Chapter 3: What Remains After
By dawn, the mansion was empty.
No music. No guests. No white flowers carefully arranged for a celebration that never truly existed.
Only silence.
Adrian stood by the window of his son’s room, watching the boy sleep for the first time in what felt like days. Lena sat nearby, reading softly to him until his breathing finally steadied.
The bride was gone.
So was the illusion of the life he had tried to build overnight.
Lena closed the book gently and stood.
“You didn’t just save him tonight,” she said softly.
Adrian didn’t respond immediately.
Because he knew the truth was heavier than that.
He had failed his son long before the locked door.
He just hadn’t known it yet.
Outside, the first light of morning spread across the estate, washing away the remnants of the wedding like it had never happened.
But inside the house, something new had begun.
Not happiness.
Not healing yet.

But truth.
And for the first time, that was enough.
