Chapter 2

Chapter 2
The Video Goes Viral
The first notification arrived before sunrise.
Then another.
And another.
By seven o'clock the next morning, Daniel Carter's phone had become a relentless chorus of vibrations.
He stared at the screen from the small kitchen of his apartment while coffee slowly turned cold in his mug.
Unknown Number: Have you seen what's online?
Rachel: Daniel, don't read the comments.
His colleague, Ben: Call me as soon as you wake up.
Daniel frowned.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Lily sat at the breakfast table in her pink pajamas, carefully feeding pieces of banana to her teddy bear before taking a bite herself.
"Daddy," she giggled, "Mr. Buttons only likes little pieces."
Daniel smiled despite the knot growing in his stomach.
"I'll remember that."
He unlocked his phone.
The first thing he saw was a news notification.
BUSINESSMAN LEAVES CHILD'S BIRTHDAY PARTY AFTER HEATED FAMILY CONFRONTATION
Below it...
A video.
He pressed play.
The footage began with him carrying Lily into the Henderson mansion.
The camera angle hid everything that happened before Margaret approached him.
It showed only fragments.
Margaret pointing her finger.
Daniel saying one firm word.
"No."
Then walking away while Lily clung to his shoulder.
The video ended there.
No context.
No explanation.
Just enough to tell half a story.
And half a story was often more dangerous than a lie.
Daniel looked at the view count.
2.8 million.
Uploaded less than twelve hours ago.
Thousands of comments flooded the screen.
"What kind of father ruins a kid's birthday?"
"He's using his daughter for sympathy."
"Poor little girl. Imagine growing up with a father who can't control himself."
"Someone should take that child away."
Daniel locked the phone.
His jaw tightened.
People who had never met him had already decided who he was.
"Daddy?"
Lily looked up.
"Why do you look sad?"
Daniel forced a smile.
"I'm okay."
She tilted her head.
"You always make that face when you're not okay."
Sometimes children understood adults better than adults understood themselves.
He walked over and kissed the top of her head.
"I'm just thinking."
Across town...
The Henderson mansion was just as quiet as Daniel's apartment.
Emma sat alone in the living room.
The birthday decorations were still hanging.
Half-melted candles remained on the cake no one had wanted to eat after the argument.
Her phone buzzed endlessly.
Friends.
Relatives.
Journalists.
She ignored every call.
Instead, she watched the same video Daniel had just seen.
Again.
And again.
Each time she reached the moment Lily whispered,
"Bye, Mommy."
Emma paused the video.
Tears blurred her vision.
She hadn't answered.
Not because she didn't want to.
Because she had frozen.
By the time she found her voice...
The door had already closed.
Margaret entered carrying a cup of tea.
"You should stop watching that."
Emma didn't look away from the screen.
"They're calling Daniel a monster."
Margaret shrugged.
"He embarrassed himself."
"No."
Emma whispered.
"They don't know what really happened."
Margaret placed the tea on the table.
"And they don't need to."
Emma slowly looked at her mother.
"You let people believe he started it."
Margaret folded her arms.
"Did he leave the party?"
"Yes."
"Then the video isn't lying."
Emma's voice hardened.
"It isn't telling the truth either."
Margaret's expression cooled.
"Truth is whatever people choose to believe."
Emma felt something inside her crack.
Meanwhile...
At Carter & Hayes Architecture, whispers followed Daniel through every hallway.
Conversations stopped when he passed.
Coworkers glanced at their phones before looking away.
Some offered awkward smiles.
Others avoided eye contact completely.
Daniel entered his office and closed the door.
A gentle knock came moments later.
"Come in."
Ben Harris stepped inside.
He had worked beside Daniel for nearly ten years.
"I figured you hadn't slept."
"I didn't."
Ben sighed.
"The partners have a meeting in an hour."
Daniel already knew.
"They're worried about the publicity."
Ben nodded reluctantly.
"Some clients have called."
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
"Of course they have."
An hour later...
The conference room felt colder than usual.
