Chapter 12 — Maya’s Second Secret

Chapter 12 — Maya’s Second Secret
The darkness swallowed the room.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Agent Reed shouted:
“Everyone stay down!”
A gunshot cracked through the underground chamber.
Something shattered behind Maya.
She instinctively covered her head.
David grabbed her wrist.
“Stay with me!”
“I am!”
“Don't move!”
Another shot.
Then silence.
The emergency lights flickered back on.
Victor was gone.
So was the hallway behind him.
Maya stared at the empty space.
“He was right there.”
Agent Reed moved toward the doorway.
“No one leaves.”
David looked at Maya.
His face was pale.
“What did he mean?”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Victor's final words echoed in her mind.
The person who killed Richard Vance wasn't me.
It was Maya.
Then:
Not yet.
Maya couldn't explain why those two words frightened her more than the accusation itself.
Not yet.
As though Victor wasn't talking about the past.
As though he was talking about something waiting to happen.
Evelyn groaned.
Maya immediately dropped beside her.
“Mom.”
Evelyn opened her eyes.
Blood had soaked through her coat.
Agent Reed knelt beside them.
“Where were you hit?”
“My side.”
“Can you breathe?”
“Barely.”
“Stay awake.”
Evelyn grabbed Maya's hand.
“Listen.”
Maya leaned closer.
“What?”
“You have to leave.”
“No.”
“Now.”
“I'm not leaving you.”
“You don't understand.”
Evelyn's eyes were filled with terror.
“Victor wanted you here.”
“Why?”
“To activate the trust.”
Maya frowned.
“I don't understand.”
“The trust doesn't activate because Lily died.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
Evelyn struggled for breath.
“It activates when the original beneficiary confirms her bloodline.”
Maya looked at Agent Reed.
“That's me.”
He nodded slowly.
“And Victor brought you here.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To force you to open the vault.”
Maya looked toward the steel door.
“You knew the vault existed.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew the seal was here.”
“Yes.”
Maya stared at her.
“You brought me here.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I didn't know Victor would come.”
Maya stood.
“So this was all a trap.”
“No.”
“You knew enough.”
“Yes.”
Maya's voice cracked.
“Everyone knew something except me.”
Evelyn reached for her.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Maya pulled away.
“You keep saying that.”
Agent Reed examined the room.
“There's another exit.”
David looked up.
“Where?”
Behind the server rack.
A narrow metal door had been concealed in the wall.
Agent Reed opened it.
A staircase led upward.
“Victor used this.”
David looked at the stairs.
“Where does it go?”
“Probably outside.”
Maya looked toward Evelyn.
“We need to get her out.”
Agent Reed nodded.
Two officers carried Evelyn toward the exit.
David remained beside Maya.
Neither spoke.
Finally, David said:
“You don't believe Victor.”
Maya stared ahead.
“I don't know what I believe anymore.”
“He said you killed my father.”
“I didn't.”
“I know.”
“You don't know anything.”
David looked hurt.
“I know you.”
Maya turned.
“Do you?”
He didn't answer.
“You didn't know I was pregnant.”
“I know.”
“You didn't know Lily was being watched.”
“I know.”
“You didn't know your own father was controlling you.”
“I know.”
“You didn't even know the woman you planned to marry was helping destroy our family.”
David looked down.
“I know.”
Maya's voice softened.
“But I didn't kill Richard.”
David looked at her.
“I believe you.”
“Then why is the seal in your hand?”
David looked down.
The ring was still there.
“I don't know.”
Maya stared at it.
Then noticed something.
The inside of the ring had been scratched.
There were three tiny letters.
M.H.V.
She froze.
“What?”
David looked.
“What is it?”
Maya touched the engraving.
“My initials.”
David frowned.
“Maya Harper Vance.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“My mother used those initials.”
Evelyn.
Maya Harper Vance.
But Evelyn had never used the Vance name publicly.
Why was it engraved inside Richard's seal?
They reached the surface.
Rain had begun falling.
Federal agents surrounded the mansion.
Evelyn was taken to an ambulance.
Maya stood beneath the awning.
David approached.
“I need to tell you something.”
She looked at him.
“What?”
“I remember something.”
Maya waited.
“From the night you disappeared.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
“I woke up.”
“When?”
“The night before you left.”
Maya stared at him.
“You were drugged.”
“Yes.”
“What do you remember?”
David closed his eyes.
“I remember my father arguing with someone.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did they say?”
“He said, ‘She knows.’”
Maya's breath caught.
“Who knew?”
“I don't know.”
“Then what?”
“My father said, ‘If she tells Nathan, everything falls apart.’”
Maya frowned.
