Chapter 11

Chapter 11
The Birthday Video (Full Version)
The phone call came at exactly 8:17 a.m.
Daniel had just finished packing Lily's lunch when his cellphone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
He hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
A man's voice, low and cautious, spoke on the other end.
"If you still want the truth..."
Daniel straightened immediately.
"Who is this?"
"I don't have much time."
"The video you're looking for still exists."
Daniel's heart skipped a beat.
"What video?"
"The birthday party."
"The complete recording."
Silence.
Then the man added,
"The one the internet was never allowed to see."
The line went dead.
For several seconds, Daniel simply stared at his phone.
The full recording.
The thirty-second clip that had destroyed his reputation had never shown what happened before Margaret confronted him.
Someone had deliberately cut it.
If the original still existed...
Everything could change.
Emma arrived twenty minutes later after Daniel called her.
She found him standing beside the kitchen table.
"I got a call."
"What kind of call?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"The full birthday video still exists."
Emma's eyes widened.
"The original?"
He nodded.
She whispered,
"If that's true..."
"...everyone has been judging you for a lie."
Rachel joined them an hour later.
She listened carefully before saying,
"I might know who recorded it."
Daniel looked at her.
"The man with the baseball cap?"
Rachel nodded.
"I saw him leave through the catering entrance."
"There was a company logo on the delivery van."
She searched her memory.
"Silver Oak Events."
Daniel immediately searched online.
The company still existed.
Two hours later...
Daniel and Emma arrived at the Silver Oak Events warehouse.
The manager greeted them politely.
"We handled the catering."
Daniel placed his business card on the desk.
"I'm looking for one of your temporary contractors."
He showed a screenshot taken from the viral video.
The manager frowned.
"I know him."
"His name is Victor."
"Does he still work here?"
"No."
"He quit three days after that party."
Daniel exchanged a look with Emma.
"Do you know where we can find him?"
The manager hesitated.
"He left without notice."
"But..."
He opened an employee file.
"This is the emergency contact address he provided."
An hour later...
Daniel knocked on the apartment door.
No answer.
He knocked again.
Still nothing.
Just as they were about to leave, the elderly woman from the neighboring apartment opened her door.
"Are you looking for Victor?"
"Yes."
She sighed.
"You're too late."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He moved out yesterday."
Emma's shoulders fell.
"Did he leave anything?"
The woman thought for a moment.
"He told me..."
"...that someone might come looking."
She disappeared inside her apartment.
Moments later she returned carrying a small envelope.
"He asked me to give this only to a man named Daniel."
Daniel carefully opened it.
Inside was a memory card.
And a handwritten note.
I couldn't live with what I did.
This is the original recording.
I'm sorry.
Emma looked at him.
Neither of them spoke.
Back at Daniel's apartment...
They inserted the memory card into his laptop.
A single file appeared.
Birthday_Final.mp4
Length:
18 minutes, 42 seconds.
Daniel took a deep breath.
Then pressed Play.
The recording began outside the mansion.
Victor had started filming long before Daniel arrived.
Guests laughed.
Children played in the garden.
Everything appeared peaceful.
Then...
Margaret walked toward Victor.
The audio was perfectly clear.
"Remember."
She handed him an envelope.
"You only start filming when I walk toward him."
Victor asked,
"And before that?"
"You delete it."
Daniel looked at Emma.
She slowly covered her mouth.
Minutes later...
Daniel's car pulled into the driveway.
Before he even reached the front door...
Margaret quietly positioned herself near the entrance.
The camera remained lowered.
Not recording.
Exactly as instructed.
Then...
Victor raised the phone.
The recording timestamp matched the beginning of the viral clip.
Except this version kept going.
For the first time...
Daniel and Emma watched everything the public had never seen.
Margaret stepped directly into Daniel's path.
"You shouldn't have come."
Daniel answered calmly.
"Lily was invited."
"No."
"You were not."
Daniel looked confused.
"We received an invitation."
Margaret smiled coldly.
"Then someone made a mistake."
Emma closed her eyes.
"It wasn't a mistake."
The argument continued.
Margaret raised her voice first.
She pointed at Daniel.
Accused him of ruining Emma's life.
Several guests looked uncomfortable.
Daniel remained remarkably calm.
Over and over he tried to end the conversation.
"We're here for the children."
"Let's not do this today."
"Please lower your voice."
None of those moments had appeared online.
Then came the moment everyone remembered.
Daniel quietly said,
"No."
He picked up Lily.
Turned toward the door.
And left.
But the recording didn't stop there.
Victor followed them outside.
Hidden behind a hedge.
Daniel placed Lily gently into the car.
He knelt beside her.
The microphone captured every word.
"Lily..."
"I'm sorry."
"You didn't deserve that."
Little Lily looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
"Did Grandma stop loving us?"
Daniel hugged her.
"No."
"Sometimes grown-ups become angry."
"But that isn't your fault."
Then...
He wiped her tears.
"I'll always protect you."
The camera shook slightly.
Victor whispered under his breath,
"Oh God..."
Inside the mansion...
The recording continued.
Victor accidentally left the camera running as he returned through the back entrance.
Margaret approached him immediately.
"Did you get it?"
Victor nodded weakly.
"Yes."
"Good."
"Make sure it starts when he says no."
"What about the rest?"
Margaret smiled.
"No one needs to see the rest."
Then she handed Victor another envelope.
The video ended.
Silence filled Daniel's apartment.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Emma was crying openly.
Rachel wiped tears from her own face.
Daniel simply stared at the frozen final frame.
Years of humiliation.
Destroyed by eighteen minutes of truth.
Emma finally whispered,
"My mother..."
Daniel gently interrupted her.
"This wasn't only her."
Emma nodded slowly.
"The woman in the sunglasses."
"Camille."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You know her name?"
Emma swallowed.
"I remembered."
"She was introduced to me once."
"As a family consultant."
Daniel frowned.
"When?"
Emma closed her eyes.
"About two years before we separated."
"I only met her once."
"But afterward..."
"My mother kept mentioning her advice."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"So Camille wasn't just helping Margaret."
Emma nodded.
"I think..."
"...she was teaching her."
Just then, Daniel's laptop chimed.
A new email had arrived.
No sender's name.
No subject.
Only one attachment.
Security_Footage.mp4
And a single sentence in the message body:
The birthday was only the beginning.
Watch what happened six months before Emma left.
Daniel looked at Emma.
Emma looked back at him.
Neither reached for the mouse.
Because if the birthday video had shattered everything they believed...

What waited inside the next recording might destroy what little remained.