Three senior partners sat across from Daniel.
No one touched the coffee placed in front of them.
Finally, the managing partner spoke.
"We know the internet doesn't always tell the whole story."
Daniel appreciated the words.
Until the next sentence.
"But perception matters."
He looked directly at Daniel.
"We're asking you to take a temporary leave."
Daniel stared at him.
"You think I assaulted someone?"
"No."
"But clients are asking questions."
"And?"
"We have to protect the firm's reputation."
Daniel gave a slow nod.
After fifteen years of loyalty...
His career was being judged by a thirty-second video.
Outside the building, reporters were already waiting.
Microphones appeared the moment Daniel stepped through the revolving doors.
"Mr. Carter!"
"Did you intentionally disrupt the birthday party?"
"Is it true your wife asked you not to attend?"
"Are you using your daughter in your custody dispute?"
Daniel never slowed.
He simply walked past them.
The only thing louder than their questions...
Was Lily's laughter echoing in his memory.
She didn't deserve any of this.
That afternoon, Emma finally gathered the courage to visit Lily's elementary school.
She had promised to help with an art project weeks earlier.
When she entered the classroom...
She immediately noticed an empty chair.
"Lily isn't here today," the teacher explained gently.
Emma frowned.
"Is she sick?"
The teacher hesitated.
"Daniel called this morning."
"He thought it might be better if she stayed home."
Emma looked confused.
"Why?"
The teacher lowered her voice.
"Some of the older students saw the video."
"They were already talking about it."
Emma felt her stomach sink.
Even children.
The cruelty had already reached children.
Back at the apartment...
Daniel found Lily sitting by the window with crayons scattered across the floor.
She was drawing quietly.
"What are you making?"
She turned the paper around proudly.
It showed a little girl holding her father's hand.
Behind them stood a large house.
Its front door was closed.
Above the house...
Dark gray clouds covered only one side of the page.
The other side held a bright yellow sun.
Daniel smiled softly.
"It's beautiful."
Lily pointed to the sunny side.
"That's us."
Then she pointed to the cloudy side.
"That's Mommy's house."
Daniel's heart ached.
"Why is it raining there?"
Lily thought for a moment.
"Because nobody hugged Mommy."
Across the city...
Rachel sat in her apartment staring at the viral comments.
She had been at the party.
She knew exactly how the confrontation had started.
She also knew one more thing.
The person who recorded the video had deliberately begun filming after Margaret started shouting.
Someone had wanted Daniel to look guilty.
Her phone rang.
The caller ID displayed one name.
Emma.
Rachel answered immediately.
"Emma?"
"I need to ask you something."
"What is it?"
Emma's voice trembled.
"Did my mother know someone was recording?"
Rachel's silence lasted just a second too long.
Emma noticed.
"Rachel..."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"There was a man."
"What man?"
"I'd never seen him before."
"He wasn't invited."
Emma's breathing quickened.
"What happened?"
"I saw Aunt Margaret speaking to him before you arrived."
Emma's blood ran cold.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
Rachel hesitated.
"And..."
Emma whispered,
"What?"
"I think..."
"...he was waiting for Daniel."
The call ended.
Emma slowly lowered her phone.
For the first time since the separation...
She asked herself a question she had never dared to consider.
Had last night's humiliation been planned?
Far away, in a small apartment, Daniel tucked Lily into bed early.
She hugged her teddy bear and looked up at him.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"When people are mean..."
"...does it mean they stop loving you?"
Daniel brushed a hand gently through her hair.
"No."
"Sometimes..."
He smiled sadly.
"It just means they're hurting in ways we can't see."
Lily closed her eyes.
"I hope everybody feels better soon."
Daniel turned off the bedside lamp.
"So do I."
As he quietly closed her bedroom door, neither of them knew that someone was still watching them from a parked car across the street.
A camera lens focused on the apartment window.
A photograph was taken.
Then another.
And another.
The birthday party was over.
But whatever had truly begun that night...
May you like
Was only getting started.
