Chapter 12 — The Father Who Finally Chose His Daughter

Chapter 12 — The Father Who Finally Chose His Daughter
Nathan read the sentence again.
Nathan Cole was never Richard Cole's biological son.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Lily tugged at his sleeve.
“Daddy?”
Nathan looked down.
Her eyes were full of innocent confusion.
She didn't understand trusts.
She didn't understand bloodlines.
She didn't understand billion-dollar empires or the men who had spent years manipulating her life.
She only understood one thing.
He was her father.
Nathan dropped to his knees.
He wrapped both arms around her.
“I've got you.”
Lily hugged him.
“You won't go away?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“No.”
His voice broke.
“Never.”
Richard's lawyers arrived less than an hour later.
They didn't come alone.
Three attorneys.
Two investigators.
A private security team.
And a judge's temporary order demanding access to Lily's medical and custody records.
Nathan stood at the front door.
“No.”
The lead attorney frowned.
“Mr. Cole, this is a lawful request.”
“You're not taking my daughter.”
“We aren't taking her.”
“You're trying to.”
The attorney lowered his voice.
“Your father has concerns about the child's legal status.”
Nathan almost laughed.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Nathan opened the door wider.
“Then tell Richard something.”
“What?”
“He can have the company.”
The attorneys exchanged glances.
Nathan's expression hardened.
“He can have the mansion.”
“The cars.”
“The shares.”
“The trust.”
“Everything.”
He looked toward Grace and Lily.
“But he will never have my daughter.”
Daniel arrived moments later.
He had heard what Nathan had said.
“You understand what you're giving up?”
Nathan nodded.
“Everything.”
“Potentially billions.”
“I know.”
“The trust.”
“I know.”
“The controlling shares.”
“I know.”
“Your inheritance.”
Nathan looked at Lily.
“It's already cost me five years.”
He turned toward Daniel.
“I'm not losing another day.”
Daniel was silent.
Then he nodded.
“Then we make it official.”
They entered the conference room.
Daniel placed a document before Nathan.
“What is this?”
“A voluntary renunciation.”
Nathan read it.
It would surrender his claim to the Cole inheritance.
His voting rights.
His future position in the company.
His right to certain trust distributions.
Everything Richard had spent decades training him to protect.
Nathan picked up the pen.
Grace stepped forward.
“Nathan.”
He looked at her.
“You don't have to do this.”
“Yes.”
“You could lose everything.”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“I already know what it feels like to have everything and still lose the person I love.”
He looked at Lily.
“I'm not making that mistake twice.”
He signed.
The document was released publicly.
Within an hour, the business world erupted.
NATHAN COLE RENOUNCES COLE FAMILY INHERITANCE.
HEIR WALKS AWAY FROM BILLION-DOLLAR FORTUNE.
COLE SUCCESSION CRISIS DEEPENS.
Richard saw the headlines from his hospital room.
His face went pale.
“He did what?”
Martin stood beside him.
“He signed away his inheritance.”
Richard stared at the screen.
“He wouldn't.”
“He did.”
“Why?”
Martin hesitated.
“Because of the girl.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Lily.”
“Yes.”
Richard turned toward the window.
For the first time, something like genuine panic appeared in his eyes.
“If Nathan doesn't care about the money…”
Martin asked:
“What?”
Richard whispered:
“Then I have nothing left to control him with.”
That evening, Nathan went to see Richard.
Alone.
No lawyers.
No security.
Just father and son.
Richard looked at him.
“You're making a mistake.”
Nathan pulled a chair across from the bed.
“No.”
“You threw away your inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“For her.”
“Yes.”
Richard laughed.
“You think a child will appreciate what you've sacrificed?”
Nathan stared at him.
“She doesn't have to.”
“You're throwing away your future.”
“No.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“I've spent my entire life protecting your future.”
Richard's expression changed.
“Everything I did was for you.”
“You destroyed Grace.”
“I protected the family.”
“You stole my daughter.”
“I protected the family.”
“You manipulated Victoria.”
“I protected the family.”
“You controlled my life.”
Richard's voice rose.
“Because you were weak!”
Nathan stood.
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“You needed me to be weak.”
Richard stared at him.
