CHAPTER 10 — THE SECOND USB

CHAPTER 10 — THE SECOND USB

Claire stared at the gun.

Her mother stood twenty feet away.

The lobby had gone silent.

No guests moved.

No employees spoke.

Even the music had stopped.

Claire's eyes dropped to the weapon.

Then slowly returned to her mother's face.

“Mom?”

Her mother looked older than Claire remembered.

Not weak.

Not frightened.

Tired.

As if she had been carrying the weight of the world for twenty years.

“Claire.”

“Put the gun down.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Her mother looked behind Claire.

At Elena.

Then at Vivian.

Then at the security cameras.

“Because they are already here.”

Claire's heart raced.

“Who?”

Her mother whispered:

“The people who don't want you to remember.”

A voice suddenly came from the speakers.

“Too late.”

Every light in the lobby went out.

THE BLACKOUT

Panic erupted.

Guests screamed.

Someone knocked over a table.

Glass shattered.

Claire heard footsteps.

Fast.

Coming toward her.

She ducked.

A hand grabbed her arm.

She almost screamed.

“It's me.”

Vivian.

Claire pulled away.

“You have a lot to explain.”

“I know.”

“Where's my mother?”

“Gone.”

“What?”

“She disappeared during the blackout.”

Claire looked around.

“Then where did she go?”

Vivian grabbed her hand.

“We have to leave.”

“No.”

Claire pulled away.

“Not until I know the truth.”

Vivian stared at her.

“You're not ready.”

“I've heard that for three years.”

Claire's voice shook.

“I'm done being protected.”

Vivian's expression changed.

“Then come with me.”

“Where?”

“To the room that doesn't exist.”

Claire froze.

“You found it?”

“No.”

Vivian looked toward the service corridor.

“Someone left it open.”

THE SECOND ROOM

They entered the corridor.

Vivian locked the door behind them.

They walked through a narrow passage.

At the end was a steel wall.

No door.

No handle.

Vivian placed her hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Claire frowned.

“It's locked.”

Vivian shook her head.

“No.”

She pulled out a small object.

A USB drive.

Claire stared.

“Another one?”

Vivian nodded.

“The second USB.”

Claire's heart raced.

“Where did you get it?”

“Your mother.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Claire took it.

“What does it contain?”

Vivian looked at her.

“The truth.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“This time, I mean it.”

Vivian inserted the USB into a hidden terminal.

The screen flickered.

A single folder appeared.

CLAIRE BENNETT — FINAL AUTHORIZATION

Claire stared.

“Open it.”

Vivian shook her head.

“You open it.”

“Why?”

“Because this file belongs to you.”

Claire clicked.

A video appeared.

The screen showed a woman sitting in a dark room.

Claire's breath stopped.

It was her.

Not now.

Three years earlier.

Healthy.

Awake.

Looking directly into the camera.

And smiling.

CLAIRE'S CONFESSION

The woman on the screen spoke.

“If you're watching this, then the plan failed.”

Claire stared at herself.

Her voice continued.

“My name is Claire Bennett.”

“I am twenty-nine years old.”

“I am married to Julian Cross.”

“I have a daughter named Lily.”

“And tonight…”

She paused.

“…I am going to disappear.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Vivian stood beside her.

The recording continued.

“I know what the Bennett family owns.”

“I know what the hotel empire is.”

“I know about the identities.”

“The accounts.”

“The insurance policies.”

“The people who vanished.”

Claire's eyes widened.

She had known.

She had known everything.

Three years ago.

The woman on the screen continued.

“I also know that someone inside my family is planning to kill Lily.”

Claire looked at Vivian.

Vivian whispered:

“She knew.”

Claire couldn't speak.

The recording continued.

“I cannot trust the police.”

“I cannot trust the courts.”

“I cannot trust the hotel.”

“I cannot trust my father.”

“I cannot trust Victor.”

“I cannot trust Richard.”

Claire's breathing became shallow.

Then the sentence that destroyed everything:

“And I cannot trust Julian.”

Claire froze.

The video continued.

“Julian believes he is protecting me.”

“He isn't.”

“He doesn't know the whole plan.”

“But I do.”

Claire stared.

Her younger self looked directly into the camera.

“I am going to let him believe he betrayed me.”

“I am going to let everyone believe I died.”

“Because the only way to find the person behind the empire…”

She paused.

“…is to make them think they won.”

The video ended.

Claire stood completely still.

THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED HER OWN DEATH

Vivian slowly turned toward her.

“You knew.”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't remember.”

“You planned everything.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I couldn't have.”

