CHAPTER 4 — THE ROOM THAT DOESN'T EXIST

CHAPTER 4 — THE ROOM THAT DOESN'T EXIST

The emergency lights flickered back on.

Claire's first thought was Lily.

Her daughter was still beside her.

Her second thought was Vivian.

Gone.

The woman in the crimson dress had disappeared without a trace.

“Vivian!”

Claire ran into the hallway.

Julian grabbed her arm.

“Wait.”

“Let me go!”

“You don't know where she went.”

“She was right here!”

“I know.”

“Then find her!”

Julian looked down the corridor.

The hotel was strangely silent.

No guests.

No employees.

No security guards.

Just the faint hum of the emergency lights.

Claire pulled her arm free.

“This is your hotel.”

“No.”

“What?”

Julian's face was tense.

“It's not.”

Claire stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“My name isn't on the ownership documents.”

She froze.

“Then whose name is it?”

Julian looked toward Marcus.

Marcus answered quietly:

“Victor Hale.”

Claire felt a chill.

The same man who had appeared on the screen.

The same man who knew about Lily.

The same man who had told her she had killed her father.

Claire looked down the corridor.

“Where did Vivian go?”

Marcus pointed toward the elevators.

“She didn't use them.”

“How do you know?”

“Because the security system would have recorded it.”

Claire looked at the camera above them.

“Then where?”

Marcus hesitated.

“There is another possibility.”

“What?”

“The old service corridors.”

Claire frowned.

“Where do they lead?”

Marcus looked at Julian.

Julian's expression darkened.

“Everywhere.”

THE MAP

They entered a maintenance room.

Marcus locked the door behind them.

Claire placed Lily on a chair.

“Stay here.”

Lily looked frightened.

“Mommy?”

Claire knelt beside her.

“I'll be right back.”

“Don't leave me.”

Claire's heart broke.

“I won't.”

Julian stood nearby.

Lily looked at him.

“Daddy.”

He immediately knelt.

“I'm here.”

The little girl reached for his hand.

Claire watched them.

For a moment, she hated him.

For another moment, she saw how much he loved their daughter.

That made everything worse.

Marcus spread an old blueprint across the table.

“This is the original hotel.”

Claire looked at it.

Twenty floors.

Hundreds of rooms.

Ballrooms.

Restaurants.

Service areas.

Everything seemed normal.

Then Marcus placed another blueprint over it.

“This is the current structure.”

Claire frowned.

“Twenty-two floors.”

“Yes.”

“Why does the public plan show twenty?”

“Because floors twenty-one and twenty-two were removed from the records.”

Claire looked closer.

“There are rooms here.”

“Thirty-six.”

“Why aren't they listed?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because they don't legally exist.”

Claire's skin prickled.

“What are they used for?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Julian did.

“People disappear there.”

Claire stared.

“What people?”

“Witnesses.”

THE HIDDEN ELEVATOR

Marcus led them through the service corridor.

At the end was a wall.

Nothing unusual.

Claire looked at him.

“There's no door.”

Marcus smiled.

“There is.”

He pressed a small metal plate beside the wall.

Nothing happened.

He pressed again.

A click sounded.

Part of the wall moved inward.

A narrow elevator appeared.

Claire stared.

“This wasn't on the blueprint.”

“No.”

Julian stepped inside.

Claire stopped him.

“You're not going alone.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

Marcus entered.

Claire followed.

The doors closed.

There were no floor buttons.

Only one.

A red button marked:

21.

Claire pressed it.

The elevator began moving.

Up.

And up.

Past twenty.

The display went blank.

Then a number appeared.

21.

The doors opened.

Claire stepped out.

The hallway was dark.

No carpet.

No paintings.

No lights.

Just concrete walls and steel doors.

Each door had a number.

Claire looked around.

“This is a hotel?”

“No,” Marcus said.

“What is it?”

Julian answered:

“A prison.”

ROOM 2107

They walked down the corridor.

Claire saw scratches on the walls.

Some deep.

Some fresh.

She stopped.

“What happened here?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Julian did.