Nathan continued.
“You taught me that love was a weakness.”
“You taught me obedience was loyalty.”
“You taught me money was power.”
“And I believed you.”
He looked toward the door.
“Until Lily.”
Richard said nothing.
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
“She doesn't care how much money I have.”
“She doesn't care what my last name is.”
“She just wants her father.”
He paused.
“And for the first time in my life…”
“I choose her.”
Richard's face hardened.
“You'll come back.”
“No.”
“You'll lose everything.”
“I've already signed it away.”
“You'll regret it.”
Nathan looked at him.
“The only thing I regret is believing you for so long.”
He turned to leave.
Richard suddenly said:
“Nathan.”
Nathan stopped.
Richard's voice was different now.
Almost desperate.
“I'm your father.”
Nathan slowly turned.
“No.”
Richard froze.
“You were the man who raised me.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“But you never earned the right to be called my father.”
Then he walked away.
Outside the hospital, Grace was waiting.
Nathan approached her.
“How did it go?”
“It's over.”
She looked at him.
“Did he say anything?”
“He said he'd always be my father.”
Grace took his hand.
“And what did you say?”
Nathan smiled sadly.
“I told him he was wrong.”
Grace leaned against him.
Lily was asleep in the back seat.
For a moment, everything was peaceful.
Then Nathan noticed Grace's expression.
“What?”
She hesitated.
“You didn't need to give up everything.”
“I know.”
“Why did you?”
Nathan looked at Lily.
“Because I needed her to know that nobody comes before her.”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“She already knows.”
Nathan looked at her.
“How?”
“She calls you Daddy.”
The next morning, the Cole board held an emergency meeting.
Richard's control was collapsing.
Nathan had resigned.
Margaret had withdrawn her support.
Victoria had provided evidence.
Edward had disappeared.
And the Miller trust had activated its protection clause.
The board members were terrified.
They demanded a new leader.
Then Grace entered the room.
Everyone turned.
The former maid stood at the end of the table.
No uniform.
No lowered eyes.
No fear.
Daniel walked behind her.
Grace placed one folder on the table.
“My name is Grace Miller.”
Several executives exchanged glances.
Daniel spoke.
“She controls twenty-two percent of the voting structure.”
A board member stood.
“That's impossible.”
Grace smiled.
“No.”
She opened the folder.
“It's documented.”
The boardroom fell silent.
Grace continued.
“I don't want this company.”
A director laughed.
“You control enough shares to take it.”
“I don't want it.”
“Then why are you here?”
Grace looked at Nathan.
“Because my daughter deserves a future that isn't controlled by people who see her as an asset.”
She placed another document on the table.
“I am activating the protective provisions of the Miller-Cole trust.”
The company's general counsel went pale.
“You can't.”
“I can.”
“Richard is still the acting trustee.”
“Not anymore.”
Daniel placed the court order beside her.
“The emergency trustee provision has been activated.”
The board members stared.
Grace looked around the room.
“No one will use Lily again.”
Then the doors opened.
Margaret entered.
She walked slowly to the table.
“I support Grace.”
The board erupted in whispers.
Margaret looked at them.
“For years, I remained silent.”
She placed her resignation letter on the table.
“Today, I resign from every position controlled by Richard.”
Grace looked at her.
Margaret continued:
“And I will testify against my husband.”
Nathan stared.
“Mom.”
Margaret looked at him.
“I should have chosen you years ago.”
Nathan approached her.
“You're choosing now.”
She began crying.
“Is it too late?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He hugged her.
But Richard wasn't finished.
That afternoon, a new lawsuit was filed.
This time against Grace.
Richard accused her of fraud.
The lawsuit claimed Grace had manipulated the Miller trust.
That she had concealed assets.
That Lily's inheritance was based on fabricated documents.
And worst of all…
Richard claimed Grace had kidnapped Lily.
Nathan read the complaint.
His expression hardened.
“He's trying to destroy her.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Can he?”
“Not if we prove the truth.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
She was holding Lily.
“I won't let him.”
The trial became national news.
Every secret came out.
The intercepted letters.
The hospital records.
The recordings.
The surveillance.
The custody plan.
The trust.
The payments.
