Chapter 11 — The Man Behind David

Chapter 11 — The Man Behind David
The screen flickered twice.
Then Lily's face appeared.
Maya stopped breathing.
Her daughter was sitting at the same kitchen table where they had eaten dinner together countless times.
Her hair was tied into two uneven braids.
She was wearing the purple pajamas Maya had bought her the previous Christmas.
There was a tiny scratch beneath her left eye.
Maya remembered that scratch.
Lily had gotten it climbing a tree.
The memory hit so hard that Maya had to grip the edge of the desk.
“Mama…”
Lily smiled at the camera.
It wasn't the smile of a frightened child.
It was the careful smile she used when she was trying to make Maya less worried.
“I don't know if you'll ever watch this.”
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“But if you do, I think something bad happened.”
The recording paused.
Lily looked down at her hands.
“I don't want you to be scared.”
Maya whispered:
“Oh, baby…”
David stood behind her, staring at the screen.
He looked as though someone had removed every piece of strength from his body.
Lily continued.
“Daddy says grown-ups lie when they're scared.”
A small smile appeared.
“I think that's true.”
Then her expression changed.
“But Mommy doesn't lie.”
Maya covered her mouth.
Lily leaned closer to the camera.
“So I'm going to tell you the truth.”
The screen went black.
Then another video appeared.
A hallway.
A door.
A man's shadow.
Maya leaned forward.
“Who is that?”
David whispered:
“I don't know.”
But his voice sounded uncertain.
The shadow moved.
The man's face appeared for less than a second.
Maya recognized him.
She had seen him in the photographs.
She had heard his name in Richard's records.
Victor Hale.
Richard Vance's former chief financial officer.
The man everyone believed had died three years earlier.
But Victor was alive.
And he was standing inside Richard's mansion.
Talking to Lily.
The recording changed.
Lily was sitting beneath a blanket.
Victor sat across from her.
He looked calm.
Almost fatherly.
“Do you know who I am?” he asked.
Lily shook her head.
“You've seen me before.”
“Are you Daddy's friend?”
Victor smiled.
“Something like that.”
“Are you bad?”
The smile disappeared.
“No.”
“Mommy says bad people don't always look bad.”
Victor laughed softly.
“Your mother is very smart.”
“Do you know my other name?”
Victor leaned forward.
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“Maya Vance.”
Lily frowned.
“That's Mommy's name.”
“Yes.”
“Why do I have it?”
Victor looked toward the camera.
For the first time, his expression became serious.
“Because your mother was never supposed to be Maya Harper.”
Lily stared.
“Then why does she call herself that?”
“Because someone made her.”
“Who?”
Victor didn't answer.
Lily's voice became quieter.
“Grandpa?”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather was afraid of losing everything.”
Lily thought about that.
“Did he hurt Mommy?”
Victor looked away.
“Yes.”
Maya's breath caught.
“Did he hurt me?”
Victor's silence was answer enough.
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't like Grandpa.”
“You shouldn't.”
“Is Daddy bad too?”
Victor hesitated.
“No.”
“Then why does he make Mommy sad?”
“Because he doesn't know the truth.”
Lily frowned.
“What truth?”
Victor looked directly into the camera.
“The truth about your father.”
The screen went black again.
A new file opened.
David appeared.
He was sitting in an office.
His eyes looked glassy.
A man stood behind him.
Victor.
On the desk was a glass of whiskey.
Victor placed something inside it.
David drank.
Maya turned toward him.
“What is that?”
David looked horrified.
“I don't remember this.”
The recording continued.
Victor said:
“You will forget this conversation.”
David stared blankly.
“Why?”
“Because you don't need to remember.”
“I love my daughter.”
Victor smiled.
“I know.”
“Then don't hurt her.”
“I won't.”
David's expression relaxed.
Victor leaned closer.
“But you will help me.”
“How?”
“You will convince Maya to leave.”
David shook his head.
“I won't.”
Victor placed another tablet into the glass.
“You will.”
David stared at it.
Then drank.
Maya's blood ran cold.
Agent Reed looked at David.
“They were drugging you.”
David nodded slowly.
“I remember headaches.”
“When?”
“For years.”
“Memory loss?”
“Yes.”
“Blackouts?”
David looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
Maya stared at him.
“You never told me.”
“I thought it was stress.”
“Or you didn't remember.”
David's face crumpled.
“Maybe.”
The recording continued.
Victor was standing over David.
“If Maya stays, Lily becomes the beneficiary.”
David shook his head.
“That's my daughter.”
Victor smiled.
“And that is why you will do what you're told.”
“What if I refuse?”
“Then Maya disappears.”
David's eyes widened.
“You said you wouldn't hurt her.”
“I said I wouldn't kill her.”
Victor's voice became cold.
“But I can make her disappear.”
David looked broken.
“What do you want?”
“Your signature.”
Victor placed a document on the desk.
David stared at it.
“What is it?”
“A transfer.”
“Of what?”
“The Vance succession.”
David hesitated.
Victor leaned closer.
“Sign.”
David signed.
Maya stared at the screen.
Her hands were shaking.
“What did he sign?”
Agent Reed froze the image.
The document title was visible.
SUCCESSION TRANSFER AGREEMENT
Beneficiary:
David Vance
Contingent Beneficiary:
Victor Hale
Maya looked at David.
“You signed the empire over to him.”
David stared at the screen.
“I didn't know.”
“You signed it.”
“I didn't know.”
The words came out like a plea.
“I swear.”
Maya wanted to scream.
But something stopped her.
Victor had been controlling David.
Drugging him.
Threatening him.
Using his fear against him.
David wasn't innocent.
But perhaps he wasn't the monster she had believed him to be.
Then another recording began.
