The boys shifted, sensing the tension.

Noah tugged my sleeve.

“Mom… are we okay?”

I knelt instantly, smoothing Ethan’s hair, forcing my voice steady.

“We’re okay,” I said softly. “Nothing is changing for you.”

But behind me, Damien stepped closer.

“Tell me,” he said again, voice breaking slightly now. “Are they mine?”

The question wasn’t just biology.

It was consequence.

I stood slowly.

And for the first time in five years, I looked directly at the man who had once chosen an envelope over a family.

“Yes,” I said.

One word.

No decoration.

No mercy.

It hit him like impact.

Damien staggered back half a step, as if the answer physically struck him.

His mother went pale.

“You don’t understand—” she started again.

But Damien cut her off without looking at her.

“You tried to erase my children,” he said quietly.

Not a question.

A verdict.

And in that moment, something inside him shifted.

Not into anger.

Into resolve.

Because whatever empire he had built…

It suddenly didn’t matter as much as what had been stolen from him.

And somewhere deep in the crowd, a camera flashed.

Too late.

The story was already out.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, the message included an attachment.

A file name:

MERCER SETTLEMENT — SEALED

And below it, another message:

“They paid to bury you. I kept the receipt.”

I looked up.

Damien was watching me.

His mother was watching both of us.

And for the first time, none of them were in control of what came next.

Because some truths don’t stay hidden forever.

They wait.
