control of the voting shares shall pass to his eldest surviving descendant.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

“That's me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to the clause.

“Read the definition.”

Nathan did.

Eldest surviving descendant shall mean the oldest descendant born of the direct union of the Cole and Miller bloodlines.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Grace whispered:

“Lily.”

Daniel nodded.

“Lily.”

Nathan sat down.

Everything suddenly made sense.

His father's obsession.

The separation.

The surveillance.

The attempt to control Lily.

The lies.

The custody case.

The five years of manipulation.

Richard hadn't been protecting the family.

He had been protecting his position.

And Lily's birth had made him vulnerable.

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Not even this?”

“No.”

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“I only knew my father wanted me to keep Lily safe.”

Nathan took her hand.

“Then he succeeded.”

A noise came from upstairs.

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!”

Grace ran.

Nathan followed.

They found Lily standing near the hallway.

She was holding an envelope.

“Someone left this.”

Nathan took it.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence.

THE TRUST ISN'T YOUR BIGGEST SECRET.

Grace froze.

Nathan opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard.

Edward.

Margaret.

And a fourth person.

Nathan recognized him immediately.

The man from the recording.

The man who had ordered Richard.

Nathan turned the photograph over.

Written on the back:

The Fourth Trustee.

Daniel looked at it.

His face went pale.

“That's impossible.”

Nathan stared.

“Who is he?”

Daniel whispered:

“Thomas Cole.”

Grace frowned.

“Who?”

“Your grandfather's firstborn son.”

Nathan stared.

“My uncle?”

Daniel nodded.

“The man everyone believed died before Richard inherited the company.”

Grace looked at the photograph.

“But he's alive.”

Daniel nodded.

“And if this photograph is recent…”

He checked the date.

His face went white.

“…he's been alive this entire time.”

Nathan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Powerful.

“Congratulations.”

Nathan immediately recognized it.

The voice from the recording.

Thomas Cole.

“You found the trust.”

Nathan tightened his grip.

“You murdered my grandfather.”

“No.”

“You ordered Richard.”

“I advised him.”

“You stole five years from my family.”

“No.”

Thomas paused.

“I gave you five years to discover the truth.”

Nathan froze.

“What does that mean?”

“You think Richard was fighting you.”

“He was.”

“He was protecting you.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“By kidnapping my daughter?”

Thomas's voice became colder.

“By keeping you alive.”

Grace stepped closer.

“What are you talking about?”

Thomas answered:

“Ask your father why he didn't kill you.”

Nathan's blood ran cold.

“My father isn't my father.”

Silence.

Then Thomas said:

“Now you're beginning to understand.”

The line went dead.

Nathan stood motionless.

Grace looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

Nathan didn't answer.

Because behind them, Lily was holding another envelope.

She handed it to him.

“Daddy.”

Nathan opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not Lily's.

His.

The name of his father had been blacked out.

And underneath it was a handwritten sentence:

Nathan Cole was never Richard Cole's biological son.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Grace stared at the document.

Margaret collapsed into a chair.

And from somewhere outside the mansion…

a car engine started.

The war over Lily had just become a war over Nathan's identity.

And for the first time, Nathan wondered whether the man he had spent his entire life calling Father

had ever been his father at all.
