Chapter 6

Chapter 6
The Secret Conversation
The envelope arrived without a return address.
It was slipped beneath Daniel Carter's apartment door sometime after midnight.
No knock.
No message.
No name.
Just a plain brown envelope that looked ordinary enough to be ignored.
But inside...
Was something that could destroy an entire family.
The following morning, Daniel nearly stepped on it as he left for work.
He frowned.
"Lily?"
The little girl looked up from tying the ribbon on Mr. Buttons' neck.
"What is it, Daddy?"
"Did someone leave this here?"
She shook her head.
"I didn't hear anyone."
Daniel picked up the envelope.
It felt unusually heavy.
Inside was a small USB flash drive and a folded note.
The handwriting was printed in block letters.
If you want the truth, listen carefully.
Someone has been lying to both of you for years.
Trust your ears, not your memories.
Daniel stared at the note.
No signature.
Nothing else.
A chill ran down his spine.
After dropping Lily off at school, Daniel drove straight to his office.
His administrative leave meant the building was nearly empty for him, but he still had access to his private workspace.
He locked the door.
Inserted the flash drive into his laptop.
One audio file appeared.
Recording_0417.mp3
He hesitated.
Then pressed Play.
At first...
There was only static.
The clinking of porcelain.
Soft piano music in the background.
A café.
Then...
A familiar voice.
Margaret Henderson.
"There has to be another way."
Another woman laughed quietly.
"There is."
"Separate them."
Daniel's heart skipped a beat.
Margaret sighed.
"Emma still trusts him."
"For now."
The second woman replied calmly.
"Then stop attacking Daniel."
"Attack her confidence instead."
Silence.
Then Margaret spoke again.
"If she starts doubting herself..."
"...she'll start doubting him."
Daniel froze.
The recording continued.
"You've been planting little ideas for years."
"I know."
"It's working."
Margaret's voice sounded almost proud.
"She tells me everything now."
"Every disagreement."
"Every misunderstanding."
The other woman chuckled.
"Good."
"Eventually she won't need proof."
"She'll believe whatever you tell her."
Daniel felt physically sick.
The recording abruptly ended.
No names.
No dates.
No explanation.
Just two women discussing the destruction of a marriage as casually as planning lunch.
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
His hands trembled.
Had someone really manipulated Emma for years?
Or was the recording edited?
He needed answers.
Across town...
Emma couldn't stop thinking about Lily's drawing.
She had carried the folded picture in her handbag everywhere she went.
During lunch, she found herself staring at it again inside a quiet café.
"She forgot how to come home."
Lily's words echoed in her mind.
Emma wiped away a tear before anyone noticed.
Her phone rang.
Rachel.
"Emma."
Rachel sounded nervous.
"We need to talk."
"What happened?"
"It's about your mother."
Emma's stomach tightened.
"What about her?"
"I found something."
An hour later...
Rachel placed an old digital voice recorder on the café table.
"I was cleaning the guest room after the party."
"It was hidden behind a dresser."
Emma frowned.
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
"But I listened."
Rachel looked around to make sure no one was close enough to overhear.
"You should hear it yourself."
Emma pressed Play.
Her face slowly drained of color.
It was the same conversation Daniel had heard.
"...Eventually she won't need proof."
"...She'll believe whatever you tell her."
Emma stopped the recording.
"No..."
Rachel reached across the table.
"I'm sorry."
Emma stared at the recorder.
"This can't be real."
"I wish it wasn't."
Emma drove straight to her mother's mansion.
Margaret was arranging flowers in the dining room.
She smiled.
"You're home early."
Emma placed the recorder on the table.
"What's this?"
Margaret glanced at it casually.
"I have no idea."
"Listen."
Emma pressed play.
The room filled with Margaret's unmistakable voice.
For the first time...
Margaret's smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
Then it returned.
"This is fake."
Emma looked at her carefully.
"You didn't deny it."
"I said it's fake."
"That's not the same thing."
Margaret folded her arms.
"Anyone can edit recordings."
Emma searched her mother's face.
Years ago, she would have accepted that answer without question.
Today...
Something felt different.
"What don't you remember?"
Emma asked quietly.
Margaret blinked.
"What?"
"You always told me Daniel changed."
Emma's voice remained calm.
"But when?"
Margaret frowned.
"What kind of question is that?"
Emma stepped closer.
"Tell me one day."
"One specific day."
"When did he stop being the man I married?"
Margaret opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
She couldn't answer.
Because there had never been a single day.
Only years of tiny suggestions.
Tiny doubts.
Tiny accusations.
Until Emma no longer recognized the man standing beside her.
Margaret's expression hardened.
"You're letting him manipulate you again."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"I think someone manipulated me long before today."
Without another word, she picked up the recorder and walked toward the door.
Margaret called after her.
"If you leave now..."
"You'll regret it."
Emma stopped.
But she didn't turn around.
"I already do."
Then she walked out.
That evening...
Daniel sat alone on a park bench while Lily played on the swings nearby.
The USB drive rested in his pocket.
He still hadn't decided whether to tell Emma.
Part of him wanted answers.
Another part wanted to protect Lily from another battle.
"Daddy!"
Lily called happily.
"Push me higher!"
Daniel smiled.
"I'm coming."
As he stood...
A man wearing a gray hoodie quietly approached the bench.
"You listened."
Daniel turned sharply.
"Who are you?"
The stranger kept his hands visible.
"I'm not your enemy."
"Then tell me your name."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if they know I talked..."
He glanced nervously around the park.
"...I'll be next."
Daniel's expression became serious.
"They?"
The man looked directly into his eyes.
"The people you think destroyed your marriage..."
He lowered his voice.
"...aren't finished yet."
Before Daniel could stop him, the man slipped a folded photograph into his hand and disappeared into the crowd.
Daniel unfolded it.
The picture showed Margaret Henderson standing outside a downtown office building.
Beside her...
Was an elegant woman wearing dark sunglasses.
The same woman whose voice appeared in the recording.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence.
Find her... and you'll learn why your family was torn apart.
Daniel looked toward the direction the stranger had vanished.
He was gone.
Across the playground, Lily laughed as she soared through the air on the swing, completely unaware that the mystery surrounding her family had just grown far darker.
Somewhere nearby...
Hidden behind the tinted windows of a black sedan...
Someone watched Daniel fold the photograph and slip it into his jacket.
A woman's voice spoke softly from the back seat.
"So..."
"He has the recording."
The driver nodded.
"Yes."
She smiled faintly.
"Good."
"Now let's see..."
May you like
"...whether he chooses the truth."