“Nathan?”
David nodded.
“Who was Nathan?”
“I don't know.”
Maya's heart began pounding.
Another name.
Another secret.
Another person connected to her disappearance.
Then David remembered something else.
“A woman screamed.”
“Who?”
“I thought it was you.”
Maya stared.
“But?”
“But my father said…”
David opened his eyes.
“She isn't Maya.”
Maya went completely still.
“What?”
“He said, ‘That's not Maya.’”
The ambulance doors closed around Evelyn.
Maya looked toward her mother.
“Mom!”
Evelyn raised one hand weakly.
Maya ran over.
“Who is Nathan?”
Evelyn's eyes widened.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared on her face.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“David remembered it.”
Evelyn looked at David.
Then back at Maya.
“You shouldn't know.”
Maya's voice became cold.
“I should know everything.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Nathan is dead.”
“Who was he?”
“Your brother.”
Maya stopped breathing.
“My what?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Your twin.”
The world seemed to tilt.
Maya stepped backward.
“I don't have a brother.”
“You did.”
“Did?”
“He died.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
Maya shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“He was born first.”
“Why have I never heard of him?”
“Because Richard erased him.”
David stared.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“Because Nathan was the original heir.”
Maya couldn't breathe.
“Then why did the trust come to me?”
“Because Nathan died.”
“How?”
Evelyn's expression changed.
“He didn't.”
Silence.
Maya stared.
“What?”
Evelyn whispered:
“He survived.”
The rain intensified.
Maya couldn't hear anything except her mother's words.
“Nathan survived?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You said he died.”
“I thought he did.”
“When did you find out?”
“Years later.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he was dangerous.”
“To whom?”
“To Richard.”
Maya's stomach tightened.
“And to me?”
Evelyn looked away.
“To everyone.”
Agent Reed approached.
“We need to move.”
Maya looked at him.
“My mother says I had a twin.”
Agent Reed's expression changed.
“What's his name?”
“Nathan Vance.”
Reed pulled out his tablet.
“I'll check.”
He typed.
Then stopped.
“What?”
He looked at Maya.
“There is a Nathan Vance.”
Her heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Thirty-eight years old.”
“That can't be.”
“According to this record, he was born eight minutes before you.”
Maya stared at the screen.
“Where is he now?”
Agent Reed swallowed.
“Chicago.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Maya felt dizzy.
“Then why did my mother say he was dead?”
Agent Reed looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't answer.
David stepped forward.
“There's something else.”
Maya turned.
“What?”
“The man Victor was talking about.”
“Which man?”
“The one behind everything.”
David looked toward the old mansion.
“I saw him once.”
“When?”
“The night you disappeared.”
Maya's heart began pounding.
“Who was he?”
David hesitated.
Then said:
“Nathan.”
Maya couldn't move.
Her twin.
Alive.
At the center of the conspiracy.
The man Richard had supposedly erased.
The man whose name had appeared in David's memory.
And possibly the man Victor had been protecting.
Agent Reed's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at Maya.
“We found Nathan Vance.”
“Where?”
“Outside Chicago.”
“Is he alive?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“Then take me to him.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“He's under federal protection.”
“From whom?”
Agent Reed looked toward David.
“From your family.”
Maya's blood went cold.
Two hours later, they arrived at a secure federal facility.
Maya was escorted through three locked doors.
Finally, they entered a small interrogation room.
A man sat on the other side of the glass.
Dark hair.
Sharp jaw.
Pale skin.
A scar ran from his left eyebrow to his cheek.
He looked older than Maya.
But she recognized him instantly.
Not because she had seen his photograph.
Because his eyes were hers.
Nathan looked up.
Their eyes met.
He whispered something.
Maya couldn't hear it.
She entered the room.
Nathan stood.
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then he said:
“You shouldn't have come.”
Maya's voice shook.
“You're my brother.”
Nathan looked away.
“Yes.”
“Why did everyone tell me you were dead?”
“Because I was supposed to be.”
“Did you kill Richard?”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He stared at her.
“You did.”
Maya's blood froze.
“I told you. I didn't.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“You don't remember.”
“Remember what?”
“The night our father died.”
Maya shook her head.
“I wasn't there.”
Nathan looked into her eyes.
“You were.”
“No.”
“You were standing beside him.”
“No.”
“You were holding the seal.”
Maya felt the room spin.
“That isn't possible.”
Nathan whispered:
“You were twenty-five.”
Maya's breath caught.
Twenty-five.
The year she had first met David.
The year Richard had told her she was nothing.
The year she had supposedly begun her life as Maya Harper.
Nathan continued.
“You confronted him.”