Victor stood alone in the room.
He was talking to someone on the phone.
“She knows.”
A woman's voice answered.
Maya recognized it immediately.
Evelyn.
“She can't know yet.”
Victor laughed.
“Your daughter is smarter than you think.”
“She must be removed.”
“And Lily?”
A pause.
“Lily too.”
Victor's voice became colder.
“She is the key.”
“To what?”
“The trust.”
Evelyn replied:
“If the girl dies, the trust returns to David.”
“And if David refuses?”
“Then control him.”
“How?”
“You know how.”
The recording ended.
Maya turned slowly toward the doorway.
Evelyn was standing there.
Her face was expressionless.
“You lied to me.”
Evelyn didn't deny it.
“Yes.”
“You wanted Lily dead.”
“No.”
“You told Victor to remove her.”
“I meant remove her from the succession.”
“You knew she was being poisoned.”
“I knew someone was preparing her.”
“You knew!”
Evelyn's voice cracked.
“I tried to stop it.”
“When?”
“Too late.”
Maya walked toward her.
“You were supposed to protect me.”
“I did.”
“You destroyed my life.”
“I saved it.”
“You let me lose five years.”
“If I hadn't, you would have lost your entire life.”
Maya shook her head.
“You don't get to call that protection.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Victor appeared on another screen.
This time, he was speaking directly to the camera.
“I knew you would find this.”
Maya froze.
“If you're watching this, then I'm either dead…”
He smiled.
“…or very close to it.”
Agent Reed immediately looked around.
“Where is he?”
The room suddenly seemed smaller.
Victor continued.
“You probably think I'm the villain.”
Maya whispered:
“You are.”
Victor laughed.
“Perhaps.”
Then his expression changed.
“But I didn't start this.”
He pressed a button.
A photograph appeared.
Richard Vance.
Beside him was another man.
Older.
Powerful.
Maya didn't recognize him.
David did.
“My grandfather.”
Victor nodded.
“Exactly.”
The next photograph appeared.
A young Richard.
A young Evelyn.
And a baby.
Maya.
Then another photograph.
Richard meeting government officials.
Then another.
Bank transfers.
Political donations.
Offshore accounts.
And finally—
A document.
The original trust.
Victor said:
“Your grandfather created the trust to prevent Richard from destroying the family.”
David stared.
“But Richard controlled it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he killed the original trustee.”
Maya's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Victor answered:
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
“He didn't die naturally?”
“No.”
Victor's voice became quiet.
“Richard murdered his own father.”
David staggered backward.
“My father killed his father?”
“Yes.”
“And then took control of the trust.”
“Yes.”
Maya stared at the screen.
“And my mother?”
“Was the original beneficiary's mother.”
Victor nodded.
“Richard couldn't kill Evelyn without creating questions.”
“So he erased her.”
“Yes.”
“And me?”
“He erased you too.”
Maya's eyes filled.
“And Lily?”
Victor paused.
“Lily was the proof.”
The screen changed again.
A document appeared.
FINAL BENEFICIARY CLAUSE
The language was complicated.
Agent Reed read it carefully.
Then looked up.
“If Maya dies before the trust is activated, Lily inherits.”
Maya nodded.
“And if Lily dies?”
“David inherits.”
David's face went white.
“And if David dies?”
Agent Reed looked at the final line.
“The trust goes to the person who possesses the original seal.”
Maya frowned.
“Who has it?”
Victor appeared again.
“That's the question.”
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
THE SEAL IS WITH THE MAN WHO KILLED RICHARD.
Maya stared.
“Who killed Richard?”
David whispered:
“He died of a heart attack.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
“His death certificate says cardiac arrest.”
“Then what does this mean?”
No one answered.
Suddenly, the underground lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Maya heard a metallic click.
Then a gunshot.
Agent Reed shouted:
“DOWN!”
Maya dropped.
David pulled her behind a cabinet.
A second shot struck the wall.
Evelyn screamed.
Agent Reed returned fire.
Then silence.
Maya's breathing became frantic.
“Is everyone okay?”
David answered:
“Yes.”
Evelyn didn't respond.
Maya crawled toward her.
Her mother was lying on the floor.
Blood spread across her coat.
“Mom!”
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“I told you…”
Maya pressed her hands against the wound.
“Told me what?”
Evelyn struggled to breathe.
“The man behind David…”
Maya leaned closer.
“Who?”
Evelyn whispered:
“It's not Victor.”
Maya froze.
“Then who?”
Evelyn's eyes moved toward David.
“Look at his hand.”
Maya turned.
David's right hand was bleeding.
A small metallic object was clenched between his fingers.
An old signet ring.
The Vance family seal.
Maya stared.
David looked at it in confusion.
“I don't know where this came from.”
Evelyn whispered:
“That's the seal.”
Agent Reed looked at David.
“You had it?”
“I didn't.”
Evelyn's voice weakened.
“Someone put it there.”
Maya looked around.
“Who?”
Evelyn's eyes closed.
“The man who killed Richard…”
She struggled for breath.
“…is standing in this room.”
Everyone froze.
Maya looked at David.
Then Agent Reed.
Then the dark hallway.
A slow clap echoed from somewhere behind them.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A man stepped into the dim emergency light.
Victor Hale.
Alive.
Smiling.
“Finally.”
He looked at David.
“You remembered.”
David stared at him.
“You're the one.”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
He pointed toward Maya.
“She is.”
Maya's blood ran cold.
“What?”
Victor looked at the Vance seal.
“The person who killed Richard Vance wasn't me.”
He took one step forward.
“It was Maya.”
The room went silent.
Maya stared at him.
“I never killed anyone.”
Victor smiled.
May you like
“Not yet.”
Then the lights went out again.
