CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO BOUGHT SILENCE

CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO BOUGHT SILENCE
“Damien Mercer!”
His mother pushed through the crowd like she owned the air itself. Expensive heels, perfect posture, panic hidden beneath control that was starting to fracture.
Her eyes landed on me first.
Then the boys.
Everything in her face collapsed for half a second before she rebuilt it.
“No,” she whispered. “This cannot be happening.”
Ethan hid slightly behind my leg. Noah stared openly, curious but cautious.
Damien looked between them and her like he was watching two timelines collide.
“What did you do?” he asked his mother, voice low.
She ignored him.
She looked at me instead.
“You were supposed to be gone,” she said sharply. “I made sure of it.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Confirmation.
My grip tightened on my sons’ hands.
“I never agreed to disappear,” I said calmly.
Her lips curled.
“You took the money.”
A few nearby shoppers slowed. Phones came out. Something was happening now—something messy.
I shook my head once.
“I took nothing from you,” I said. “You sent lawyers. Threats. Contracts. You tried to erase a pregnancy like it was an inconvenience.”
Damien’s head snapped toward her.
“Erase?” he repeated.
His mother exhaled sharply, like she could still control the narrative if she spoke fast enough.
“She was unstable. She would have ruined everything. Our family, our reputation—”
Damien stepped forward.
“Answer me,” he said. “What did you do?”
May you like
Silence.
And in that silence, five years of buried truth began to rise.
