Chapter 8 — The Recording Nathan Was Never Meant to Hear

Chapter 8 — The Recording Nathan Was Never Meant to Hear
The message on Victoria's phone remained open.
Richard was only following orders.
Nathan read it twice.
Then a third time.
His expression hardened.
“Who sent that?”
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Show me.”
She handed him the phone.
The photograph of Lily filled the screen.
Nathan's stomach turned.
The picture had been taken inside the farmhouse.
The curtains were unmistakable.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone had entered the place where Grace had spent years hiding.
And whoever had taken the photograph knew exactly where Lily was.
Nathan looked at Victoria.
“You said you copied everything from Richard's files.”
“Yes.”
“Did you find anything about whoever gave him orders?”
Victoria hesitated.
“No.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
She looked frightened.
“I found something else.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
The recording was hidden inside an old digital recorder.
Victoria had discovered it in Richard's private office.
She hadn't listened to the entire thing.
She had been too afraid.
But she had recognized two voices.
Richard.
And herself.
Five years earlier.
Nathan stared at the recorder.
“You never heard this?”
“Not all of it.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard walked into the room while I was copying the files.”
Victoria swallowed.
“I took it anyway.”
Nathan pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Richard's voice emerged.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“You understand what happens if you refuse.”
Victoria's younger voice answered.
“I understand what you promised me.”
Nathan froze.
Grace stepped closer.
The recording continued.
Five years earlier.
Richard's office.
Victoria sat across from him.
Her hands were trembling.
“You told me Grace was leaving.”
“She will.”
“You said Nathan would forget her.”
“He will.”
“You said the baby wouldn't be involved.”
Richard paused.
“That depends.”
Victoria frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“The child is useful.”
Victoria's voice became nervous.
“Useful for what?”
“You don't need to know.”
“She is a baby.”
“I know.”
“She has nothing to do with this.”
Richard's voice became colder.
“Everything has something to do with this.”
Nathan stopped the recording.
He stared at Victoria.
“What did he mean?”
“I don't know.”
“Play it.”
Victoria hesitated.
Nathan pressed the button.
Richard's voice returned.
“Nathan has become difficult.”
Victoria answered:
“Because he loves Grace.”
“Exactly.”
“Then separate them.”
“I'm already doing it.”
“What about Lily?”
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“Lily changes everything.”
Victoria asked:
“How?”
Richard's voice dropped.
“Because the child has something Nathan doesn't.”
Victoria whispered:
“What?”
Richard replied:
“Blood.”
The recording crackled.
Then:
“If Nathan remains independent, Lily becomes his greatest weakness.”
“I don't understand.”
“You don't have to.”
Nathan stopped the recording again.
Grace looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“I don't know.”
Victoria spoke quietly.
“Maybe Richard knew something about Lily's inheritance.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“My father never talked about blood that way.”
Grace looked at the recorder.
“Then keep listening.”
Nathan pressed play.
Richard's voice:
“You will marry Nathan.”
Victoria:
“What if he refuses?”
Richard:
“He won't.”
Victoria:
“And Grace?”
Richard:
“She will disappear.”
Victoria:
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
Richard:
“I won't.”
Victoria:
“What about the baby?”
A long silence.
Then:
“The baby will be taken.”
Victoria gasped.
“No.”
“Don't make this difficult.”
“You said she would be safe.”
“She will be safe.”
“With whom?”
Richard:
“People who understand what she is.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Nathan's face turned white.
“What she is?”
Victoria nodded.
“That was the part I never understood.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You heard this before?”
“Only once.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
“I was terrified.”
Nathan looked back at the recorder.
He pressed play.
Victoria's younger voice was shaking.
“I won't help you take her.”
Richard:
“Then I'll destroy your family.”
“You can't.”
“Your father's debt is already mine.”
Silence.
“Your brother's legal problems can disappear.”
Silence.
“Your mother's medical bills can be paid.”
Victoria began crying.
“You're blackmailing me.”
Richard:
“I'm giving you a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Your family survives.”
A pause.
“Or Grace does.”
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
Then she whispered:
“What do you want me to do?”
Richard answered:
“Make Nathan believe she betrayed him.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Victoria was crying.
Grace stared at her.
“You knew.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
“You helped him.”
“Yes.”
“You let him destroy my life.”
Victoria lowered her head.
“Yes.”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“But you didn't know what he planned for Lily.”
“No.”
Nathan looked at Victoria.
