Chapter 4

Chapter 4
The Birthday Invitation
The envelope had looked ordinary.
Cream-colored.
Embossed with golden lettering.
Tied with a pale pink ribbon that matched the birthday decorations now sitting forgotten in trash bags outside the Henderson mansion.
Yet that single envelope had started a chain of events that no one could undo.
Because the invitation Daniel Carter had received...
Was never supposed to reach him.
Three Days Before the Party...
Daniel was helping Lily finish her homework when someone knocked on the apartment door.
"I'll get it!" Lily shouted.
She hurried across the living room, still holding a purple crayon in one hand.
When Daniel opened the door, a young courier stood outside.
"Package for Mr. Daniel Carter."
Daniel signed the electronic receipt.
The courier smiled politely before leaving.
Lily immediately bounced on her toes.
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
She watched impatiently as Daniel untied the ribbon.
Inside was a beautifully designed birthday invitation.
You are warmly invited to celebrate Sophie's 7th Birthday.
Saturday, 5:00 PM
The Henderson Estate
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Lily, Sophie can't wait to celebrate with her favorite cousin.
No signature.
Just those words.
Lily squealed with excitement.
"Sophie remembered me!"
She threw her arms around Daniel's waist.
"Can we go?"
Daniel hesitated.
The Henderson Estate.
Emma would be there.
Margaret would be there.
It would be the first family gathering since the separation.
He looked down at Lily.
Her eyes sparkled with hope.
"When was the last time you played with Sophie?"
Lily counted on her fingers.
"I don't know..."
"A long time."
Daniel smiled gently.
"Then we'll go."
Lily hugged him so tightly that he almost lost his balance.
"I'll make her the best birthday card ever!"
The next two days became a whirlwind of childish excitement.
Lily carefully chose wrapping paper covered with tiny unicorns.
She insisted on spending her allowance to buy Sophie a friendship bracelet.
"It's pink," she explained proudly.
"Pink is her favorite."
Daniel added a small storybook to the gift.
He knew Sophie loved bedtime stories.
Watching Lily prepare reminded him how simple children kept life.
There were no grudges.
No lawyers.
No pride.
Only love.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Emma stood in the Henderson kitchen helping arrange party favors.
Colorful balloons covered every countertop.
Gift bags lined the dining room table.
Everything seemed ready.
Then Emma glanced at the guest list.
Her smile disappeared.
She read it again.
Daniel Carter.
Lily Carter.
Emma frowned.
She picked up the list and walked into her mother's study.
"Mom?"
Margaret barely looked up from her tablet.
"Yes?"
"Did you invite Daniel?"
Margaret answered without hesitation.
"No."
Emma blinked.
"His name is on the guest list."
Margaret reached for the list.
Her expression changed for only a fraction of a second.
Then she smiled.
"It must be a mistake."
Emma frowned.
"What kind of mistake?"
"The event planner probably copied an old family list."
"I'll have it corrected."
Emma nodded slowly.
"Should I call Daniel?"
Margaret stood.
"No."
"It isn't necessary."
Emma looked uncertain.
"But if he already received—"
"He won't come."
Margaret's voice was calm.
"Pride won't let him."
Emma wanted to believe her.
So she did.
Later that afternoon...
Margaret quietly stepped into the garden where a man waited beside a catering truck.
He wore a baseball cap pulled low over his face.
The same man who had secretly recorded the confrontation.
Margaret handed him a thick envelope.
"You know what to do."
The man looked inside.
Several thousand dollars.
"Easy enough."
"And remember."
She fixed him with a sharp look.
"I only want the part after I approach him."
He nodded.
"No problem."
"What about before?"
"There is no before."
He smiled.
"I'll start recording exactly when you tell me."
Margaret smiled back.
"Good."
The day before the party...
Rachel arrived early to help decorate.
While searching for extra candles in the pantry, she overheard Margaret speaking on the phone.
"...yes, he'll come."
Rachel froze.
She recognized Margaret's voice immediately.
"...I've made sure of it."
Silence.
Then Margaret continued.
"Once everyone sees him lose his temper..."
"...Emma will finally understand who he really is."
Rachel's eyes widened.
She accidentally knocked over a stack of paper plates.
The crash echoed through the hallway.
Margaret ended the call instantly.
"Rachel?"
Rachel quickly stepped into the kitchen.
"I was looking for napkins."
Margaret studied her for a long moment.
Then smiled.
"They're in the cabinet."
Rachel forced a smile back.
But something felt terribly wrong.
On the morning of the birthday party...
Emma called Sophie into the kitchen.
"Sweetheart."
"Yes, Mommy?"
"Did you invite Aunt Lily's daddy?"
Sophie looked confused.
"No."
"I only invited Lily."
Emma frowned.
"Did Grandma send the invitations?"
Sophie nodded.
"She said she'd take care of everything."
Emma didn't think much of it.
She simply kissed Sophie's forehead.
"Go finish getting ready."
As Sophie skipped away, Emma looked once more at the guest list.
A strange feeling settled in her stomach.
Back in Daniel's apartment...
Lily twirled happily in her new lavender dress.
"Do I look pretty?"
Daniel pretended to think very hard.
"Hmm..."
She giggled.
"Daddy!"
He smiled.
"You look beautiful."
She held up her teddy bear.
"Mr. Buttons has a bow tie too."
Daniel laughed.
"I see that."
Lily carefully picked up Sophie's wrapped gift.
"I hope she likes it."
"I'm sure she will."
Then she grew quiet.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think Mommy will smile today?"
Daniel paused before answering.
"I hope so."
"So do I."
Hours later...
Everything unfolded exactly as Margaret had planned.
Daniel arrived.
Margaret confronted him.
The hidden camera recorded only the argument.
The internet received only half the truth.
But plans built on lies rarely remained hidden forever.
Two days after the party...
Rachel could no longer stay silent.
She drove to Daniel's apartment carrying something she had found while helping clean the Henderson mansion.
An unopened box of extra invitations.
Inside...
Every invitation had a printed guest number.
Except one.
Daniel's.
His invitation had been typed separately.
Different paper.
Different printer.
Different ink.
Someone had created it after all the others.
Rachel stared at it one last time before knocking on Daniel's door.
When he opened it, she held up the envelope.
"I think..."
Her voice trembled.
"...you were never supposed to be invited."
Daniel looked at the invitation in stunned silence.
Before he could ask another question, his phone rang.
Unknown Number.
He answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A distorted voice spoke only one sentence.
"If you want to know who sent the invitation..."
"...stop trusting the Henderson family."
The line went dead.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Rachel's face had turned pale.
Neither of them noticed the black SUV parked across the street.
Inside, the mysterious photographer smiled as he watched the meeting through a telephoto lens.
He picked up another phone.
"They've found the invitation."
A calm female voice answered.
"Good."
"Phase Two begins tonight."
The call ended.
Outside, dark clouds gathered over the city.
The birthday party was no longer the center of the mystery.
The invitation was.
Because someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure Daniel walked into that house.
May you like
And someone else was now making sure he discovered why.