“You did.”

Claire stared at the screen.

The woman on it was unmistakably her.

Calm.

Determined.

Certain.

“She looks like me.”

“She is you.”

“But why don't I remember?”

Vivian's eyes filled with tears.

“Because you asked your mother to erase it.”

Claire turned sharply.

“What?”

“You knew you would be captured.”

“You knew someone would interrogate you.”

“So you created a memory barrier.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“You didn't trust yourself.”

Claire stared at her.

“What did I do?”

Vivian answered:

“You ordered your own memories destroyed.”

THE REAL JULIAN

The door suddenly opened.

Julian stood there.

Claire's heart stopped.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was torn.

Blood stained his sleeve.

Claire immediately stepped back.

“You.”

Julian looked at the screen.

Then at her.

“You found it.”

“You knew about this?”

“Yes.”

“You knew I planned my own disappearance?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you made me promise.”

Claire stared.

“What promise?”

“That if you ever woke up without your memories…”

He swallowed.

“…I would let you hate me.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

“Because you believed hatred would keep you alive.”

She shook her head.

“So all this time…”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you abandoned me.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me suffer.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every person who believed you were dead stopped looking for you.”

Claire stared.

“Except Vivian.”

“Yes.”

“Except Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Except Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Except my mother.”

Julian looked at her.

“She never stopped looking.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“Your mother spent three years trying to find you.”

“But she had a gun.”

“To protect you.”

“From whom?”

Julian hesitated.

“From me.”

Claire's face went pale.

“What?”

Julian stepped closer.

“She thought I had become the person who betrayed you.”

“And did you?”

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“Then who did?”

Julian looked at the second USB.

“The person you trusted most.”

THE FILE BEHIND THE FILE

The screen suddenly changed.

A new folder appeared.

LEVEL ZERO.

Julian went pale.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“Don't open that.”

Claire's expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because that's the one thing your father never wanted you to see.”

She clicked.

The screen went black.

Then a document appeared.

PROJECT EVE.

Claire read the first line.

Primary subject: Claire Bennett.

Her stomach tightened.

Second line:

Secondary subject: Lily Bennett.

Third line:

Control subject: Julian Cross.

Claire stopped.

“Control subject?”

Julian didn't answer.

She continued reading.

Purpose: Determine whether Claire Bennett can be psychologically manipulated into surrendering the Bennett Trust.

Claire's face went white.

“This wasn't about protecting me.”

Julian whispered:

“No.”

“It was an experiment.”

“Yes.”

“Who created it?”

Julian looked at her.

“Your father.”

Claire stepped back.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he experiment on his own daughter?”

Julian's voice was barely audible.

“Because he needed to know if you were strong enough to inherit the empire.”

Claire felt sick.

“My entire life…”

“Yes.”

“Was a test?”

“Yes.”

THE REAL BETRAYAL

The second USB contained another video.

Claire's father appeared on screen.

He looked younger.

Powerful.

Cold.

He spoke directly to the camera.

“Claire will eventually discover the truth.”

“If she survives, she becomes the heir.”

“If she fails, the trust transfers to Victor.”

Claire stared.

Her father's voice continued.

“Julian must remain unaware of the complete operation.”

“Vivian must believe she is protecting Claire.”

“Daniel must believe he is protecting Julian.”

“Even my wife must believe she is protecting our daughter.”

Claire's eyes widened.

Everyone had been manipulated.

Everyone.

Her father had created a web so complicated that no one knew where the truth ended.

Then he said something that made Claire's blood freeze.

“There is only one person who knows everything.”

Claire leaned closer.

“Who?”

Her father's face remained emotionless.

“The daughter.”

Claire whispered:

“Me.”

The video continued.

“If Claire is watching this, then she has succeeded.”

“And if she has succeeded…”

He smiled.

“…she has finally learned the most important lesson.”

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

NEVER TRUST THE PERSON WHO TELLS YOU THE TRUTH.

THE MISSING THREE YEARS

Claire stared at the screen.

Suddenly, memories began returning.

Not clearly.

Fragments.

Julian holding her hand.

A car in the rain.

Her mother screaming.

Victor standing over a table.

Vivian crying.

Daniel handing her a USB.

And herself—

signing something.

Claire grabbed her head.

“I remember.”

Julian rushed toward her.

“Claire.”

“Don't touch me.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“I remember the night before the crash.”

“What?”

“I wasn't afraid.”

Julian stared.

“I was angry.”

“At whom?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“At you.”

Julian's face fell.

“Why?”

“Because I found something.”

“What?”

