Chapter 13 — The Beneficiary

Chapter 13 — The Beneficiary
The security footage froze on Evelyn's face.
Maya stared at the screen.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Her mother was supposed to be wounded.
Her mother was supposed to be in a hospital bed.
Her mother was supposed to be somewhere under federal protection.
Instead, she had walked into Victor Hale's safe house carrying the Vance family seal.
Ten minutes later, Victor was dead.
Maya finally whispered:
“She killed him.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
“We don't know that.”
“She was there.”
“That doesn't prove she pulled the trigger.”
“She had the seal.”
Nathan stepped closer to the monitor.
“Zoom in.”
The image sharpened.
Evelyn stood beside Victor's body.
But something was wrong.
She wasn't holding a gun.
She was holding a small black box.
Nathan frowned.
“What is that?”
Agent Reed enlarged the image.
Maya's stomach tightened.
“I've seen it before.”
“Where?”
“In my father's study.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What was inside?”
“I don't know.”
Agent Reed stared at the footage.
“Then we're going to find out.”
They arrived at the safe house twenty minutes later.
The building had already been secured.
Victor's body lay in the hallway.
There was one gunshot wound.
A single bullet had entered his chest.
No weapon was found nearby.
Agent Reed crouched beside the body.
“He was killed at close range.”
Nathan looked around.
“Any signs of struggle?”
“None.”
Maya stared at Victor.
The man who had controlled so much of her life was finally dead.
Yet she felt no relief.
Only fear.
Because his death meant the last person who knew the entire truth might be gone.
Then she saw something beside his hand.
A tiny piece of paper.
She picked it up.
Three words had been written on it.
ASK THE BENEFICIARY.
Maya frowned.
“Who is the beneficiary?”
Nathan looked at her.
“You are.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“There's another one.”
Agent Reed examined the paper.
“Why would Victor write that?”
“Because he knew someone else would find it.”
Maya looked around the room.
“Search everything.”
The safe house had been designed to survive a raid.
Hidden compartments were built into the walls.
Documents were stored behind false panels.
Computers were encrypted.
But Victor had made one mistake.
He had kept a physical ledger.
Agent Reed found it beneath the floor.
Maya opened the cover.
The first page contained a list of names.
Richard Vance.
Evelyn Vance.
Victor Hale.
David Vance.
Maya Harper.
Then Lily Vance.
Maya's fingers stopped.
Beside Lily's name was a date.
The date of her birth.
And underneath it:
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY — CONFIRMED.
Maya stared.
“She was already the beneficiary.”
Nathan nodded.
“That means the trust was never waiting for her to become one.”
“What?”
“She was born into it.”
Maya turned the page.
There were legal documents.
Birth certificates.
DNA reports.
Court filings.
Bank statements.
Everything had been prepared years ago.
Even before Lily was born.
Then Maya saw something that made her blood run cold.
A second name had been written beneath Lily's.
MAYA VANCE — GUARDIAN BENEFICIARY.
Nathan looked over her shoulder.
“What does that mean?”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Agent Reed took the document.
“I do.”
He read the clause.
“If the primary beneficiary is a minor, control of the trust passes to the guardian beneficiary.”
Nathan stared.
“So Maya controls Lily's inheritance.”
“Yes.”
Maya looked at him.
“And if I die?”
Agent Reed continued reading.
“The trust passes to the secondary beneficiary.”
“Who?”
He turned the page.
There was no name.
Only a blank space.
Maya frowned.
“That's impossible.”
“Not necessarily.”
Agent Reed pointed to a paragraph.
“The secondary beneficiary is identified through the family seal.”
Nathan looked at the ring.
“So whoever possesses the seal controls the trust?”
“Not exactly.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
“The seal identifies the person.”
“Then who is it?”
Nobody answered.
They returned to the federal facility.
Nathan couldn't stop staring at Maya.
“What if it's not you?”
“What?”
“The beneficiary.”
Maya frowned.
“Who else could it be?”
“Your mother.”
Maya went still.
“She isn't a Vance by blood.”
“She married one.”
