Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Veil

Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Veil

The silence after the child’s final words was unbearable.

Even the distant celebration downstairs had faded into something hollow, as if the mansion itself had realized the wedding was no longer a celebration—but a collapse.

Adrian stood completely still.

“Mommy’s gone…” his son had said. “So I don’t matter anymore.”

Those words didn’t just hurt. They rewrote everything he thought he knew.

The bride let out a sharp breath. “He’s exaggerating. Children say things when they’re upset—”

“Stop.” Adrian’s voice cut through hers instantly.

It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.

For the first time that night, she hesitated.

Lena adjusted her hold on the boy, who was now buried in her shoulder, refusing to look up.

Adrian took a step forward.

“You didn’t just scare him,” he said slowly. “You taught him he was replaceable.”

The bride’s expression tightened. “I was trying to discipline—”

“That is not discipline,” Adrian snapped.

A heavy silence followed.

Then Lena spoke quietly, almost afraid of the weight of her own words.

“He stopped eating when you were around.”

Adrian turned slightly toward her.

Lena continued. “He started asking if he could stay in his room… even when no one told him to.”

The realization didn’t come all at once.

It came in pieces—each one sharp enough to cut deeper than the last.
