CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST BETRAYAL
The photograph of Lily remained on the screen.
Claire stared at her daughter's face.
Lily looked frightened.
But she wasn't crying.
That frightened Claire even more.
Because Lily had always cried when she was afraid.
This time, she was simply staring at the camera.
As if someone had told her not to cry.
Claire looked at Julian.
“Where are they?”
“I don't know.”
“You've been lying to me for three years.”
“I know.”
“You've been hiding things from me.”
“I know.”
“You expect me to believe you now?”
Julian looked at her.
“No.”
Claire's expression hardened.
“Good.”
She turned toward the door.
Julian followed.
“I’m coming with you.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“You're exactly what they expect me to bring.”
Julian stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“It means if they want me alone…”
She looked at him.
“…there's a reason.”
Julian's face tightened.
“You're walking into a trap.”
“I know.”
“And you're still going.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Claire picked up the original ledger.
“Because this time, I'm the one setting the trap.”
THE EMPTY HOTEL
Claire arrived at the abandoned Bennett Grand alone.
The building had been closed for years.
Windows were broken.
The marble floor was covered in dust.
But the lights were on.
Someone had prepared the place.
Claire walked inside.
Her footsteps echoed.
“Lily?”
Nothing.
She walked deeper.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
“You came.”
Claire stopped.
Richard.
“Where is my daughter?”
A laugh.
“Always straight to the point.”
“Show me Lily.”
The lights came on.
A large screen appeared.
Lily was sitting in a chair.
Her hands weren't tied.
Richard stood behind her.
Daniel stood beside him.
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Let her go.”
Richard smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
“This isn't about money.”
Claire stared at him.
“Everything you've done is about money.”
“No.”
Richard stepped closer to the camera.
“Money is just the scoreboard.”
Claire frowned.
“Then what is the game?”
Richard smiled.
“Control.”
THE MAN BEHIND JULIAN
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Julian.
Claire stared.
Richard spoke.
“You've spent three years wondering who Julian worked for.”
Claire's heart tightened.
“He worked for your father.”
“No.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Adrian?”
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“Julian worked for me.”
Claire froze.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Richard opened another file.
Contracts appeared.
Payments.
Travel records.
Private meetings.
Julian's name appeared again and again.
Claire felt the floor move beneath her.
“No.”
Richard continued.
“He was recruited seven years ago.”
“Before I met him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To watch you.”
Claire's breath stopped.
Richard smiled.
“Your father couldn't trust his own daughter.”
“So he hired Julian.”
“No.”
Claire stared.
“Who hired him?”
Richard's answer was quiet.
“Your mother.”
Claire froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“She hired Julian to spy on me?”
“Not exactly.”
Richard laughed.
“She hired him to protect you.”
Claire's face hardened.
“Then why did you have his records?”
“Because I took control of the operation.”
“When?”
“After your father died.”
Claire stared.
“You replaced him.”
“Yes.”
“And Julian stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard smiled.
“Because he fell in love with you.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“That doesn't make it better.”
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“It makes it worse.”
JULIAN'S FIRST MISSION
A video began playing.
Seven years earlier.
Julian was younger.
He sat across from Claire's mother.
She placed a file on the table.
Inside were photographs of Claire.
Claire at university.
Claire leaving a restaurant.
Claire laughing with friends.
Claire sleeping.
Claire didn't know she was being watched.
Julian looked uncomfortable.
“I don't like this.”
Her mother said:
“You don't have to like it.”
“What do you want?”
“I want you to keep my daughter alive.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
Julian looked at the photographs.
“Why me?”
“Because she will trust you.”
“And if she doesn't?”
“She will.”
“How do you know?”
Claire's mother smiled sadly.
“Because she has always been drawn to people who look like they need saving.”
Julian stared at her.
“That's cruel.”
“No.”
She pushed another photograph toward him.
“That's my daughter.”
The video ended.
Claire covered her mouth.
“He was assigned to me.”
Richard's voice came through the speakers.
“Yes.”
“He was supposed to watch me.”
“Yes.”
“And then…”
“You fell in love.”