“The first USB.”

Vivian looked at her.

“The one you had?”

Claire nodded.

“I discovered the insurance scheme.”

Julian stepped closer.

“And?”

“I discovered someone had been transferring money from the trust.”

“To where?”

Claire looked at the screen.

“To a private hotel account.”

Julian's face changed.

“Which hotel?”

Claire whispered the name.

“The Bennett Grand.”

Silence.

Julian shook his head.

“That hotel doesn't exist anymore.”

Claire looked at him.

“It does.”

“How do you know?”

“Because that's where I met him.”

“Who?”

Claire's face became pale.

“The person who offered to help me.”

Julian stared.

“Who?”

Claire slowly answered:

“Richard Vale.”

THE PERSON BEHIND THE PLAN

Julian's face went completely white.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“He approached you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night before I disappeared.”

“What did he want?”

Claire remembered.

“He offered me a deal.”

“What deal?”

“He said he could protect Lily.”

“In exchange for what?”

Claire looked down.

“The trust.”

Julian whispered:

“You almost accepted.”

“I didn't.”

“What happened?”

“I realized he was lying.”

“And then?”

“I recorded him.”

Julian's eyes widened.

“You recorded Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Where is the recording?”

Claire looked at the second USB.

“I thought this was it.”

She opened another folder.

There was one final file.

RICHARD VALE — ORIGINAL CONFESSION.

Claire clicked.

Richard appeared on screen.

Three years younger.

Smiling.

He looked directly at Claire.

“I know you're recording this.”

Claire froze.

Richard continued:

“And that's exactly why I chose you.”

Julian stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Richard smiled.

“You think you discovered the hotel empire.”

“You think you discovered the trust.”

“You think you discovered the insurance scheme.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“But you haven't discovered the real secret.”

Claire stared.

Richard's expression changed.

“The hotel empire isn't controlled by the Vale family.”

Silence.

“It isn't controlled by Victor.”

“It isn't controlled by your father.”

“And it certainly isn't controlled by Julian.”

Claire's heart raced.

Richard smiled.

“The empire is controlled by the person who owns the original ledger.”

A pause.

“And Claire…”

He looked directly into the camera.

“That ledger belongs to you.”

The recording ended.

Claire stood frozen.

Julian whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Vivian shook her head.

“No.”

Claire looked at them.

“What?”

Vivian's voice trembled.

“It's not impossible.”

She pointed toward Claire's necklace.

“The ledger isn't a book.”

Claire touched the silver chain around her neck.

The wedding ring.

Julian stared at it.

“Claire…”

She pulled the ring from the chain.

There was a tiny seam inside the gold.

She had never noticed it.

Vivian's eyes widened.

“Open it.”

Claire twisted the ring.

It clicked.

A microscopic compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny black memory chip.

Claire stared.

The second USB had been a decoy.

The real evidence had been with her all along.

For three years.

Hidden around her neck.

She removed the chip.

Julian looked at her.

“Do you know what that is?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Vivian whispered:

“The original ledger.”

Claire inserted the chip.

The screen loaded.

Thousands of names appeared.

Bank accounts.

Hotels.

Secret companies.

Political payments.

Disappearances.

Everything.

Then one final name appeared at the top.

OWNER: CLAIRE BENNETT.

Claire stared.

Her entire body went cold.

She looked at Julian.

“You knew.”

He shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Then another line appeared.

SUCCESSOR: LILY BENNETT.

Claire's eyes widened.

And beneath it—

a third line.

IF CLAIRE DIES BEFORE TRANSFER, CONTROL PASSES TO:

The screen flickered.

Everyone leaned closer.

The name appeared.

Claire stopped breathing.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Julian.

It wasn't Vivian.

It wasn't her mother.

The name belonged to someone Claire had never suspected.

Someone who had been beside her from the beginning.

The person listed as the final beneficiary was—

NOAH BENNETT.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her dead brother.

The brother she had been told never existed.

The brother who had supposedly died twenty years ago.

Julian whispered:

“Claire…”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel suddenly entered the room.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

Claire turned toward him.

“You knew.”

Daniel didn't answer.

“Daniel.”

He finally whispered:

“Noah isn't dead.”

The room went silent.

Claire's heart stopped.

Then someone behind them laughed.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“You finally remembered me.”

Claire turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Scarred.

His eyes were exactly like hers.

He smiled.

“Hello, Claire.”

She stared at him.

He looked at the screen.

Then back at her.

“My sister.”

Claire couldn't breathe.

May you like

Because the dead man standing before her—

was Noah.