“People were kept here.”

“For how long?”

“Sometimes days.”

“Sometimes months.”

Claire's stomach turned.

“Why?”

“To make them disappear.”

Claire looked at him.

“Disappear how?”

Julian's eyes darkened.

“New identities.”

He pointed toward one of the doors.

“New documents.”

Another.

“New passports.”

Another.

“New bank accounts.”

Claire stared.

“And if they refused?”

Julian said nothing.

Marcus opened a door.

Inside was an empty room.

A chair.

A table.

A camera.

Nothing else.

Claire stepped backward.

“No.”

Marcus closed it.

“We should keep moving.”

They reached room 2107.

Marcus stopped.

“Someone was here.”

Claire looked at the lock.

“Who?”

“Vivian.”

Claire's heart jumped.

“How do you know?”

“Her security bracelet was detected.”

Julian tried the handle.

Locked.

Claire looked at Marcus.

“Open it.”

Marcus used a keycard.

The door opened.

The room was empty.

Claire rushed inside.

“Vivian!”

Nothing.

A crimson scarf lay on the floor.

Claire picked it up.

“She's been here.”

Julian looked around.

“Recently.”

Claire saw something scratched into the wall.

Three words.

DON'T TRUST JULIAN.

She turned.

Julian stared at it.

“I didn't write that.”

Claire looked at him.

“I know.”

He seemed surprised.

“You believe me?”

“No.”

Claire walked past him.

“I just don't know who wrote it.”

THE ROOM BEHIND THE ROOM

Marcus noticed something.

He ran his fingers along the wall.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“There are two layers.”

Claire looked closer.

The wall behind the bed was slightly different.

Marcus pushed against it.

Nothing.

He pushed again.

A panel moved.

A narrow opening appeared.

Behind it was another room.

Claire's heart raced.

“What is this?”

Marcus stepped inside.

The room contained filing cabinets.

Hundreds of them.

Each drawer had a name.

Claire looked at the first one.

JULIAN CROSS.

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Passports.

Birth certificates.

Bank records.

Medical records.

Everything.

She opened another.

VIVIAN VALE.

Claire froze.

“Vale?”

Marcus nodded.

“Her father's family.”

Claire pulled out the file.

Inside were documents showing Vivian's real inheritance.

Claire read them.

Then stopped.

“This says she owns fifty-one percent.”

Julian looked over.

“That can't be right.”

“It is.”

Claire turned.

“Vivian isn't just an heiress.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“She is the majority owner.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Julian need her father's shares?”

“He didn't.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Marcus's voice lowered.

“Julian needed Vivian.”

THE REAL REASON

Claire found another file.

VIVIAN VALE — PROJECT ORPHEUS

She opened it.

The first page contained one sentence.

SUBJECT MUST REMAIN EMOTIONALLY DEPENDENT ON JULIAN CROSS.

Claire's stomach turned.

“What is this?”

Julian went pale.

“Give me that.”

Claire pulled it away.

“No.”

She read further.

OBJECTIVE: MARRIAGE.

OBJECTIVE: TRANSFER OF CONTROL.

OBJECTIVE: ACCESS TO FAMILY TRUST.

Claire looked at Julian.

“You were ordered to marry her.”

Julian didn't answer.

“You weren't going to marry her because you loved her.”

“No.”

“You were going to marry her for her trust.”

“Yes.”

Vivian's file continued.

IF SUBJECT RESISTS, USE CLAIRE BENNETT.

Claire stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Julian stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

“Tell me.”

He looked away.

“They knew you were alive.”

Claire's heart sank.

“They used me to control Vivian.”

“Yes.”

“They threatened her with me.”

“Yes.”

Claire closed the file.

“And you went along with it.”

Julian's voice broke.

“I had no choice.”

Claire slapped the file onto the table.

“You always have a choice.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“And Vivian?”

He had no answer.

THE RECORDING

A small red light blinked on the desk.

Claire noticed it.

“What is that?”

Marcus approached.

“A recorder.”

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Vivian's voice.

“If anyone finds this, Julian lied.”