Claire closed her eyes.
That part she already knew.
But knowing the beginning made the ending hurt more.
THE SECOND MISSION
Another video appeared.
Three years earlier.
Julian sat with Richard.
Richard pushed a folder toward him.
“You need to make Claire disappear.”
Julian stared.
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“It's already happening.”
“She's not dying.”
“Not physically.”
Julian's expression hardened.
“You're asking me to destroy her life.”
“I'm asking you to save it.”
“From what?”
Richard leaned forward.
“Her own family.”
Julian looked at the file.
“What happens if I refuse?”
Richard smiled.
“Lily dies.”
Julian froze.
Richard continued:
“Your choice.”
The video ended.
Claire's hands trembled.
She looked at the screen.
“Lily was already targeted.”
“Yes.”
“Julian knew.”
“Yes.”
“He chose me.”
“Yes.”
“And he didn't tell me.”
“No.”
Claire whispered:
“Because he thought I would sacrifice myself.”
Richard smiled.
“He knew you would.”
THE MESSAGE
Claire's phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
TURN AROUND.
She did.
Nobody.
Another message.
LOOK UP.
Claire looked at the ceiling.
A camera.
Then another message.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
The lights went out.
Claire reached for her phone.
A man's voice spoke behind her.
“You never were.”
Claire turned.
Julian stood in the darkness.
She stepped back.
“How did you get here?”
“I followed you.”
“I told you not to.”
“I know.”
“You disobeyed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard expected you to come alone.”
Claire stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you stop me?”
Julian's voice was quiet.
“Because you needed to see this.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
“The truth.”
THE LAST BETRAYAL
Julian walked toward the center of the room.
He placed his phone on a table.
A recording began.
Richard's voice.
But there was another voice.
A woman.
Claire froze.
Her mother's voice.
“You need to make sure Claire never discovers the original ledger.”
Claire's heart stopped.
Richard answered:
“She will.”
“Then destroy it.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian already has it.”
Silence.
Then her mother said:
“Then kill Julian.”
Claire stared.
The recording continued.
Richard laughed.
“You want me to kill the man protecting your daughter?”
“He isn't protecting her anymore.”
“Why?”
“Because he loves her.”
Richard's voice became cold.
“That's exactly why he has to die.”
Claire looked at Julian.
He was staring at the floor.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother ordered your death.”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Julian looked up.
“Because I promised you.”
“What promise?”
“To keep you alive.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Even from my own mother?”
“Especially from her.”
THE NIGHT JULIAN DISAPPEARED
Claire remembered.
Three years ago.
Julian had left their apartment.
He had told her he needed to make a phone call.
He didn't return for six hours.
Claire had thought he was cheating.
She had confronted him.
He had refused to explain.
Now she understood.
He had been meeting Richard.
He had been negotiating for Lily's life.
He had been trying to stop her mother's order.
And he had failed.
But there was more.
Claire looked at him.
“Then why did you pretend to be dead?”
Julian hesitated.
Richard's voice came through the speakers.
“Because if Julian stayed alive, they would use him to find Claire.”
Claire froze.
Julian nodded.
“So you disappeared too.”
“Yes.”
“You let everyone think you died.”
“Yes.”
“And then you came back.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you came back first.”
Claire stared.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
THE FINAL RECORDING
Richard appeared on the screen.
His face was no longer smiling.
“You want the last betrayal?”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
Richard leaned toward the camera.
“Ask Julian who ordered him to marry you.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
She turned.
“Who?”
Julian didn't answer.
“Julian.”
He looked at her.
“Your father.”
Claire's heart sank.
“I know that.”
“No.”
Julian shook his head.
“You don't.”
“What?”
“Your father didn't choose me.”
Claire stared.
“Then who did?”
Julian's voice cracked.
“You did.”
Silence.
Claire laughed nervously.
“No.”
“You did.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
“That makes no sense.”
“You found me.”
Claire froze.
“You found me?”
Julian nodded.
“You approached me.”
“Why?”
“You said you needed someone you could trust.”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't remember.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because you erased it.”
