Chapter 4 – After the Lights Go Out

Chapter 4 – After the Lights Go Out

The awards ceremony did not continue.

There was nothing left to celebrate.

People left slowly at first.

Then all at once.

Like the room itself had lost its reason to exist.

I stayed behind.

Not because I needed closure.

But because I had already written it.

A technician approached cautiously.

“Everything you triggered… it was preloaded into the event system?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“That’s… months of preparation.”

“Longer,” I said.

Outside, sirens faded into distance.

Inside, the stage lights dimmed one by one.

Until only the wine stain on my blouse remained visible under the final spotlight.

A reminder.

Not of humiliation.

But of timing.

The moment I chose not to interrupt him wasn’t mercy.

It was precision.

A few hours later, as I walked out of the building, someone from the crowd finally asked:

“Did you know he would destroy himself like that?”

I paused.

Then answered honestly.

“No.”

“I knew he couldn’t help trying to destroy me in public.”

“And people like that…”

I looked back at the empty stage.

“…always forget the room has cameras too.”

I stepped outside.

The doors closed behind me.

And for the first time that night, there was no audience left to impress.

Only truth, finally uninterrupted.

THE END.