“Did you ever ask?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“That Lily would be protected.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Nathan stood.
He walked to the window.
Five years.
Five years of lies.
He had believed Grace abandoned him.
He had blamed her.
He had rebuilt his life around a lie.
And the recording proved something worse.
Richard hadn't simply destroyed their relationship.
He had planned it.
Every conversation.
Every rumor.
Every missing message.
Every false story.
Everything.
Nathan turned.
“Where did he get my messages?”
Victoria looked at him.
“What?”
“My messages to Grace.”
“You said you never received her letters.”
“I didn't.”
“But did she ever receive yours?”
Nathan froze.
“No.”
Victoria's eyes widened.
“Then Richard intercepted both sides.”
Grace whispered:
“He made us believe neither of us cared.”
Nathan nodded.
“He made us hate each other.”
Victoria suddenly remembered something.
“There was a server.”
Nathan turned.
“What server?”
“In Richard's office.”
“Where?”
“Behind the fireplace.”
Nathan immediately moved.
He searched the wall.
Nothing.
Grace helped him.
Then Nathan noticed a small metal plate.
He removed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a hard drive.
Nathan stared.
Victoria whispered:
“That wasn't there when I left.”
Grace looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because I found the compartment.”
“What was inside?”
“Nothing.”
Nathan picked up the drive.
“It isn't empty.”
They connected it to a laptop.
Folders appeared.
Hundreds.
NATHAN
GRACE
VICTORIA
LILY
MARGARET
And one folder labeled:
PROJECT HEIR
Nathan opened it.
A password was required.
Victoria tried Richard's birthday.
Wrong.
Nathan tried his own.
Wrong.
Grace tried Lily's birth date.
Wrong.
Then Margaret stepped forward.
“Try the day Nathan was born.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Richard used to say that was the day his greatest investment was created.”
Nathan entered the date.
The folder opened.
Everyone went silent.
Inside were documents.
Nathan's childhood.
School records.
Medical records.
Psychological evaluations.
Private conversations.
Everything.
He scrolled.
Then found a file labeled:
BEHAVIORAL CONDITIONING
Nathan frowned.
“What is this?”
Victoria stepped closer.
“I don't know.”
He opened it.
The document described methods used to influence Nathan's decisions.
Rewards.
Punishments.
Isolation.
Financial control.
Emotional manipulation.
Grace read over his shoulder.
“They were controlling you.”
Nathan stared.
“My whole life.”
Margaret began crying.
“I didn't know.”
Nathan turned toward her.
“You knew enough.”
She looked down.
“I knew your father was strict.”
“You knew he controlled my money.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he controlled my career.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he chose my friends.”
Margaret cried.
“I thought he was protecting you.”
Nathan's voice cracked.
“He wasn't.”
Then Grace noticed something.
A folder beneath the behavioral reports.
MATERNAL SEPARATION PROTOCOL
She opened it.
Inside was a timeline.
Day -30: monitor Grace.
Day -14: isolate Nathan.
Day -7: intercept communications.
Day 0: hospital intervention.
Day +1: child transfer.
Day +3: falsify records.
Day +7: begin replacement relationship.
Victoria covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Nathan stared.
“Replacement relationship.”
Victoria whispered:
“Me.”
Nathan's eyes filled with anger.
“You weren't his daughter-in-law.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I was part of the protocol.”
He opened another file.
There was a photograph of Victoria.
A profile.
Her psychological traits.
Her weaknesses.
Her family debts.
Everything Richard had used against her.
Victoria stared at the screen.
“He studied me.”
Nathan nodded.
“He selected you.”
Victoria began crying.
“I thought I chose him.”
“You didn't.”
Then Nathan found another folder.
AUTHORITY
The folder contained one audio file.
No date.
No label.
Nathan clicked it.
A man's voice filled the room.
Not Richard.
Not Martin.
Someone older.
Someone calm.
Someone Nathan had never heard before.
“Richard is becoming emotional.”
Richard answered:
“He will obey.”
The unknown man said:
“He has already failed once.”
Richard:
“Nathan will never know.”
Unknown man:
“He must not.”
Richard:
“And the girl?”
Unknown:
“The girl is the contingency.”
Nathan stopped breathing.
Grace gripped his hand.
The unknown voice continued.
“If Nathan becomes uncontrollable, Lily becomes the leverage.”
Richard:
“Understood.”
Unknown:
“And if Grace returns?”
