CHAPTER 3: THE FILE THAT NEVER DIED

CHAPTER 3: THE FILE THAT NEVER DIED
I finally turned—not to Damien, but to her.
“I left because I chose peace,” I said. “Not because you bought it.”
Her face tightened.
“You think you can just walk back in and—”
“I didn’t walk back in,” I interrupted. “You did. Every time you checked on them. Every time you paid for surveillance you thought I didn’t notice.”
Damien froze.
“Surveillance?” he echoed.
His mother’s composure cracked.
“That’s not what this is—”
But I kept going.
“You didn’t just try to erase me,” I said. “You documented it.”
The air shifted.
Damien’s voice dropped dangerously quiet.
“Documented what?”
For the first time, his mother looked afraid.
Not of me.
Of him.
“Damien,” she said carefully, “this is not the place—”
“The place is exactly here,” he snapped.
I looked at her one last time.
“You spent two million trying to bury the maternity records,” I said. “But you forgot something important.”
A pause.
“She kept copies.”
Her eyes widened instantly.
“No—”
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
A message.
Unknown number.
One line:
“If you’re ready, I can send everything.”
My breath slowed.
So she was still alive.
Still watching.
Still holding the truth Damien’s mother had tried to bury.
Damien saw my expression change.
“What is it?” he demanded.
I didn’t answer.
Not yet.

Because truth, once unleashed, doesn’t belong to the person who carries it.
It belongs to the damage it causes.