“That doesn't make her a beneficiary.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Unless Richard made her one.”
Maya remembered the photograph.
Her mother.
Richard.
The baby.
The hidden documents.
Everything suddenly seemed connected.
She opened the ledger again.
There was a final page.
Unlike the others, this one was handwritten.
The handwriting belonged to Richard.
Maya recognized it immediately.
There are three heirs.
Her heart began racing.
The first is blood.
Lily.
The second is memory.
Maya.
The third is choice.
She looked at Nathan.
“What does that mean?”
Nathan shook his head.
Maya read the final line.
The third heir will not know who they are until the first two are gone.
Silence.
Nathan whispered:
“Someone else is an heir.”
That night, Maya couldn't sleep.
She sat alone in the guest room, staring at Lily's photograph.
Her daughter was smiling.
A gap between her front teeth.
Messy hair.
A purple sweater.
Maya touched the photograph.
“I should have protected you.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You tried to protect me.”
She closed her eyes.
Then heard a sound.
Three knocks.
Maya opened her eyes.
The room was empty.
Another three knocks.
This time, from the wall.
She stood.
The sound came again.
Behind the bookshelf.
Maya moved it aside.
A narrow panel had appeared.
She pressed it.
The wall opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Her name was engraved on it.
MAYA.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Richard.
Not from Evelyn.
From Lily.
Maya's hands began shaking.
She unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was uneven.
Childlike.
Mommy,
If you found this, then something happened to me.
Maya covered her mouth.
Please don't cry.
Her tears fell onto the paper.
I know you think Daddy doesn't love us.
Maya closed her eyes.
But I think he's scared.
She continued reading.
The man who talks to Daddy isn't really Daddy's friend.
Maya's breathing stopped.
He told Daddy that if he doesn't listen, Mommy will disappear again.
Maya's hands shook.
I think Grandma knows.
The next sentence was underlined.
But Grandma isn't the worst one.
Maya froze.
The final line read:
The worst one is the person who owns the house.
Maya looked around.
The house belonged to David.
But the trust belonged to the family.
She suddenly understood.
The person Lily was referring to wasn't David.
It was someone who had legal control of the mansion.
Someone who had access to every room.
Someone who could move money without being questioned.
Someone who had been inside their lives for years.
Maya whispered:
“Richard.”
But Richard was dead.
Unless—
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
The next morning, Agent Reed received a call.
“What's wrong?”
He looked at Maya.
“We found a hidden account.”
“Whose?”
“David's.”
Maya felt a chill.
“Another one?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Approximately sixty-eight million dollars.”
Nathan stared.
“That's impossible.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
“The account was opened nineteen years ago.”
Maya frowned.
“Nineteen?”
“That was the year Maya disappeared.”
Maya's face went pale.
“Who deposited the money?”
Agent Reed hesitated.
“That's the problem.”
“Why?”
“Every transfer came from a different company.”
“Shell companies?”
“Yes.”
“Who owns them?”
“We don't know.”
Maya looked at Nathan.
“What about the account holder?”
Agent Reed opened the file.
The name was listed.
Maya read it.
Then read it again.
Her stomach dropped.
“That's not David.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Who is it?”
Maya whispered:
“Lily.”
Silence.
Nathan stared.
“But Lily was seven.”
“The account was opened before she was born.”
Maya shook her head.
“That isn't possible.”
Agent Reed looked at her.
“Unless someone knew she was going to exist.”
Maya's heart stopped.
“Who?”
He turned the document around.
The signature was visible.
Maya Vance.
Maya stared.
“I never signed that.”
Agent Reed nodded.
“We know.”
“Then someone forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Agent Reed looked at the security footage.
Evelyn.
The answer seemed obvious.
But Maya no longer trusted obvious answers.
That afternoon, they found Evelyn.
She wasn't hiding.
She was sitting in a quiet café outside the city.
A cup of tea sat untouched in front of her.
Maya walked inside.
Her mother looked up.
“I knew you'd come.”
Maya sat across from her.
“You killed Victor.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“He killed himself.”
Maya frowned.
“What?”
“He knew what was coming.”
