CHAPTER I – THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT LEAVE
For a moment, it really looked like he would walk away.
The old man stood still in front of the counter, his hands clenched inside the pockets of his torn coat. His beard was uneven, his hair long and messy, like time had simply stopped caring about him.
But he didn’t move.
“I don’t need charity,” he said again, voice low but steady. “I need a chance to stand in front of an employer without being judged before I speak.”
The receptionist sighed sharply. “We don’t run a rehabilitation center. Please leave.”
Behind him, the stylists were still watching. One of them smirked.
“Maybe he should try a homeless shelter instead,” someone whispered.
A few quiet laughs followed.
The old man closed his eyes for a brief second.
When he opened them again, something had changed—not in the room, but in him.
“I used to build places like this,” he said softly.