THE MEMORY
A flash.
A rainy night.
Claire stood outside a restaurant.
Julian walked toward her.
She stopped him.
“Julian Cross?”
“Yes.”
“You don't know me.”
“No.”
“But I know you.”
“How?”
“I've been watching you.”
Julian looked uncomfortable.
“Why?”
“Because I need someone.”
“Someone for what?”
“To protect my daughter.”
Julian stared.
“From who?”
Claire looked behind her.
“My father.”
Julian's expression changed.
“You're serious.”
“Yes.”
“You're asking me to spy on your own family.”
“Yes.”
“Why me?”
Claire smiled.
“Because everyone thinks you're dangerous.”
“And you don't?”
“I think you're lonely.”
Julian stared at her.
Claire handed him an envelope.
Inside was money.
And one photograph.
Lily.
“Keep her alive.”
Julian looked at the photograph.
“And you?”
Claire answered:
“I'll take care of myself.”
The memory disappeared.
Claire gasped.
She grabbed the table.
“I hired you.”
“Yes.”
“I asked you to protect Lily.”
“Yes.”
“I asked you to watch my family.”
“Yes.”
“I trusted you before I loved you.”
“Yes.”
Claire stared at him.
“And then I forgot.”
Julian nodded.
“You forgot everything.”
WHY SHE FORGOT
Noah entered the room.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew.”
Noah nodded.
“Yes.”
“You knew I hired Julian.”
“Yes.”
“You knew everything.”
“No.”
Claire frowned.
“What didn't you know?”
“The final part.”
“What final part?”
Noah looked at Julian.
Julian closed his eyes.
Noah continued:
“Claire didn't erase her memories because she was afraid of being captured.”
Claire stared.
“Then why?”
Noah's voice became quiet.
“Because she discovered she was pregnant.”
Claire froze.
Julian's eyes closed.
Claire whispered:
“Lily…”
“Yes.”
“You're saying I erased my memories to protect Lily.”
“Yes.”
“From what?”
Noah looked at Richard's image.
“From the person who wanted to use her as the final key to the trust.”
Claire looked at Julian.
“And that person…”
Julian nodded.
“Wasn't your father.”
Claire's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Julian looked at Richard.
Richard smiled.
Then another face appeared on the screen.
Adrian.
Claire froze.
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
His voice was calm.
“Hello, Claire.”
Claire couldn't breathe.
Adrian continued:
“You've spent your entire life believing I wanted the empire.”
“I never did.”
“I wanted something much more valuable.”
Claire whispered:
“What?”
Adrian smiled.
“Your daughter.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT LILY
The screen changed.
A medical file appeared.
LILY BENNETT — GENETIC PROFILE.
Claire stared.
“What is that?”
Julian went pale.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
He didn't answer.
She opened the file.
Her eyes scanned the results.
Then stopped.
Her hands began shaking.
“No.”
Noah stepped closer.
“What?”
Claire couldn't speak.
She looked at Julian.
“You knew.”
Julian whispered:
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
“I swear I didn't.”
“You knew Lily wasn't…”
Her voice broke.
Julian stepped forward.
“Claire…”
She backed away.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew she wasn't…”
Claire couldn't finish.
Then Richard's voice came through the speakers.
“She isn't Julian's daughter.”
Silence.
Claire's entire world collapsed.
Julian looked devastated.
Richard smiled.
“She is yours.”
Claire stared at him.
Richard continued:
“And that…”
He paused.
“…is why everyone has been hunting her.”
The screen went black.
Claire stood motionless.
Julian reached for her.
She pulled away.
For the first time since she had found him alive—
she didn't know whether she wanted him beside her.
Because the last betrayal wasn't that Julian had lied.
It wasn't that he had watched her.
It wasn't even that he had hidden the truth.
The last betrayal was that somewhere inside the maze of lies—
there was one truth Julian had never been allowed to know.
And now Claire had to find out who Lily's father really was.
Because if Richard was telling the truth…
then the man Claire had loved for seven years—
had never been Lily's father at all.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness,
someone was waiting for Claire to discover the answer.