Richard:
“She won't.”
Unknown:
“Make certain.”
The recording ended.
Nathan stared at the screen.
“Who was that?”
Victoria shook her head.
“I've never heard his voice.”
Margaret looked terrified.
Then she whispered:
“I have.”
Everyone turned.
“Who?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Your grandfather.”
Nathan froze.
“My grandfather died twenty years ago.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Not him.”
She looked at the recording.
“Your father's older brother.”
Nathan's face went pale.
“Uncle Edward?”
“Yes.”
“But he died before I was born.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“He didn't.”
Silence.
“He disappeared.”
Nathan stared.
“Where is he?”
Margaret whispered:
“I don't know.”
Then the lights went out.
Grace grabbed Lily.
Nathan reached for his phone.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone entered the house.
Victoria whispered:
“They found us.”
Nathan motioned for everyone to stay quiet.
The footsteps stopped outside the library.
A man's voice came through the door.
“You shouldn't have listened to that recording.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Edward?”
Silence.
Then the voice answered.
“Good.”
Nathan's heart pounded.
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Elegant.
Calm.
Nathan stared.
He knew the face.
Not from memory.
From photographs.
His grandfather's old albums.
The man who had supposedly died decades ago.
Edward Cole.
Nathan whispered:
“You're alive.”
Edward smiled.
“Unfortunately for your father…”
He looked toward the computer.
“…I am.”
Richard's voice came through the recording again.
“If Nathan becomes uncontrollable, Lily becomes the leverage.”
Edward looked at Lily.
His expression softened.
“She was never supposed to be harmed.”
Grace stepped in front of her daughter.
“Then why did you let them take her?”
Edward looked at Grace.
“Because your daughter was the only person capable of saving this family.”
Nathan stared.
“Saving it from what?”
Edward's expression darkened.
“From Richard.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You're the one who gave him orders.”
Edward's eyes hardened.
“Five years ago, yes.”
“And now?”
Edward looked at Victoria.
“Now I want to correct my mistake.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“After five years?”
Edward said nothing.
Nathan stepped toward him.
“You destroyed my family.”
Edward nodded.
“Yes.”
“You manipulated my father.”
“Yes.”
“You ordered Grace's disappearance.”
“Yes.”
“You used Lily.”
Edward lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Nathan's voice broke.
“Why?”
Edward looked at him.
“Because your father discovered the truth about our family.”
“What truth?”
Edward took a breath.
“Your family empire was never built by Richard.”
Nathan stared.
“It was built on a secret.”
“What secret?”
Edward looked at Lily.
Then at Grace.
Finally at Nathan.
“The Cole family fortune belongs to someone else.”
Nathan froze.
“Who?”
Edward smiled sadly.
“Your mother.”
Margaret gasped.
Nathan turned toward her.
“What?”
Margaret began crying.
Edward continued:
“Your mother inherited the original fortune.”
“Richard took control of it.”
“And everything he built afterward…”
He looked at Nathan.
“…was built using money that was never his.”
Nathan stood speechless.
Edward took out a small envelope.
He handed it to him.
“Your mother has the original documents.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Margaret.
A much younger woman.
Standing beside a man Nathan didn't recognize.
On the back was written:
The woman who owned the empire before Richard stole it.
Nathan looked at his mother.
She was crying.
“I'm sorry.”
Nathan whispered:
“For what?”
Margaret looked at him.
“For letting your father steal my life…”
She looked at Grace.
“…and yours.”
Then Lily stepped forward.
She looked at Nathan.
“Daddy?”
Nathan immediately knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are we going home?”
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then at Victoria.
Then at his mother.
Finally, he looked at Edward.
He knew the answer.
But he also knew something else.
The fight wasn't over.
Not even close.
He picked Lily up.
“We're going home.”
Edward watched them leave.
But before Nathan reached the door, Edward spoke.
“One warning.”
Nathan stopped.
“Your father isn't the most dangerous person in this story.”
Nathan turned.
“Who is?”
Edward looked toward the darkness outside.
“The person who ordered me.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Who?”
Edward's face became pale.
“I don't know.”
Nathan stared.
Edward whispered:
“And that's the person who has been watching Lily.”
Outside the mansion, a black car waited across the road.
Inside it, someone watched the family leave.
A phone rang.
The person answered.
Edward's voice came through another line:
“They know.”
The unknown caller was silent.
Then:
“Good.”
May you like
“It's time.”
And the call ended.