Claire froze.

The recording continued.

“I found out what this place is.”

A pause.

“I found the files.”

Another pause.

“I know about Claire.”

Claire's eyes widened.

Vivian's voice trembled.

“I know she's alive.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“I know Lily exists.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“And I know Julian isn't the man running this.”

The recording stopped.

Marcus looked at Claire.

The device beeped.

Another file opened automatically.

Vivian's voice returned.

“If you're hearing this, I've probably been taken.”

Claire looked around.

“Taken where?”

Vivian continued:

“Room 2201.”

Marcus's face changed.

“That room doesn't exist.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Marcus pointed upward.

“There's no floor twenty-two on this elevator.”

Claire looked at the blueprint.

“Then how do we get there?”

Marcus whispered:

“There is another elevator.”

FLOOR TWENTY-TWO

They found the second elevator behind the filing cabinets.

It had no controls.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Marcus placed his hand against it.

The scanner rejected him.

Julian tried.

Rejected.

Claire stepped forward.

The scanner turned green.

Everyone froze.

The doors opened.

Claire stared at her hand.

“Why did it recognize me?”

Julian whispered:

“Because this place was built for you.”

Claire stepped inside.

The doors closed.

The elevator moved upward.

Twenty-one.

Twenty-two.

The doors opened.

The corridor was completely different.

Luxury.

Black marble.

Gold walls.

Crystal lights.

It looked like the penthouse of a billionaire.

Claire stepped out.

At the end of the hallway was one door.

2201.

The door was open.

Claire entered.

“Vivian?”

No answer.

A table stood in the center.

On it was a single glass of water.

Still warm.

Someone had been there.

Recently.

Claire walked farther inside.

A wall-mounted screen turned on.

Victor Hale appeared.

Claire stopped.

“Where is Vivian?”

Victor smiled.

“Closer than you think.”

Claire looked around.

“What do you want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because you're the only person who can unlock the final account.”

Claire frowned.

“What account?”

Victor smiled.

“The account your father created.”

“What is in it?”

“Everything.”

“Money?”

“No.”

Victor leaned closer.

“Names.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“What names?”

“Everyone who participated.”

“Why do you need me?”

“Because your father made the account biometric.”

Claire didn't understand.

Victor continued.

“Your fingerprints.”

Claire stared.

“And your memories.”

She froze.

“What?”

“Your father knew they would erase your memory.”

Victor smiled.

“So he left you a backup.”

Claire's heart raced.

“Where?”

Victor's expression became almost amused.

“Inside your wedding ring.”

Claire touched the silver chain around her neck.

The gold ring.

Her wedding ring.

Julian stepped forward.

“No.”

Victor laughed.

“You finally understand.”

Claire looked at Julian.

“What is inside my ring?”

Julian's face had gone white.

“A key.”

“To what?”

“The account.”

Victor smiled.

“And the account contains the truth about the night your father died.”

Claire's fingers closed around the ring.

“Then I'll open it.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because once you do…”

His voice became cold.

“…everyone who wants you dead will know exactly where you are.”

The screen went black.

At that exact moment, the door behind them slammed shut.

Locks engaged.

Claire turned.

Julian rushed to it.

“It's locked.”

Marcus tried the controls.

Nothing.

Then a speaker crackled overhead.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Claire recognized it immediately.

Vivian.

“Claire…”

Claire stepped toward the speaker.

“Vivian?”

Her voice was trembling.

“Don't trust anyone in that room.”

Claire looked at Julian.

Vivian continued.

“Not Julian.”

Claire's heart tightened.

“Not Marcus.”

Marcus froze.

“And especially…”

A pause.

Claire waited.

Vivian whispered:

“Not me.”

The lights went out.

Then the screen came back on.

A live video appeared.

Vivian was sitting in a chair.

Her hands were tied.

A man stood behind her.

Claire couldn't see his face.

But she could hear his voice.

“Claire.”

She froze.

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

The man stepped into the light.

Claire's breath caught.

It was her father.

Alive.

He looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And smiled.

“Did you really think I was dead?”