“That's not an answer.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You want the truth.”
“Yes.”
“You aren't ready.”
“I buried my daughter.”
Her voice cracked.
“There is nothing left that can frighten me.”
Evelyn's expression softened.
“That is exactly what I'm afraid of.”
Maya placed the trust documents on the table.
“Tell me who the beneficiary is.”
Evelyn looked at the papers.
Then at Maya.
“You already know.”
“No.”
“You are.”
Maya shook her head.
“I'm the guardian.”
“You are more than that.”
Evelyn reached into her purse.
She removed an old birth certificate.
Maya stared.
It wasn't hers.
It wasn't Lily's.
It wasn't Nathan's.
It belonged to a child named—
Elizabeth Vance.
Maya's blood froze.
“Who is Elizabeth?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Your grandmother.”
Maya frowned.
“What?”
“Her legal name was Elizabeth Vance.”
“So?”
“She was the original beneficiary.”
Maya stared at the certificate.
“But she's dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then the trust should have ended.”
“It didn't.”
“Why?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Elizabeth had another child.”
Maya stared.
“Richard.”
Evelyn nodded.
“And Richard had Nathan.”
“Yes.”
“And me.”
“Yes.”
“And Lily.”
“Yes.”
Maya frowned.
“Then what's the problem?”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Richard wasn't Elizabeth's biological son.”
Maya stopped breathing.
“What?”
“He was adopted.”
Silence.
“Then who was his father?”
Evelyn looked directly into her daughter's eyes.
“The man who owned the house.”
Maya felt a chill.
“Who?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Victor.”
Maya's face went pale.
“Victor was Richard's father?”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Victor was the man who helped Elizabeth hide the truth.”
Maya stared.
“Then who owned the house?”
Evelyn's eyes hardened.
“Your grandfather's brother.”
Maya whispered:
“Who?”
Evelyn answered:
“Samuel Vance.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“Samuel?”
Evelyn nodded.
“My husband's older brother.”
“But he died before I was born.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“That's what everyone was told.”
Maya stared.
“Is he alive?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The fear in her eyes said everything.
That evening, Maya received an unknown message.
Only one sentence.
You are looking for the wrong dead man.
Then another message appeared.
Richard was not the architect.
A third.
Victor was not the killer.
A fourth.
Evelyn is not the traitor.
Maya's hands trembled.
Then the final message arrived.
Your real enemy is the man who inherited everything when Samuel Vance disappeared.
Maya looked at Nathan.
“Who inherited everything?”
Nathan opened the old succession records.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
“What?”
He showed her the document.
After Samuel disappeared, control of the Vance estate transferred to—
David Vance.
Maya stared.
“David?”
Nathan shook his head.
“My father.”
“But David is your husband.”
“Yes.”
Maya looked at the date.
The transfer occurred before David was born.
Her blood ran cold.
“That can't be.”
Nathan whispered:
“Unless David's identity was changed.”
Maya looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Nathan's face had gone pale.
“My father wasn't Richard's only son.”
“Then who was David?”
Nathan looked at the document again.
“Someone adopted into the family.”
Maya's heart stopped.
The pieces were falling into place.
David had been drugged.
David had been controlled.
David had been manipulated.
But perhaps the reason wasn't because he was weak.
Perhaps it was because he had never been who everyone believed he was.
Maya whispered:
“Then who is my husband?”
Before Nathan could answer, Maya's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“You've been asking the wrong questions, Maya.”
She froze.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed softly.
“You really don't remember me?”
Maya's blood ran cold.
The voice continued:
“I held you the night you were born.”
She couldn't breathe.
“I was there when Nathan was born.”
Maya's hand tightened around the phone.
“And I was there when Lily was born.”
Maya whispered:
“Who are you?”
The man answered:
“Your real father.”
The call ended.
Maya stared at the screen.
Nathan stood beside her.
“What happened?”
Maya slowly looked up.
“I think I just found out why my mother lied about everything.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Evelyn isn't my mother.”
Nathan froze.
Maya looked toward the window.
“And whoever just called me…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“…is the man who created the entire Vance dynasty.”