“Why?”
“Because you found the trust.”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't remember.”
“They made sure you didn't.”
“Who?”
Nathan looked toward the observation glass.
“Victor.”
Maya's heart sank.
“What did he do?”
“He drugged you.”
“Like David?”
“Yes.”
“Then why do I remember nothing?”
Nathan's expression softened.
“Because the memory wasn't erased.”
Maya frowned.
“What?”
“It was transferred.”
“Transferred where?”
Nathan pointed to her temple.
“Into another part of your mind.”
Maya stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It will.”
He sat down.
“Lily found the truth.”
“What truth?”
Nathan looked at her.
“She wasn't the first person they tried to erase.”
Maya's heart stopped.
“Who was?”
“You.”
Nathan reached into his jacket.
He removed a photograph.
Maya looked at it.
It showed her.
Twenty-five years old.
Standing beside Richard.
She was holding the Vance family seal.
Blood stained her white blouse.
Behind her, Richard was lying on the floor.
Maya gasped.
“No.”
Nathan nodded.
“This is the night your memory was broken.”
She stared at the photograph.
“I didn't kill him.”
“I know.”
“Then why am I holding the seal?”
“Because you took it from him.”
“Why?”
“Because he was dying.”
Maya looked at him.
“What happened?”
Nathan's voice became quiet.
“You didn't kill Richard.”
“Then who did?”
Nathan looked directly at her.
“Victor.”
Maya's heart pounded.
“He shot him.”
“Then why does the photograph show me?”
“Because Victor made you believe you had done it.”
“How?”
“He used the drug.”
Maya stared.
Nathan continued.
“He put the seal in your hand.”
“Why?”
“To make you believe you were responsible.”
“And then?”
“He erased your memory.”
Maya whispered:
“Why?”
“Because he needed you afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Nathan's expression became grim.
“The truth.”
Maya stared at the photograph.
A memory flashed.
A hallway.
Richard shouting.
Victor holding a gun.
A child crying.
A woman's voice.
Then—
Lily.
No.
Lily wasn't there.
It was Maya.
Twenty-five years old.
Pregnant.
Her hand resting on her stomach.
She remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
Richard had discovered she was pregnant.
He had threatened her.
He had told her David would never know.
He had told her Lily would never inherit.
Then Victor appeared.
He shot Richard.
Maya screamed.
Victor drugged her.
And before she lost consciousness, she heard Richard whisper:
“Run.”
Maya's eyes opened.
She was back in the present.
Nathan was watching her.
“You remembered.”
Maya touched her temple.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Everything.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“What did you see?”
Maya's voice shook.
“Richard wasn't alone.”
Nathan waited.
“He was protecting someone.”
“Who?”
Maya looked at him.
“You.”
Nathan went still.
“What?”
“Richard wasn't trying to destroy you.”
She swallowed.
“He was trying to hide you.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“From whom?”
Maya stared at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“Victor.”
Nathan's face went pale.
“That isn't possible.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor was working for Richard.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
She remembered the gun.
The voice.
The final words.
Victor hadn't been working for Richard.
He had been working against him.
And someone else had been giving him orders.
Maya suddenly understood.
“The person behind Victor…”
Nathan looked at her.
“Who?”
Maya whispered:
“Evelyn.”
The door opened.
Agent Reed entered.
“Maya.”
She turned.
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“What happened?”
“Evelyn disappeared from the hospital.”
Maya froze.
“How?”
“She was never in the hospital.”
“What?”
Agent Reed placed a file on the table.
“The woman who was shot wasn't Evelyn.”
Maya's blood ran cold.
“What?”
“She was a decoy.”
Nathan stood.
“Then where is the real Evelyn?”
Agent Reed looked at Maya.
“We don't know.”
Maya stared at the photograph of herself holding the seal.
Then at Nathan.
Then toward the dark observation glass.
A final realization settled over her.
The woman who had spent twenty years claiming to protect her wasn't protecting her.
She had been preparing her.
And Lily had discovered it before anyone else.
Maya whispered:
“My mother didn't save me.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What did she do?”
Maya closed her eyes.
“She made sure I would finish what she started.”
Outside the room, a phone began ringing.
Agent Reed answered.
His face went pale.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at Maya.
“There's been another murder.”
“Who?”
He swallowed.
“Victor Hale.”
Maya stared.
“But he's alive.”
“He was.”
“How?”
Agent Reed looked at the security footage.
“Someone walked into his safe house ten minutes ago.”
“Who?”
Agent Reed turned the screen toward her.
A woman stepped into view.
Maya stopped breathing.
May you like
It was Evelyn.
And in her hand was the Vance family seal.