Victoria testified.
Margaret testified.
Helen testified.
Even former Cole employees came forward.
One by one, Richard's story collapsed.
But the final witness was Nathan.
He took the stand.
The courtroom became silent.
Richard watched from across the room.
The attorney asked:
“Mr. Cole, why did you renounce your inheritance?”
Nathan looked toward Lily.
“Because money isn't my daughter.”
“Did your father threaten you?”
“Yes.”
“Did he attempt to control your relationship with Grace?”
“Yes.”
“Did he attempt to obtain custody of Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Nathan paused.
“Because he believed controlling my daughter meant controlling me.”
The attorney asked:
“And what do you believe?”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“I believe my daughter is a person.”
The courtroom was silent.
“She isn't property.”
“She isn't an inheritance.”
“She isn't leverage.”
“She is Lily.”
“And she is my daughter.”
Richard was later called to testify.
His attorney tried to protect him.
But the evidence was overwhelming.
The judge asked:
“Did you instruct Victoria to help separate Nathan and Grace?”
Richard remained silent.
“Did you attempt to interfere with Lily's custody?”
Silence.
“Did you know the child was Nathan Cole's biological daughter?”
Richard looked toward Nathan.
“Yes.”
The courtroom erupted.
The judge demanded silence.
Richard continued.
“I knew.”
Grace closed her eyes.
Nathan's hands tightened.
“Why?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because she was going to destroy everything.”
Nathan asked:
“How?”
Richard answered:
“By inheriting it.”
The judge frowned.
“You mean the trust?”
Richard nodded.
“The Miller trust.”
Nathan finally understood.
Richard had never feared losing money.
He had feared losing control.
The verdict came three weeks later.
Richard lost.
The court recognized Lily as Nathan's biological daughter.
Grace retained primary custody.
Nathan received full parental rights.
Richard was permanently prohibited from contacting Lily.
The fraudulent financial transfers were referred for prosecution.
The trust was placed under independent protection.
And the Cole inheritance was no longer controlled by Richard.
Nathan had walked away from the fortune.
But he had gained something Richard could never take.
His family.
Months later, Nathan and Grace moved into a smaller house.
No marble halls.
No private guards.
No enormous ballroom.
Just a garden.
A kitchen.
A little bedroom painted by Lily herself.
One morning, Nathan stood outside while Lily played.
Grace joined him.
“You miss it?”
“What?”
“The mansion.”
Nathan smiled.
“Sometimes.”
Grace looked surprised.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
He watched Lily run through the grass.
“But then I remember why I left.”
Grace leaned against him.
“You didn't lose your family.”
Nathan took her hand.
“I finally chose it.”
Lily ran toward them.
“Daddy!”
Nathan crouched.
She jumped into his arms.
“Mommy!”
Grace hugged them both.
For a moment, the three of them stood together.
No Richard.
No lawyers.
No secrets.
No fear.
Then Lily looked at Nathan.
“Are we rich?”
Nathan laughed.
Grace smiled.
“No, sweetheart.”
Lily frowned.
“Are we poor?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
“What are we?”
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then at his daughter.
“We're free.”
Lily seemed satisfied.
“Okay.”
She ran back into the garden.
Grace watched her.
“She understands more than we think.”
Nathan smiled.
“She always has.”
That evening, Nathan received one final envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph.
Richard.
Edward.
Thomas.
And a fourth man.
Nathan recognized him immediately.
His biological father.
The man whose name had been erased from Nathan's birth certificate.
On the back were six words:
He wants to meet his son.
Nathan stared at the photograph.
Grace stepped beside him.
“What is it?”
Nathan handed it to her.
She looked at the face.
Then at him.
“Who is he?”
Nathan's voice was quiet.
“I don't know.”
Grace looked toward Lily's bedroom.
“Will you meet him?”
Nathan folded the photograph.
“I don't know.”
He looked at his family.
“But whatever happens…”
He took Grace's hand.
“I won't let anyone choose my life for me again.”
Outside, Lily laughed.
Nathan smiled.
The empire could wait.
The secrets could wait.
For the first time in his life…
May you like
Nathan had chosen his daughter.
And nothing in the world could make him give her up.
